Video Game News and Miscellany

Like, I'm not for Microsoft buying up so many studios (and publishers now) but I can't blame them. Sony was shopping for exclusives everywhere.

I don't think it's a bad move at all and if you're gonna get bought, I might be wrong, but I don't feel like Microsoft cannibalizes studios as badly as some of the others tend to. Only one I can really think of is Rare for a few years there but even they've bounced back a bit now.

Man, how shit does everybody else have to be that Microsoft is almost a white knight.
True story: there is a famous Viking from history known as “Olvir the Child-Sparer” or “Olvir the Children’s Man.” As his name implies, this viking was known for his kindness towards children.

How did he earn that name? He refused to play a game where you would take a baby from your enemy, toss it in the air, and try to catch it on your spear.

That’s it. He just refused to skewer babies for fun. Because that was so rare at the time, he became famous for his “kindness” towards children.

Just like with Microsoft, sometimes the bar is so low that just existing without trying to be cruel is enough to stand out in the crowd.

(EDIT: Full disclosure, historians acknowledge that much of the historical records about Vikings and their supposed cruelty is tainted by bias from their enemies. Did vikings really play this game with babies and spears? Probably not. But we have writings from the French and English that say they do.)

Honestly, this is something I've dreamed about for a while. (The awesome bathtub monitor setup, not shirtless Linus. C'mon, you know me better than that!)

So much better than the setup I currently have, which is my old monitor, set on a folding chair next to my bath, with a cheap Bluetooth speaker for audio. My setup works, though, and it really is nice to watch movies in the tub. Haven't done much gaming yet, but I probably will try some Fallout 3 soon.

Well that's great. After the clusterfuck the preorder for the PS5 was, Sony announced that you can only buy the console online. Retail stores won't have any hardware.

Shocked face.

AAA games as they currently exist just can't exist without crunch. So we either stop supporting them entirely or come to grips that there is no ethical consumption of them.

Imagine if we lived in a world where a game wasn't announced with a release date at all until it was actually finished. Everyone would die of shock.

Poland/EU's overtime laws are a shitload different than the shit US companies can get away with. The employees will be WELL compensated and by LAW can only be mandated to work only so much OT.

Yikes. Adam of Funhaus and Ryan from Achievmenthunter got a ton of nudes leaked. Both are leaving Rooster Teeth. There are allegations of cheating and grooming.
The only Rooster Teeth show I watch is RWBY, so I'm not familiar with these guys or what they did, but the situation seems to be blowing up to a surprising degree and scale. Lots of RT people have expressed their shock, disappointment, and disgust with them on social media like Twitter.

Also, is it just me or does it seem like Rooster Teeth exhibits a disproportionately large amount of drama for a media company?

Compared to whom? Linus Media Group? Yeah, if you don't count "Linus dropped the expensive thing again" as drama.

Compared to Channel Awesome, Fox News, <Insert AAA game publisher here>? Not really.

I honestly had to think for a while before coming up with groups that hadn't produced scandals. Normalboots? ProJared committed adultery and is accused of grooming, with alleged sexual contact with minors. ZDTV? Leo Laporte has a history of sexual harassment. Nerdist? Removed Chris Harwick from their About page after allegations of abusing his ex. The list of video game companies with harassment and assault allegations is too long to mention, and includes indie game developers as well as major studios.

Virtually all media companies involved with Youtube or other personality driven content have endured a scandal (usually involving sexual contact with fans, grooming, or some other shit like just plain old adultery) for all the same reasons these same scandals happen in cinema and music. It's almost like giving people a shitload of attention and no repercussions for their actions lets the worst in people come out, whether they want it to or not.

It's been 10 years since Fallout: New Vegas came out, and to mark the occasion, the modding team behind Fallout 4: New Vegas released this trailer showing off the work they're doing to remake F:NV in Creation Engine 2.0.

No release date for the mod, but the team is expected to make more reveals about the project this week.

Looks very good, but I remain cautiously skeptical about whether a full playable version will ever be released. As far as I know, the only such fan-made remakes that have ever been released were Black Mesa and Morroblivion. And Morroblivion, while playable, is still in its beta stage.

You forgot Chex Quest HD! But I agree with your point.

AM2R (Another Metroid 2 Remake) was released, and promptly sent a take-down notice. Goldeneye: Source got a cease & desist before a final version. I think Super Mario 64 PC did as well.

There are tons of other projects that produced pretty trailers (or not so pretty trailers), but faded away without any finished product.

A month or so ago I learned that Pirate Doom, a Monkey Island themed Doom mod exists, and is pretty damn good:

Then a YouTube channel I follow for Final Fantasy content did a play-through of the mod.... and didn't even realize it was Monkey Island. I was so disappointed, even though it was fun to see the whole mod played, and they did enjoy the mod anyway.
