The issue for me was that it looked fine in some scenes, perfect even, but not in others, and it really took me out of it. IMO it would have been better is it was crappy all the time, at least it would have been consistent.

Sounds like a skill issue. That being said, i prefer them to have mixed checkout options, even without the effect on lines, sometimes i just don't feel like doing it myself (and others i don't feel like interacting with the cashier, even when ours don't do small talk).

They don't call it Rent-seeking for nothing. That being said, there is legitimate use for renting, like for out of town students / short term labourers etc. But that limits the amount of money you can make from it, and we all know that's a cardinal sin in "real" capitalism...
