[Brazelton] Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Died today

Generally speaking, I don't like latin american writers. He was an exception.

I always remember one of the best opening lines in literature "Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendía was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice"

I just read yesterday that he was in poor health. The only book of his that I've read was Love in the Time of Cholera - which I liked, but not a lot. For the past few months I've wanted to get One Hundred Years of Solitude though. Godspeed.

Bummer. I keep on meaning to read One Hundred Years of Solitude but I keep on putting it off. I should remedy that.

I know I've heard the name, but a quick skim of his works doesn't reveal anything I remember. I wonder if his was one of the alternate things to read in my classes, and I never took advantage.
