guitar heads are welcome

I’ve just got a new job and I’ve decided that I’m going to start saving as much as possible for a new guitar that I’ll get in the next year. I want my dream guitar basically, I’ve had a look around but I’d like some recommendations as I’m sure the UG community know better…

Price range I suppose can range from £600 onwards to touching £1000, just make sure it’s worth it!

There are only a few requirements, my primary style is funk, so hopefully it could cater to this. I would really love some proper tuning stability which I never seem to get with my current guitars. I want to be able to properly bend and experiment with my guitar during solos/improvisations with my band - with no fear of going completely out of tune with everyone else. I just feel I need it to develop from the stage I’m currently at. I don’t know much about the options on that front, but locking tuning or whatever would certainly be welcome.

Following on from the ideal setup thing, I’d also like a recommendation for an ideal amp to go with that. I play mostly clean and I’ve always loved the “sparkle” of a Marshall so maybe something of that range?

Again - price, £600 and up to £1000.

Cheers.

I so wish I could join this conversation. Guitar is something I always wanted to play but I've never pulled the trigger.

I pulled that trigger, got a really nice acoustic and amp...and then the place where I bought it and was taking lessons went out of business less than a month later. This was additionally unfortunate because also I happened to be employed there at the time.
So I have some really nice gear, just sitting there.

I feel like funk is really more a function of the player vs the instrument (well, that's true for most about anything), but I'd probably look for something with single coils. Can't really go wrong with a Strat style guitar. Locking tuners are good, but depending on how aggressive you are with your bends, may be unsatisfactory. In which case probably want to take a look at locking trems. I've heard they're a pain in the ass though, I used to get by with just locking tuners and stretching my strings. I never used lots of bends, though.

If you're feeling adventurous, take a look at Shijie guitars. Chinese brand, but heard lots of good things, and are supposed to be fantastic value for the money.

Re: amps, can't help much there, if you like Marshalls, go for it! I've kinda been eyeing Blackstar amps, might be worth testing one out (the founders used to work at Marshall).

Too bad @KCWM isn't around anymore, he was a bit of a gearhead.
