[Rant] Minor Rant III: For a Few Hollers More

Similarly, I ended up not going back to the company I was working for before the pandemic started. They refused to give me the scheduled raise I was promised 3 months after being hired, and while I understand the shut down has been hard on companies, $16/hour literally isn't worth the 2 hour drive I was doing, and only doing on the assumption that it would go up after a couple months.

Followup to this:

After expressing my lack of willingness to work for them for 70% of X, they called me today.

Them: "Would you accept 80% of X?"
Me: "I'm afraid that still falls short of my expectations."
Them: "Would you accept a convoluted system of bonuses and add-ons that would bring it up to around 90% of X?"
Me: "I would consider it, but that's still not what I'm looking for."
Them: "What number would satisfy you?"
Me: "X."
Them: *scoffs* "All right, we'll get back to you."

I can't tell if they're trying to play hardball or if I really am being unreasonable by their standards. But even if I'm being unreasonable, even their best offer is only roughly equal to what I'm being paid at my current job, so I see no reason to change companies if that's the case.
Yet another followup, they called back again to say, "Fine, we'll give you X." And I said, "Cool, please send it to me in writing and I'll give it some consideration before I give you my final answer." But internally I'm thinking, "Huh, maybe I should've asked for more."

Of course, the step after this is to go to my current company and say, "Hey look at this shiny new job offer I got, look at how much they're gonna pay me. Do you guys feel like giving me a raise?"

So apparently a local mom has decided that on Sunday, there's going to be a parade for the graduating seniors. This was announced on a Facebook page I'm not on yesterday. My wife pointed out that it's kind of last minute to pull together an entire parade for 200+ seniors with all that's going on and having the announcement be on a private FB group, and the lady said she had been planning it for WEEKS. The best part? Because of covid-19, there won't be any announcements because they don't want people to gather and watch. So we're all supposed to drive our graduating senior around in a line through town with NO AUDIENCE, NO CONGREGATING, AND NO SOCIALIZING WITH THE FRIENDS YOU"RE LEAVING. I can't think of anything more depressing. Or people will find out, show up and get sick, which isn't really a win either.

I know this whole situation has been wearing me down, and I'm cranky right now about almost everything, but good lord people. They moved the actual graduation ceremony to later in the Summer. Just let it go.

Not a chance in hell she's doing this for any of the kids. Not even her own. Go do something actually fun with the family Sunday just to spite her.

So people can't even stand on their own properties and cheer the parade? That's so odd.

This sounds more like a funeral from your description.

So we did a translation for a client, in which the number "13th" appears quite a few times. The client changed them all to "13rd". Furthermore, they insist on using "13rd", and refuse to accept our explanation that this is incorrect.

My guess is that they did a find-and-replace to change "3th" to "3rd" and now they think there couldn't possibly be an issue with it.

Oh well, it's up to them if that's what they want to do, just don't come running back to us when people laugh at them.

Would your company look bad if the client insisted on keeping that translation the way it is?

Generally not, because usually people don't note which translation company did a translation. For major projects like a video game translation or a book, credit might be given to the translator(s) or translation company, but for smaller stuff usually people don't bother.

There have been occasions in the past where I've said to clients, "Do whatever you want, just don't put our company's name down as the one who did the translation." It's usually an empty statement, because they weren't planning on putting our company name down anywhere anyway. But when we're so eager to disassociate ourselves with the end product, they sometimes get the message that the errors they've made are really bad, and that can make them more amenable to our suggestions.

Yet another followup, they called back again to say, "Fine, we'll give you X." And I said, "Cool, please send it to me in writing and I'll give it some consideration before I give you my final answer." But internally I'm thinking, "Huh, maybe I should've asked for more."

So my current company offered me a nifty raise. That's not the rant.

The rant is that I emailed the other company to say, "Hey, look at this nifty raise my current company's giving me, do you think you guys could increase your offer?"

One of the higher-ups at the new company called me and said, in a bit of a snooty and unhappy voice, "You really shouldn't put so much stock in the salary, firstly I'm sure you wouldn't feel cheated if you come here, the salary packages at our company has always been very competitive in our industry, and what's more you should think about the long term, you should think about all the things you could learn here with us, and look at the team we're building here, I want you to think about all the intangible things you'd gain if you came here, I really don't like it when employees only think about money..."

And all the while I'm there on the phone, going, "Uh huh, yep, I hear you, that's fascinating, I see what you mean..." But I'm thinking, "Nothing you're saying right now is convincing me that I should give up 20% of my salary."

It's the Apple talk. Company owners that see themselves as visionaries in an industry will often engage in self aggrandizing speeches in an attempt to get you for they percieve you to be worth, as opposed to what you are actually worth, because they feel like they are doing you a favor just by offering the job. Don't buy this shit; Apple pays and they don't got Apply money.

Things like status and loyalty are things you should never consider in business anymore; always be mercenary. ALWAYS choose the money.

I will say there can be other intangible benefits - always look at the whole package. More days off, better insurance, paid meals, etc etc. Belgian wages are pretty low generally speaking due to taxes, but the same gross pay can still be incredibly different if your employer is also paying your car, fuel, meals, home internet connection, 5 extra days off per year, allows teleworking, has more discounts for employees for stuff you buy....
But yeah, working for less because of "the opportunity" is like working for "exposure".

You are highly unlikely to get ANY of that from a US employer. Hence why the advice is almost always to choose the money. It's really only different if you're taking a government job, in which case it becomes "Choose the best healthcare and retirement package" because it's generally the only way you're going to get a good version of ether of those things.

At my current job (which I've had for 9 years now), when I first came on board, my "second interview" was spending 4 hours in negotiations about my rate with the CEO and VP of IT. They kept trying to offer me stock options, or other "intangibles", and I kept saying no. Finally, I said "Look, you clearly want me. I want to work here. This is what it takes. And I promise you that in the first year, I'll save you more than I cost, so what have you go to lose?"

They paid me what I wanted. And over the last 9 years, I've saved them nearly 10 million dollars...so they've been very generous with raises at evaluation time.

Edit: I should note: It's much easier to negotiate from a position of strength (like Bhamv here has)--if you've already got a job you can live with that pays you a wage you can live with, it's a lot easier to play hardball when interviewing with the next guy. The most he can say is "no", and you stay where you're at.

Working for a MMORPM was loads of fun and I was happy to do so even though there were times where I was seeing at best just $20/mo. But I also had another "real" job that paid the bills at the time, otherwise things would've definitely been a lot less rosy.

As a bilingual, designated accountant, I could be earning a lot more in private practice (there aren’t many of us), but then I would have to work private practice hours. I like seeing my family and my health wouldn’t like the extra hours either....or the drastic decrease in benefits.

I took...too many melatonin last night in order to actually sleep and I feel amazing, if a little groggy today after being asleep for like 13 hours. I think I'm going to cook something nice today.

And that my friends, is white privilege.

I went to Home Depot today to grab a few vegetable plants, since the garden area is all outdoors, and an old lady parked next to me as I was about to leave. I say "parked", but she was so crooked that she literally blocked me in. I went over to her as she was getting out of the car to tell her that she parked crooked and I couldn't get out, and she apologized and sort of fixed her parking. At least it was fixed enough that I could get out, it was still awful. But she came over to apologize for blocking me in after she finished moving her car, and joked that she shouldn't be allowed to have a driver's license. My real rant here is that if you are self aware enough to know you shouldn't be driving, then don't fucking drive. Don't blame an inadequate DMV system. -_-

My wife’s grandpa was mostly blind, but still kept driving. His justification was he drove slow enough no one would get hurt...

My grandmother drove straight into a light fixture from a parked position and then was incredulous that the state decided she needed to take a road test. She passed though.

Me: I see you sent that unit back.

JrTech: Yes, we can't work on it, it's password protected so we have to send it back.

Me: The password is 91748. Remember for next time, if it's even slighty difficult, I probably made in depth notes on it in the library, including such things as passwords.

I got into a fight with my mom today. She lives down in Calgary with my aunt. Apparently my cousin and her husband (she's former RCMP and he's still a member) are both really disappointed in me because of the anti-police brutality anger I've been showing on social media (I'm down like 10 "FRIENDS" now, which is neat, fuck em). He's so disappointed that you think that away about them. Mother fuckers, I'm angry about the brutality and lack of consequences you fragile bitches. Every God damn cop needs their balls sucked as heroes at all times or they get offended and pouty. Dumbshits, you don't even break the top ten in most dangerous jobs. My youngest brother is a fucking roofer, a FAAAAAAAAAR more dangerous job than being a cop and they don't whine and bitch when they aren't hailed as heroes 24/7.

I swear to God, the Calgary racism is rubbing off on my mom. She tried to well actually ME about Floyd. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING.

I got very angry. She didn't used to be this way. That southern family she's near are all brain poison.

GAH. Suddenly, my white shirt is not quite the right shade of white for my finacee, so I can go try to find another for the wedding.
I have very difficult shape/size requirements so there aren't a ton of brands of shirts I'm happy with, and I pretty much have a choice between "stark white" and "champagne" which isn't quite white. Stark white is too white? I guess? So now I'm stuck with €300 worth of shirts I won't be wearing. Sigh. But champagne may look better next to her dress, but it will make me look less good - her dress is apparently something kinda silvery shiny which means white won't be good.
But a yellowish-beige shirt will just not look quite the same.
But....AH
"Oh, anythign off-white'll be fine" she says.
NO IT WONT.
And I don't have a ton of off-white choices
"oh, just get it made to measure"
Yeah, we're getting married in 8 weeks, most tailors have 6 or 8 weeks delivery time so that's KIND OF TIGHT ISNT IT.

I swear, if I didn't love her, I'd hate her.

We were all perfectly OK as far as preparations go, but with Corona we didn't know if we could get married so a lot was stopped for a long time. Now most things can go through, and suddenly it's "OH MY GOD WE'VE ONLY GOT TWO MONTHS" :)

And I know the shirt isn't a big deal but I was just frustrated and needed to get it off my chest :)

Why not skip white if it’s going to be hard to match and wear a black shirt, tie and jacket? That would look sharp and you could have a pocket square in a silver shade that matches her dress?

Considering my made-to-measure suit isn't black, that won't work :-P But yes, I might end up going for a different color entirely. Maybe I can get a shirt made in the fabric used for the lining of my costume, which wpuld be burgundy...But that might be too Joker-y :D

Sorry, I made the assumption that you’d be in a black suit.

Colour aside, it sounds like white may not work so I wanted to suggest an alternative that shouldn’t be too hard to find.

We were given simple clear instructions on how to update our user IDs at work today.

So naturally the technophobe is on hour 2 of complaining about it.
