Not the best known actor but he’s been in a number of things you’d know. He’s “oh that guy” when you see him.
I met John a number of years ago when he spoke at the funeral of a mutual friend. He recited the poem Go Down, Death. We spoke for a little while there but nothing major. A few years later I met him again at a radio station I was doing a comedy promo at and he remembered me.
I’m not going to say he and I were friends or even close acquaintances, but for a movie star, broadway actor, and father of an NBA player, John was never someone who forgot his roots or went big time.
