Not really. If it was the IRA, it would be full of rusty nails or broken glass to infect or aggravate the wounds. Ball bearings making it sound more like a Middle Eastern style bomb... bearings give better spread (because you can pack more of them into the bomb) and thus inflict more casualties. They sometimes even coat the bearings in an anti-coagulating agent to prevent the wounds from closing up so quickly. This is as horrible as it sounds.

Regardless, this was done by someone who knew what they were doing.

A friend of mine just sent me this. I think it's a video from one of the camera guys covering the race itself when the explosions went off. It's shocking, of course, but nothing graphic is seen from what I can tell.[DOUBLEPOST=1366071881][/DOUBLEPOST]And here's something to balance out the bad.

Regardless, this was done by someone who knew what they were doing.

Though I have to believe that we're still talking about someone who's relatively inexperienced, or the other devices that were destroyed by EOD teams would've detonated as planned.

So far, no claims of responsibility. For all we know, it's a reenactment of the Boston Tea Party to get back at the tax-collecting gubbermint.
Or it could be someone trying to bring attention to the plight of Gitmo/Iran/Afghanistan/War of the Week.
Or it could be revenge for someone getting disqualified/scratched from the Marathon, or who was injured last year and holds the organizers responsible.
Where's Castle? I'm sure he could come up with a few more.

Dr. Ron Walls, chair of emergency medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, said doctors did not identify any shrapnel, such as ball bearings, but saw a lot of "street stuff" that had injured their patients.

That I hadn't heard about, but I did hear on Friday or Saturday about a guy who posted to 4chan that he was going on a practice run for a shooting spree and then went and shot up his community college's satellite campus at a strip mall, wounding two women.
