Nah, there was a still, just nobody doing anything in it. You have all the dwarves crosstrained in multiple things. For the sake of good production I've eliminated that, and put everyone on single tasks (with hauling being an exception for some). I'm wasting the initial expenses, but I have to be able to know my boys will do just what I ask when I ask them.
I did? Crap. Yeah - there's definitely an advantage to posting updates as you play the game, instead of dumping every screen into a folder and recalling later.

Yes, getting those dwarfs all working in decent harmony without too many 'No Job's poping up can be pretty chalanging. I esepecially love when I find something I need not being done and find the dwarf assigned to that a half mile away deep in the mountain hauling a recently unearthed gem back to the stockpiles x.x

Definately want to keep the exploratory mining confined to the immediate area towards the start till you got a half dozen peasents to kick around.

Just one thing more:

WHERE'S THE BINS?!

Good lordy! Get your carpenter pumping some out pronto!

The screens of this game are completely unintelligible, but the logs are so entertaining I'm becoming a fan of a game I could never play!

As stated before, need to know about 90% of everything you'd ever need to know about the game even to get started, part of this is making half a bloddy sense of the interface.

It's basically Dungeon Keeper, only every single bit of complexity put into the graphics was put into the game instead

The tutorials on youtube are actually helping me make sense of at least the basics right now and I'm only at number 6 problem is there are like 19 of them and they're ten minutes each.

What this lad said.
Today I found a friendly-graphics version of the game!

But my screen resolution is not compatible with this version (if I don't do some... magic stuff in one of the data files the guy that made it doesn't bother to explain "for dummies*") :_(

Here's the link for everybody that feels like Bubble or myself: http://mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl/df.htm

*A.K.A., Silver Jelly

Does that take a whole lot more computer power to run? If not, I might just check DF out with those graphics. Also, after having seen some of the youtube tutorials, I might just get into this game and be one of the successors in this bloodline game, if I can a) get the hang of the game afore you run out of people and b) you'll have me, of course.

really, what is this thing telling me to do?

"Note 3: DFG REQUIRES A SCREEN RESOLUTION OF 1280x1024 PIXELS! If you want to play on a smaller vertical resolution, you have to edit the data/init/init.txt accordingly. Subdivide the desired resolution by 16 to get the number of tiles (currently 64)."

I don't understand what the vertical resolution is, what does subdividing by 10 to get the number of tiles, wich currently are 64...

Could any of you download this just to check out the txt file and suggest me what to do to play with a 1024 x 768 screen resolution?

I'll be honest - I've trial-and-error'ed my way through most of what I've played (i.e. I've learned most everything by just experimentation, and a quick look at the wiki when I needed to know something that couldn't be easily ascertained). I should probably look into what these "bin" things are.

EDIT: Crap - looking back over my logs now. Some of the images I've put up are starting to break. Either my internet is taking its sweet time downloading a select few pictures, or the hosting site I used is taking offense at me removing their dumb little ad code from the bottom of each one.

Bins are how you effectively manage stockpiles. Instead of having one finished good taking a spot in a stockpile, or one bar, its one bin with 5-20 of the finished goods or bars in the bin. I think bins are used for cloth, leather, finished goods, bars, blocks, not sure what else.

Edit: looking at it from what I posted it really is hard to tell its the mayday interface, but it is. Actually its not my favorite, I think I might go back to the Dystopian Rhetoric interface. Not sure just yet.

You use this interface? All the slapping has turned back the graphics into ASCII again![/quote:ttp5no02]

If you go back to the first post of this thread, there's a link for this version that takes you right to downloading the file.

As far as the screen resolution goes, just run it as it comes by default, most likely it'll fit your screen just fine unless you're still running Windows 98, and if that's the case your computer sucks, get a new one :p

Yeah, I know what they're used for - I've just never bothered to learn to use them. Should probably go look that up on the wiki now...

That reminds me. You going to continue using my rock storage system?

the dump? Yeah when necessary. Usually the only times I dump stone early on is to clear space for stockpiles, and you took care of that already.

Its 1280x600 or somesuch. You could adjust your desktop screen res. Assuming you can run that res. Which if you can't......wtf kind of computer are you on?

Entry 4: It has been long since my last entry (it is now late summer), but there were many long term projects and other improvements that I have been waiting for their completion. We will go over them shortly. there are 2 other items I would like to discuss first though. First and foremost, we have immigrants! Within the seasons of spring and summer we have had 2 waves, giving us a total of 43 dwarves. This is a boon that has massively helped us increase our stockpiles. Here is the current state of our hoards

As you can see I am on my way to completing my goal of increasing the wealth tenfold, but not at the speed I had hoped for. Right now we have tripled it, and the year is almost half over. This will need more work. But now that the main construction modifications have been made this should be possible.

1.) The main halls have been completely renovated. The general design concept has been maintained, but there have been some modifications. This picture can show the majority of them.

In the upper left hand corner you can see where the grand dining hall has been placed. According to the dwarves that frequent it it has been called legendary. Just to the right of that is the old entrance. This has become, temporarily, a wood and bone stockpile. This may change, but will suffice for now. The old stockpile has been reworked, with much higher efficiency. The workshops surrounding it have been modified, removing all furnaces and smelters and replacing them with extra craft, carpentry, and mason shops. The old living quarters, outlined on the right hand side of the screen, have been renovated and made into a second storage and workshop area, focusing on metalworking and other crafts that did not fit into the old space. Finally on the left additional farming space has been added. This is also hopefully a temporary measure, as the distance from the stills to the farms are too far. However, on that latter note there is good news. We have beer, and we have a lot of it.

2.) The living quarters are finished.

Accomadating this many dwarves was difficult, but the migrants were well willing to sleep in the newly constructed barracks while waiting for their beds. Every non-military dwarf has a bed, and they will sleep well away from the construction. I may even one day give them back their coffers, but they must earn that right.

3.) A new, much more safe entrance has been devised.

Our chief engineer has devised a clever retractable bridge to the nearby hill, and our masons have constructed walls and flooring removing slopes to ensure that no beast may enter our fortress without crossing this bridge. If the enemy is too strong we can retract it using a lever in the nearby barracks. If anyone were to make it across this bridge, they would have to survive the gauntlet of passing through our military barracks before entering the fortress proper. In the future there will be fortifications cut into the sides of the mountains to allow for marksdwarfs to shoot out, but for now our military is composed entirely of brutal axedwarves and wrestlers, 8 in total I believe. A handful of these have even become elites. This should prevent the first goblin assaults from endangering us unnecessarily. I plan on installing traps as well, but I am concerned that a tired or drowsy dwarf returning from the long hunt will fall victim to this.

4.) Mining operations have begun in proper.

Previously the miners were digging in earnest pulling in massive quantities, but the variation of selection was not as it should have been. Iron or coal was needed immediately, and the supposed presence of Magma needed to be found. Therefore I used my traditional method and dug wide and deep.

Previous method

New method

These exploratory digs have done well so far, [strike:1qxdzq7b]finding more than one iron source[/strike:1qxdzq7b] finding copper, which is useful at least, as well as some other interesting things, such as platinum!

Now, with the business of reconstructing the foundation out of the way, leaps and bounds of progress should be made soon. Out of respect for our previous leader, Chronos, I have given him the venerable job of cutting gems and encrusting our masterpieces. He seemed a bit sad to not be working with the bones he so loved, but there would be a time for that later, and now we needed gems. Moreover, it seemed fitting that the founder of this dwarfhome should be given the second most noble job, that of the jeweler. The most noble job, the brewer, was of course taken by myself.

There is one last item to report, and this is a wonderous thing. We have an artifact.

This bucket marks our entrance into a new realm of craftsdwarfship. The dwarf who created this piece is now our sole carpenter, and every item he makes is a masterpiece. Many dwarves now sleep on beds fit for kings, and many of our stone doors are being removed to put in his oaken beauties. It bothers my beard to have too much wood in a fortress, as I said, we are not elves, but to see his works is to understand the beauty that can be found in wood.

I must rest once more, but soon there shall be more to tell. May your hoard grow as large as your beard.

C

Chronos[Ha-G]

Yeah - NORMALLY, I space out the digging more to get a wider swath of what's going on, and then switch to the dig every third tunnel approach for details. Don't know why I didn't this time though - perhaps I just wasn't paying full attention to the digging.

Oh, on a lighter note, MY BEAUTIFUL ROOMS! AUGH WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MY BRILLIANT DESIGN AAAAAAAAUUUUGH

Entry 5- Winter has come. It is with a heavy heart I must admit that my goals will not be completed. There is no way to increase the hoard to the level I had hoped, and because of this I attempted to cut my beard off. I was stopped seconds before hand when I heard a soft meow from the corner. We have cats. I'm not sure where they came from, but these cats may be a good sign. While they have as yet not attacked me or mine yet, there are ratmen who would seek to do us harm. While they live in the chasm they have access to the outside world, and it is only a matter of time before they decide to venture into my domain. At this point they would die a swift and horrible death at the hands of my brutal military forces.

5 champions and 2 elites. While originally trained in the arts of wrestling they have now started learning the ways of the axe, the true dwarven weapon. Their wrestling training will make them all the more deadly.

The wood shortage has become a serious issue now. I cannot spare the manpower necessary to cut down and haul all the trees necessary to fuel the fires of our smelters and ironworks. I have asked the next couple caravans to bring as much wood as possible. This should help, but it is only a stopgap. The leader to follow me will have to look to the next wave of immigrants for a solid backbone of haulers, something I have not been able to attain as yet. Perhaps I spread my men too thin, too many specialists, and not enough menials.

There is one piece of excellent news, however, another mighty artifact has been forged:

This was of course scooped up quickly by one of our soldiers. May the blood of many goblins stain its links.

Here is the state of the fortress at the beginning of winter.

I have started construction on my tomb. While I was unable to meet the goals I had hoped for, I still believe that myself and Chronos deserve tombs of our own for our sacrafice to this place.

Entry 6: This shall be my final entry. The days have grown shorter and my eyes are getting more and more tired. I sleep more than I should, but everything seems to be going as smoothly as it can, yet there is still nothing I can do to meet my mandate. I wake from angry dreams filled with red only to go back to sleep again. Last night I woke with blood on my lips. I'm sure it was mine. I'm sure...

My soldiers, no, my warriors have proven themselves true masters of the martial arts. As we have still seen no incursion of the goblin menace I felt it was time for my boys to get some real fighting, not just grab assing on the bunks. There have been numerous sightings of ratmen outside the fort, and I will not tolerate their filthy presence. I sent my troops out and slaughtered them to a rat.

My troops came back with grins slicked with black blood. None the worse for wear I soon had another assignment for them. It seems my bonecrafter had fallen into a fey mood, and had not found all the items necessary. While I tried to give him what he needed, I also understood that if it came down to it, I would rather him die at the hands of his brothers locked in battle than locked away in a dank cell. Therefore I stationed a squad of soldiers near him as he tried to finish his work. A part of me hoped he failed, so I could see my champions in action, carving the bones of my bonecrafter. He is partially responsible for the lacking growth of my hoard is he not?

Luckily for him, he was able to find the last items he needed. After trudging across the entire map for some ratmen bones he finished his artifact. Behold, my cage of bones.

In here one day mayhaps we will hold a captured dragon. For now it is simply a fascinating piece of morbid design.

In that same sense of morbidity, I have finished my tomb. Chronos was given one as well.

I believe the name of this colony is Patterned Books. From this I consider record keeping to be an integral part to the fortress, therefore I have engraved the walls of my tomb with the images of past events. Even Chronos's rise is given homage in my tomb.

I had also hoped to finish my room, but there was simply not enough time. Hopefully whoever follows me can grant me my hoped for resting place in life now that I have one in death.

Mining has been disappointing. Still I see nothing but Olivine and Gabbro. No Hematite, limanite, or other iron bearing fruit. I worry that there will never be a real steel industry in this fortress. However, there has been an ample amount of platinum and gems, and I hope that my metalcrafter will one day be skilled enough to work the platinum. As is I focus him on the nickel, which we seem to have in endless supply. We also have a decent supply of copper. While not as good as iron it can make for decent armor. If I could ever get my wood stockpiles high enough maybe I could armor my troops in copper, but for now they wear the leather I can make and the steel items I can trade for.

Here are the final tallies:

Although I have created a stable beer and farming industry, in all I have not achieved what I had hoped for by only increasing the wealth 5 fold, and this leaves me with a black coal of anger smoldering in the furnace of my soul. Sometimes, when I drink too much that anger gets out. Last month I smashed a stonecrafter's face into the wall upon discovering he was traveling to the bottoms of my mines to find stones to work with. This didn't seem to do much in the end, but it did put a smile on my face.

If only there were some goblins to release this rage on. To split the skull of a goblin with a mighty axe and see his blood splatter on the walls is all that I want anymore.

To the dwarf who will come where I have left I ask only this. A great deal of time and effort has been put into organizing the stockpiles, and while there is still work to be done, please do not ignore the order I brought to this chaos.

Transmission Ends zhhghattat *crackle*

Some notes for whoever's next. A lot of the dwarves have custom job names. Most of them are standard ones, like hunter or mason, but they've been custom added to help maintain easy management. 2 guys have been given the additional title of master. These are my legendary crafters. For the carpenter I set aside a workshop that only he can use, and he isn't allowed to use the other one, remember that. Other than that (cause those could really mess you up), have fun.

Edit: Also, I don't have the software to create a .rar. What are my other options?

Necronic

Staff member
Yeah, but I don't want to pay for winrar just for this one thing. Is there another way?

Edit: nm, trial version wootah!

That really depends - you can always dig upwards towards the mountain summit if you're in need for higher grounds for your defense.

Granite 1st 203

Dear Mother and Father,

I hope that this letter finds you well for I am pleased beyond belief upon the writing of it for I have been selected to lead the new settlement of PatternedBooks. I was granted this honor in a bizzarre yet very solum ceremony when I was the last to shout "Not It!" But as I take over I realize that there are many problems facing our outpost of Dwarven culture and pride. To be sure our last leaders were men of vision and skill but they have failed to make out home self sufficient and it is starting to show.

I would use our clothing industry as an example but nobody has yet managed to even plant a single Pigtail seed. This failure is shown best by what our citizens are wearing.

Last night I was nearly positive I saw our master carpenter split his breeches down the seem. I have planned out a proper operation that should get the industry started though it will need to be expanded to allow for a dyeing addition when the time is right.

As my next official act I decided to inspect the brave dwarves who lay their lives on the line to protect all of dwarf kind. I expected to be greeted by massive dwarves clad in the finest armor and wielding weapons that cause enemies to bleed profusely just form the sight of them.

I really should have known better by this point. These "champions" (I don't dare use the quotations around them because they are more than able to kill me) are armed with weapons that even humans would turn down and for armor they have leather. Can you believe it father? Leather! Like they are from some barbarian human tribe.

This, this... affront to my dwarven pride can't be allowed to continue. I will attempt to armor them properly but I fear these dwarves may be to set in their ways to listen to me.

Finnally with all honor strip away from me like an elves body hair I returned to my study to check our supplies. I don't know who the last record keeper was but somebody needs to tell him that a glance at the food supplies between drunken bouts of "pinch the wench" and then writing down a rough guess on the back of the napkin your friend used to wipe his nose (I hope it was the nose!!) is not proper record keeping. If I ever find the dwarf I swear I'll shave his beard.

I of course demanded that my current record keeper keep all counts perfectly accurate and will be installing some kind of "watering system" in that ridiculous office he had built.

With all my love,
Dubyamn

PS. Deduk and Sodel are doing great. Thank you again for letting me take them with me.

C

Chronos[Ha-G]

Yeah - if I had enough Dwarves during my tenure, I would assigned one specifically to bookkeeping, and cranked his accuracy up. Since I didn't have many, though, I couldn't afford to have one dwarf park himself in his office and remove himself from any other work.

Sooo...IT'S NECRONIC'S FAULT! *Points up*

The vertical resolution for a 1024x768 resolution would be 768. It's always horizontal x vertical.

To get DFG working, you need to divide 768 by 16 (yielding a result of 48, whereas 1024 [the recommended resolution] divided by 16 yields a result of 64 [the current amount of tiles]). What you do is search the downloaded files for the init.txt (NOTE: there are also .txt files called init MAX or somesuch, don't use those, just the init.txt file) and look for the text which says [FULLGRID:80:64] Here you edit the 64 with the required amount (48 in your case) and save the file.

HOWEVER, I think it would also be advisable to chance the horizontal resolution tiles accordingly seeing as 1280 is required but you have 1024.

If this crashes the game for some reason (unlikely, but you never know) just re-install.
