not so serious but I want to rant II: Redemption

This has little to do with me in particular, but I still thought I'd rant a bit. My sister got an invitation to the christmas concert hosted by the King and Queen of Belgium at the royal palace. Instead of attending, she RSVP'd that she can't make it, and went to Cancun to get a tan. Okay...

China Beats Out Finland for Top Marks in Education

Never you mind about PR statements. Now less talk, more work We have some chinese guys to catch up to. On the more serious side again, what I meant was that, given the importance of good education for the future prospects of Finland in a changing world, I personally feel the education sector...

China Beats Out Finland for Top Marks in Education

Seriously speaking though, good on China :) Especially the conclusions drawn from the methods employed in education are interesting. I think I recognise many of them as parts of our system as well, though perhaps these findings will also go some way towards convincing us over here to start...

    Do you wrap your presents?

:wtf: Okay, I didn't know gift wrapping was that expensive in the States. I usually buy a roll or two of christmas paper, a ball of that christmas present ribbon and a bunch of those nice cards you write the receivers' names on. Costs like 10 euros max. If I had to fork over the kind of money...

    Do you wrap your presents?

Not addressed to me, but I still thought I'd offer my view. I value my time and money as much as the next person, but I think wrapping gifts is an incredibly efficient process. Taking the hour or so each year to wrap christmas presents provides one of the best bang for the buck ratios there...

    Do you wrap your presents?

I always wrap everything I send as gifts. To my way of thinking, wrapping presents is a relatively easy and low-cost way of adding a little personal touch to the affair, to demonstrate a certain effort put into the thing instead of the mere "hey, look at what I got for you from the mall".

North Korea bombs populated South Korean island

Interesting. Perhaps China is gauging to see what's on offer if they agree to jettison North Korea. I wonder if the chinese call for emergency talks is a bit of back-pedalling in response to the Wikileaked documents. Edit: Agreed. I think having this info go public is a loss of face to...

    Minor victory thread

Today was the first time I've used a urinal in a unisex restroom. Felt kinda strange having strange women pass by when the python was out and about.

North Korea bombs populated South Korean island

I'm pretty sure a nuclear option is not on the table at the moment. In addition to the reasons stated above and the bad press and strategic high risks involved in nuclear first-use in the region even in a theoretical case of no civilian damage, when you strip away all the posturing, this affair...

not so serious but I want to rant II: Redemption

Same here. The way I've handled it is to set up a Guest account on my laptop. If anyone else needs to use my comp for something, they can use that. edit: Damn, ninja'd.

North Korea bombs populated South Korean island

I'm actually not so sure about China necessarily doing anything significant on the issue. As was stated, border incidents in Korea have been rife over the years, the most widely-publicised being the sinking of that ROK warship this March. These things haven't caused China to apply any more...

    President Obama, grow a spine

Thank you for those links. Googling things, it seems your states sure are pretty big on balanced budgets.

    President Obama, grow a spine

To a guy with keynesian tendencies like me, that seems quite an odd thing to include into a consitution. Is it really so that the state is never allowed to run a surplus or deficit (barring exceptional emergencies, I guess)?

    A Zombie just bit you.

I'd spend the time getting some good headgear, as head wounds seem to be the leading cause of fatalities among zombies.

    Are you voting?

[FINNISH]: I'll also vote, the first time I've done so in a congregational election. I don't have a candidate picked out yet, though, so I guess I'd better get to picking one. Meanwhile, I'll be waiting for the mud-slinging to start for the finnish parliamentary election next April.

Don't look in the box... DON'T LOOK IN THE BOX!!!

Or, equally sad in a different way, he may go on to live a happy and problem-free life, all the while making a buck or two on the side.

Which would you choose (inspired by the time machine thread)

I'd take the first choice. Maybe I'd use the power, maybe I wouldn't, but it seems like the better decision in my view. I can't really see much advantage in the second option, which is more like an extremely accurate version of hindsight, and is about as useful. I have my share of 'what-ifs'...

They are obviously hoping this will cause people to put a lid on it.
