Coronavirus Thread

And today, IT has been deemed "essential personnel" and so I have to be at work while everyone else is out. Which, honestly, I am ok with for now. It will allow me to get a lot of the bigger issues taken care of while all the teachers are out.
As long as you're working alone I would think you're ok. This mostly seems to be spreading by getting breathed on. They keep saying that there are no proven cases of surface transmissions.

Yeah, all the students are out, all the teachers are out. Admins are in though. For me, this is good because if I can get all of the little stuff that has been jumbling up my tickets for a while cleared, which I mostly have done today already, then the next couple of weeks will consist mostly of me sitting in my office, working the occasional issue while I watch youtube or whatever. Almost self-quarantining while at work.

I've been more productive today than I have been for weeks, simply because there are fewer people here calling me down to see about one thing or another.

maybe in the USA, but there have been several confirmed cases in Europe and China. Virus can survive up to 10 hours on surfaces.

My brother in law responded: "Yeah, still not real concerned."

HE HAS LEUKEMIA!! He's immunosuppressed! If ANYONE should be worried, it's this guy. Now, I'm not saying I want something to happen to him, but if anyone deserves it, it's this guy. Jeff, you're normally a really smart guy. WHY YOU BEING SO FUCKING DUMB?!?

It's the old folks here who don't seem concerned. My dad gave me shit about being as concerned as I was about it. God damn it old man I'm not the one who will die.

Here too. I had to give a training this morning at a customer site. Everyone in attendance was 55+. They came in making jokes about social distancing and making a show of sitting as far apart from each other as possible, and rolling their eyes and "whatever"ing. "It'll never get here."

Me: "Actually, over the weekend, (the nearest hospital) Baylor Scott and White confirmed 2 cases. It's here."

Them: "Well, we won't get it."

Me: "You will. I will. We all will. It's long past the point of not getting it. They just don't want everybody to get it all at once so that those who get sent to the hospital because of it don't overwhelm the health care system. Everybody will still get it, just not all at the same time, and for most people it won't be any more serious than regular flu. Those who will have it worst though are the immunocompromised and those over 60."

Them: (Looking at each other uneasily)

Me: "Anyway, hello all! My name is (GasBandit) and I'm a programmer with (my company), and I'm here to show you how to use your new conference room teleconferencing equipment..."

Can someone enlighten me on the wisdom of ordering in right now? I thought we were concerned about restaurant staff going in and carrying or being sick. They have to make the food. Someone has to package it, deliver it. Why is this considered still okay?

I genuinely want to know because I've been dying for the spicy Korean chicken place that opened recently and only got to order it once before all this started.
Personally I have stopped getting food that I can't (or don't enjoy) eat after nuking it in the microwave. Wash my hands after handling the container, just in case, and then reheat the food before eating. So that means I wont be getting hamburgers or subs for a while. But still might get chinese food, pizza or tacos as I like those just fine after reheating them. I just don't want to risk eating room temperature buns, or whatever, that's been breathed on all day.

Jun want into panic mode and wanted us to stock up on 4-6 weeks worth of food/supplies. Hit the grocery store and Asian market and somehow managed to fit everything in there---after she meticulously organized it

Looks like international travel bans and no one not a Canadian or PR of Canada is allowed in the country, except a few exemptions including US citizens. Feels like too little, hopefully not too late. The community spread now is my biggest concern personally. This does little to nothing to address that.
It's only a matter of time before we exclude the USA. Because like today we worked with our embassies and foreign allies before announcing. It's gonna more diplomacy before we cut them off entirely.

I guess not admitting you're in danger is a way of coping with being in danger.

It has updated:
  • Total cases: 3,487
  • Total deaths: 68
  • Jurisdictions reporting cases: 53 (49 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and US Virgin Islands)
Total confirmed cases has more than doubled over the weekend.
Yes they post numbers after the markets close.

I am trying to clean out the laundry room because it's the only room with a door that closes that isn't a bedroom or bathroom, so that my husband can use it as his work from home space without dealing with the rest of us being needy assholes. My laundry room is a horrific mess of a few clothes we actually want that got lost in the giant pile of clothes that have been outgrown but we just threw in there and never touched again. I made both of my kids help, and you can tell that they are already bored because my son did it with no complaints, and my daughter with minimal. We are still no where near done, BUT A PERSON CAN FIT IN THERE NOW. :p

No I totally understand not locking the states out immediately. 100% makes sense. I used to live in Windsor and am aware, at least partially, the ramifications some thing like that would entail.

I'm still referring to not mandating those that can work from home to do so.

After listening to the American update, it's pretty clear that the USA is looking to score points by closing the border first. So we may have to suck it up and let the wookie win.

And I don't think they can really mandate work from home without enforcement. And developing a work from enforcement vehicle seems like a waste of resources right now.

The Canadian Government actually has a website up with instructions not to snuggle or kiss your pets if you’re diagnosed. Very thorough.

I’m glad my work wants us to work from home. I’m immune compromised and need to be careful.

I just want you to know that posting a picture like that with a dog in it is entrapment for bad racist jokes about Chinese cuisine.

His doctors have explained his situation to him, right? Not necessarily in relation to this, but in general? I’ve been at my infusions before and because of the number and nature of my treatments have been told to go home and stop nowhere.

We had a sharp increase in cases in Taiwan over the last few days. Well, sharp by Taiwan standards. We went from around 50 cases to 67, though as far as I'm aware most of them were travelers from overseas. Nonetheless, my workplace had us test our work-from-home remote desktop setups last night. Mine works fine, I can angrily berate translators and clients from home if needs be.

And in other news, my parents managed to get themselves onto a plane and will be arriving back in Taiwan this evening. Good thing I already stocked their apartment last weekend, because we'd originally been expecting them to come back next week.
