[News] The Trayvon Martin Discussion Thread

Guys, GB is just pissed that he has to deal with political advertising at his radio station and NPR doesn't.

Understandable.
Oi, don't even get me STARTED about political advertising.

But as I said, don't pretend NPR is commercial free. They pimp the corporations and "foundations" which fund their programming non stop, and it seems like every other week is pledge week. Also, don't pretend they're impartial just because they have a soft, leftist slant that makes you feel comfortable about leftism.

And my point was removing government funding is not banning, no matter how much you'll miss your Scottish Music Hour that nobody but you listens to.

I don't see the logic behind that, but I'll be the first to admit I'm not a law expert.
I think the main difference is the requirements. They are probably afraid a SYG defense might be out of reach with the evidence they have, where as a self-defense defense is actually pretty easy to pull off when you don't have that pesky victim to contradict your story.

Just wanna roll in here and say that the prosecution has basically made the defense's case and this show trial is pathetic.

Not sure I understand this, Adam. I thought that the defense attorney was fucking up bad. Of course, the prosecution's "star witness" couldn't read the statement "she" wrote...

Apparently MSNBC is saying there is now "little hope" for a conviction. Way to maintain objectivity, guys.

If you get beat by a lawyer who starts the trial with a knock knock joke, you should just give up your lawyer stripes.

So the judge is allowing the prosecution to enter testimony that Treyvon "had been using marijuana" and that caused his mental state to be such that he wasn't in his right mind. To this I say, "WHAT?!?" If anything, the pot in his system makes a better case for the DEFENSE that he wasn't the aggressor! Yeah, pot was the problem, not some wannabe neighborhood watch guy with a grudge and an unlicensed firearm that disobeys the order to stand down and not follow/provoke. It HAS to be the evil, evil marijuana! For fuck's sake! Are we through demonizing a substance that is safer and less addicting than smoking or alcohol? Were Treyvon drunk I'd be all for this, but pot?!?

Everything I'm hearing about this trial further convinces me Zimmerman acted in self defense. The only witness without an axe to grind (John Good) testified Martin was on top of Zimmerman beating the shit out of him. Case closed. We'll see if the politics behind the trial will actually allow the "not guilty" verdict so obviously dictated.

Isn't Zimmerman the defendant?

What, people don't do stupid shit and make bad judgement calls when high? Is that not relevant?

On pot, people usually just giggle and eat a lot, not get aggressive. And yeah, I got the defense/prosecution backwards.

I will say that most stoned people I've met have seemed less inclined toward violence... or really movement of any kind.

But maybe George "harshed his buzz."

Uh, maybe I'm incorrect in this, but I thought MJ stayed in your system for 30 days. It's not that he was high at the time of the attack; that's probably not the purpose of calling attention to it. It's more as a character assassination, moving away from the popular notion that Trayvon was this sweet innocent 15 year old kid.

Which depends entirely on if the jury cares if he smoked weed... which, statistically, it probably won't.

From what we've seen of Zimmerman's injuries "beating the shit out of him" is playing pretty fast and loose with the truth. Practically lying.

I ever get punched 25+ times in the face and have my head bashed onto a concrete sidewalk repeatedly, I should be so lucky to only have a couple of scratches on the tip of my nose and the back of head and no defensive wounds to show for it.

I think the fact that his ThC levels coming into play are ridiculous, especially since the doctor had originally said that it was too low to influence Trayvon.

I try to avoid situations where either I or another person can end up dead. I also don't pick fights with 17 year old kids cause I have a gun and they don't.
He was serving his community as a neighborhood watch. Then got attacked by a sweet little 8 year old boy, according to the media.[DOUBLEPOST=1373378611][/DOUBLEPOST]
Personally I don't believe that the evidence supports Treyvon Martin trying to kill Zimmerman so so yes I believe it does.
But that is not what is required to defend yourself.

You are all over the place with this aren't you?

But that is not what is required to defend yourself.
What is required to defend yourself? Shooting a kid who is trying to keep you from drawing your gun and actively screaming for help cause he's afraid he's about to be shot?

So it's okay to defend yourself, unless that person is just trying to defend himself? You realize you're saying it's okay for Martin to have attack Zimmerman because he was worried about being attacked, but it was wrong for Zimmerman to have attacked Martin while he was being physically assaulted?
