Halforum Minecraft Server

I'd people are serious about taking it over, I'll keep it up another month so they have a chance to get it going. A couple things to keep in mind.

Memory is pretty important. I would say we need at least 4 gig to keep the server running smooth. The farms aussie builds are nuts, and really tax the server. Not to mention people like pez that have tons of animals.

Second is backups, especially if you host it yourself. I learned the hard way. Make sure you are backing up to remote storage somewhere, and you either watch to make sure they're going through or have some kind of notification.
I didn't go completely crazy on the farms. Was thinking of a waterfall of iron coming down and then splitting into a double storage bin along the walls of the pit I built in spawn. Then the rail cars that delivered fish from the Guardian farm using the redstone and iron I collected mining out the ground, with maybe a drop off to chests at each base after a certain amount was gathered. Eh, it was bad enough building the rail from my base to spawn to start the iron farm in the first place.

Though if it does go for a patreon account I would be willing to chip in. Once I get a job and the stupid VA gets there act together...

Me neither!
I was "away" for almost 5 months, remember?

It's probably me you see. I've been working on a reproduction of Castle Figaro in the desert near @figmentPez .

I've also been working on something in the middle of the sea northwest of spawn, but that's currently nothing more than a giant hole in the ground.

I'd say 19 out of 20 times I log on, I'm the only person playing. As such, I'll be glad to kick in some money to keep the server running.

So Minecraft related, would anyone be interested in doing Minecraft mini games sometime? I mean things like build battle more than the fighting type ones, but I kind of prefer that kind of Minecraft play more lately than open world building.

You ever played classic mode Ace of Spades?

It seems like the groupings are random, at least on that server, but I'd be down for a build battle. Hit me up if you want to try it :)

Getting a Halforums Build Battle sounds like it could be fun. Dunno if we could scrounge up enough players, though. Heck, today was the first time I've played Minecraft in... well, I think I was still running 1.8.4 when I opened it up.

Anyone play around with the new Story Mode from Telltale yet? I'm hoping to have a little time today to check it out.
I'm waiting for all episodes to be out, and then a steam sale. I figure that'll be considerably cheaper than buying now. I really don't like not being able to finish a game. Even if the game has an ending that leaves questions, I'd rather that.

Also related: stop doing so many 2-part shows on TV. If you want that, then present it as a special two-hour event once in a while. And season finale part one of two is right out.

/rant off

No I haven't played it. I'm interested, but haven't played it.

I got it for my son, at some point I will play it with Steam Family Share, but right now I'm working on something else.

Did that patreon to help split the cost of server hosting ever come together?
I think it died with the idea that maybe the whole site should have it (which I think is right) and then maybe have tiers of content. That's how it works on there. So for example (100% made-up numbers, they are probably wildly off)

Level 1 - $50/m - the site exists
Level 2 - $60/m - the site has a vent server!
Level 3 - $70/m - the site has a minecraft server with 10 slots!
Level 4 - $75/m - 20 slots on the minecraft server
Level 5 - $100/m - hosted Space Engineers server for halforumites
...
Level 50 - $5000/m - Dave does free pr0n for site members...
etc

That isn't how much you contribute per month, but the amount the site gets as a whole. And while I can see the value of doing a "just minecraft" one, I think doing one for the whole site probably makes more sense, but Dave would probably have to comment.

Either way, I'm up for contributing.

I've been lazy/busy and haven't really explored the idea much since I brought it up. I don't really have a problem paying for the server, I just wasn't sure there was much interest in it. Since there seems to be, I'm OK with paying it.

I was thinking of putting together a PayPal account for it, and just have it up for donations if people really wanted to pitch in. I don't want people to think they need to though, I like having the server there for when I want to play.

I'd really like to look into setting it up so old world's are available as well, but again time hasn't been on my side.

If you want (or whomever), go ahead and set it up. It can be just for the Minecraft server. If we get too much per month we can figure out how much is left and maybe get another game server of some sort. I already pay for Halforums and the Vent server so we don't need those.

I finally got some good minecraft time in this weekend. I was finally able to clear out the ocean monument that I had been eyeing for a long time. It wasn't nearly as difficult as I thought it would be. I'm hoping to have some time this week to finish it up.
