Gas Bandit's Political Thread V: The Vampire Likes Bats

Sadly, Democrats are much less herd-minded in some ways and are much morep rone to fighting in divided order than Republicans. Trump (or deSantis) will get all votes from everything to the right of center. The "moderates" won't vote for X, the "progressives" aren't enthusiastic about Y, the liberals aren't in favor of Z, etc etc. It's not hard to see how this sort of thing can very much affect elections, when Stein, Nader, et al have shown that they do.
Bill Clinton once said, "Republicans fall in line. Democrats want to fall in love."

Democrats have always relied on a coalition. It used to be a combination of immigrant communities in major cities, white Southerners, and farmers out west who wanted free silver. Now it's a collection of college-educated urbanites, blacks, and young progressives. Democratic candidates have to maintain a delicate balancing act between the various factions. If they push for clean energy, they risk alienating working-class voters in the Rust Belt. If they misuse a pronoun, the kids on TikTok start looking for torches and pitchforks. The college-educated professional types are also more inclined to think critically and so they see their leaders' flaws. Each faction wants to like their candidate but they all have different standards.

The Republican party used to be a coalition of black Southerners, social liberals, and WASPs in the Northeast and Midwest. Now it's overwhelmingly conservative, white, rural/small town, evangelical Protestant, and old. It is mostly just one big bloc. This is a demographic that feels besieged. They can sense that the national culture has left them behind and that their way of life is dying. Their towns are hollowing out as the kids leave, their church congregations are emptying, and they feel that many of their core beliefs are being dismissed or disparaged. Their Fox News/Daily Wire/OAN echo chamber keeps broadcasting stories that keep them terrified and have them convinced "those people" are out to get them. They're also more inclined to see their elected leaders as crusaders fighting the righteous fight, which is why Republican voters ignore or justify their leaders' misbehaviors and outright crimes.

As a result, they share the same goal to bring their country back to a time when they were in charge. They don't care how much precedent they break or how badly their policies hurt the country's reputation or quality of life. They will burn it all down so long as they're left on top in the end.

We all have our differences of opinions about guns and what needs to be done about them.

But I don't think anybody here, least of all myself, would have ever seriously advocated universal open carry for minors as a solution to school shootings.

That would be diarrhea-brainedly stupid and grounds for being committed to an institution.

BUT HERE'S MTG

Well now, let's not be hasty. It's undocumented immigrants, so colored folks, does that even count? Really?
We all know these girls probably looked 18. Besides, if you're old enough to carry a baby, you're obviously old enough to hold a job.
Why, back in my day, we were happy to get out of school and be able to go to work and contribute! Youth these days just don't want to work anymore!

Am I doing this right?

You forgot the "taking jobs from God-fearing hard working 'Merricans!"

I’m not a big fan of MTG’s policy proposals in general, and this is no exception.

I can't decide if such diarrhea-brained people believe that America is still the old west and doesn't want or expect it to get better or actively wants to return to that era (cue responses about racist agendas). I suspect that they haven't even thought it through that hard and are jut saying whatever thought pops into their heads to justify MOAR GUNS PLZ.

Not even the cowboyest of old west cowboys would ever utter "Jest send all'th youngin's ta school with guns've their own! YEEE HAW"

At this point, I think it's the lightning rod act. Draw all the ire at one person with gobbledygook that will never fly so your compatriots can sneak by with odious-but-not-as-insane policy while everyone is distracted. Very Mitch McConnell-like.... and it also helps feed their savior/martyr complex.

Come to think of it, Old West towns banned open-carry of weapons as soon as the populace advanced enough. They were actually eager to develop to the point where they didn't need to carry in town.

The O.K. Corral shoot-out comes to mind. The Earps where trying to take away the Cowboy's guns, as per the local ordinance.

Couldn’t hurt. Unless the children start shooting at people.

I'm not sure how many are following the Alex Jones vs Sandy Hook parents trial, but today he chose to take the stand to defend himself against the allegations. He chose...poorly.

Today I am on site at a rural elementary school to tune and commission a new sound system for the gym.

Thought I should show you guys the sign they have out front.

So they're allowed to shoot helicopter parents, moms who disown their gay children, and dads who hit their kids? They can use force to make a bully stop harassing other students? Oh, no, not *that* kind of protection. Right.

Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines? He ruled for 40 years. That's 480 months. So each month he reigned he gathered 17.5 wives (he WAS King Solomon, you know) and .625 concubines - 5 every 8 months.

That man fucked.

No exaggerating, 17.5 wives/month would be 8400 wives :p

(and on a slightly serious note, it's a very modern fantasy, only starting somewhere in the 19th century, that a king or potentate with a large harem would service all of his wives and concubines. Most were there for other reasons, some outlined in the picture above. "Congrats, your brother died, here are his five wives to add to your own" luckily doesn't mean you have to enjoy bedding all your SILs. On a slightly less serious note, of course, you know that because you were there at the time :awesome:)

There's a Chinese phrase, 後宮三千佳麗, which literally means "three thousand beautiful women in the harem". It describes how a Chinese emperor (allegedly Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty) had three thousand women available to him in his harem, though strictly speaking it only says that there are three thousand beautiful women in there, it doesn't say how many of them are concubines or consorts, and how many of them are just servant girls or other staff. There are also alleged records of even larger harems, such as up to five or six thousand women, or even more. For example, Emperor Yang of the Sui Dynasty was rumored to have a harem that numbered in the tens of thousands. These figures are likely exaggerations though, since there's no real evidence any emperor really had a harem anywhere close to this size. The likely largest historically confirmed harem, for example, belonged to Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, who had 55 recorded wives and consorts, though it's rumored he may have had up to 200 in total due to many of them being "off the books". There's a theory that the stories of emperors having thousands of consorts were made up later on to portray certain unpopular emperors as engaging in excess debauchery.

Anyway, with these numbers being thrown around for Chinese emperor's harems, every time I hear about King Solomon's 700 wives and 300 concubines, I always think, "Those are rookie numbers."

Such precedent would mean that a Trump style president with Senate backing would remove all Justices and install a theocracy/tyranny, all while completely "within his rights".
NOT creating such a precedent will still mean a Trump style president will do it, but the justifications on the internet and Twitter will be slightly harder, and that's something you really can't risk, after all.

The Rs completely screwed nay semblance of honesty, integrity andprecedent when they refused Obama Garland for a year and then installed ACB in a week.
I don't disapprove of the SC as an institution, but the current SC has been politicized and abused. The balance of powers failed, and as a result the SC has been stuffed in an anti-democratic way with unfit candidates. All three Trump appointees deserve to be impeached, if only for not having been properly vetted, for being chosen for political purposes rather than own merits, and lying under oath. But it won't happen.

Let's assault the sanctity of marriage by accurately quoting from the bible:

Hey, the one about the rapist is totally wrong... it's the rapist that's forced to marry her, because she's now spoiled goods, and no one else ever will.

Also, it didn't turn out so hot for the Canaanites...

Yeah, it's a mystery why, now that women are earning degrees and making self-sufficient money, they're less inclined* to towards marriage...

(*Not feeling like they have to get married, or married by a certain age, etc.)

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 passed in the Senate today.

So, how long until the Supreme Court rules it unconstitutional and nullifies every part of the bill related to the environment?
