So college football season is almost upon us. (In the US that is. You know - REAL football!)

Anyway, I have a college bowl pick-em pool that I'm starting. Not sure what the prize will be this time around. Mainly because it can't cost that much and because it's got to be non-geek related because this is also going out to my pay fantasy league and they wouldn't want the geek prize.

About the only other thing I could do would be to charge $5 per entry and the winner gets all the money. But I don't know who here would be interested.

So I'm making a poll. Tell me how interested you'd be.

Would you run into legal issues if you charge an entry fee?
This. Your basically running an interstate/intercontinental gambling ring if you try this. You'll also be alienating anyone not in the US, as American football isn't exactly popular outside of the US. I'd come up with something else.

College bowls are so incredibly weird and hard to pick. Each team can react a billion different ways to the 4-6 weeks not playing football. I wouldn't do it for money.

March Madness, on the other hand........

How the hell could no one win?

Anyway, it looks like there will be no entry fee.

http://www.fantasyleaguemanager.com/bowl/webermania/

This is the site and it's ready to go. Go, create a set of picks and go nuts. Please note that if you are entering more than once you need to say which one is the official one as I'm not allowing someone to go batshit. I have IP addresses so I'll know if you try and use multiple names.

Also note that some of my fantasy football league will probably be making multiple picks. They are not involved in any prizes won so don't sweat them, even if they win.

Ok, I entered, but I'm not sure I did it right. It would not allow me to change the points on the side. Is that set to the default of 1 point per? I thought the ranking of them would be the points, so I did that all wrong.

You pick the points on the RIGHT side just by clicking on the number you want associated with that game. If you change it all you do is click on the new value. Note that the number on the LEFT will stay at 1 and will not change. You'll see your number on the right side by the name of the team you chose.

HAHAHA! No he's not. And there's a magical thing called the internet. All scores, play by play info is posted in real time during games. Yeesh.

This. I pretty much suck at predicting bowl games or most college games for that matter.[/QUOTE]

I fucking love college football, but I equally hate the BCS system. I wish that colleges would pull their heads out of the alumni dinosaurs that want to uphold bowl traditions, and set up a playoffs system. College ball would be bigger than the NFL if we had playoffs.

God can you imagine December/January playoffs schedule? It'd be bigger than March Madness!

Besides, if I do a contest for writing people complain because they don't write. If I do a contest with art people complain that they can't draw.

I try and change it up each month to get as many people as possible involved but I'm always going to be leaving someone out. I know about American football so I chose that, plus because of my Fantasy Football league I got the software for free.

If someone wants me to run a contest for the World Cup I'm all for it but that might limit it also. I'm checking on World Cup software right now to see if that's something we may want to do.

I'm going to phone my local authority to issue arrest warrants for the thousands of people in workplaces across PA that set up private betting brackets for major sporting events!

You're going down, Dave!

Come & get me, copper!

(Cheeze-it! It's the cops!)

At least with these sports pick'em type things, people with literally no talent or knowledge whatsoever can randomly pick based on which mascot is the prettiest and still have a reasonable shot at winning.

Every year in the March Madness (which I also have software for so guess what March's contest will be) someone at my office just picks jersey colors and stupid shit like that. She almost always comes close to winning it or does win it outright. And I slave over my brackets and come in near the bottom.

I hate the BCS so much. The only team I give a shit about because of this system is the bowl Penn State's in. I think a lot of people are similar in this view. They watch the bowl their team is in and that's it.

Can you imagine a playoffs system in January? Holy shit, it would be insane. Basketball is nuts enough during March, and hell most American's don't even care that much about Basketball (not to the level of football anyway).

Insane is a good way. Right now they talked about if they took the top 8 schools and put them in a bracket, my Iowa Hawkeyes would be taking on the Alabama Tide in the first round. Ouch!

Can you imagine the upsets?!?!? I'd love it!

Even with a play off, there would not be too much of a bump in ratings. I'll likely only watch the National Championship Game, and "maybe" the bowl game A&M got into.

That attitude would not change much. People are mostly only interested in which play off games have local interest.

I'm entered.

Dave, don't worry about a pick'em contest. It's a good idea. So maybe not everyone is a college football fan. Fuck it, enter next month's contest then.

I like the idea of a March Madness and a World Cup contest, too. Maybe alternating between an art contest, a writing contest, a sports/pick'em contest, and an arcade-type contest would please everyone some of the time or something.

Hell, I'll help organize it if you need.

4 Games. You could even call them Bowl Games if you want. 4 games could be the Cotton Bowl, the Liberty Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl and the Alamo Bowl. Semifinals could be the GMAC Bowl & the Orange Bowl. The final game could still be the BCS Championship game. NOTHING CHANGES except 2 teams play 3 times. Each game gets bigger and better. Each game has a bigger audience, just like March Madness!!

Last year North Carolina beat Michigan State for the championship. This game drew 11.9% of the viewers in the country and 21.8 million households tuned in. You can't tell me that UNC/ Michigan State brings in those numbers. It's because it's the march Madness.

Same thing would happen with college football.

though i think you should put up a little info on teams and stuff, some of us dont know much about football so i'd end up just picking a team i know nothing about

The problem with sports contests is that they are pretty much set in stone for dates. So alternating is problematic.

I'm not worried about the contests, really. I make the rules and I've been paying for the prizes out of my own pocket. People can ask for a different type of contest but it's up to me. Now, if people gave money for prizes or if the money came from advertising/merchandise it would be a different story.

Which is also why I don't do cricket, NBA, MLH or MLB. I don't follow them so much.

But I like the World Cup idea, even though I'm going to have to look at the software.

When you get to the site you can click on the "Compare" button to see the records for the teams, but if you want more than that you can go here and click on Preview to get a more in-depth idea of the teams.

Chazwozel is going to win it and there's nothing anyone can do about it. A couple of us can come close but we can't win it.

Good job, Chaz!

Actually, the DaBares entry wins if Central Michigan and Alabama both win.
