Netflix's Voltron

Just Netflix, eh? Voltron was my first foray into the giant fighting robot genre, and my gateway drug into Transformers. I'm sure this will suck, but I'm glad there's still interest.

Ooh boy...an American reboot of Voltron with a CGI mech...because that worked SO WELL on Nickelodeon. Actually, anyone remember that show? I have the vaguest of vague memories of it.

But hey at least they didn't make them dinosaurs like that one toy me and six people bought in the early 2000s.

Saw it. Loved it.

I didn't know that the Airbender/Korra showrunners where behind it. The animation and humor really stand out with it though.

There's plenty of nods to the old show, like when they launch the big ship they do the "activate interlocks, dynotherms bla bla bla" bit but that's the only time. When they form Voltron they still start with the lions flying up in formation but the sequence takes bout 10 seconds now rather than an entire minute like it used to.

Things are different, so if you literally can't handle any change to your precious nostalgia you probably won't like it. Keith isn't the leader, Princess Allura doesn't pilot a lion and pidge
is a girl
so if you can't handle that, probably don't bother.

I will say though that they've built a big world here but don't really go to any lengths to explore it for the most part. So the team is from Earth, like in the original show, but instead of being explorers who were out actively looking for Voltron they just kind of happen to stumble across it buuuuuuut also maybe it's destiny kinda? Basically certain aspects don't really make sense all that much, or at least not as much as I'd like from the creators of Avatar.

All in all I watched everything available so far in a day or two and really want more. 7/10 gained points for having the mice, lost points when Princess Allura showcased a new secret power she had twice in one episode.

I've only watched the first episode so far, but I really liked it. It reminded me why this was one of my favorite shows as a kid. So far the little changes here and there aren't bothering me (although I wish @phil 's spoiler tag was working, because I didn't know that yet) and that
Sven is now Shiro, I guess. Still holding out hope Allura will get in a lion at some point.
.

I was hoping they would have continued Voltron Force. We only had one season and I was enjoying it.

The good news, at least, is if this show is well-received and watched Netflix will most definitely order more seasons. They seem to treat their Originals extremely well compared to the big cable stations.

My only complaint is that the lion-heads don't roar at the end of the transformation sequence... we should start a petition to include that for s2.

My biggest complaint is they don't play the music. WHY CAN'T THEY PLAY THE FANFARE JUST ONCE?! (I know the rest is very 80's syn-heavy, but the trumpets at least? Pretty please?)

Saw to about episode 7 at my brother's place tonight. Liked what I've seen so far. My brother totally recognized Norman Reedus' voice right away in the episode with the two stranded rogues.

In the second episode, part of me just wishes Hunk's voice would magically become John Dimaggio's, JUST for the episode. This feels like it could easily be a Finn & Jake adventure.

EITHER WEITHERS-is she that bad? I think Kimberly is doing pretty good. I mean hell, to be able to transform from Jasper to Allura, that is fucking amazing.

Ok so season 3 is a little weak compared to the rest. It introduces elements that make it more like the 80s show. It also raises some questions that I hope get resolved sooner than later.

So I wonder if Shiro is a series of clones or something. Like they're just going to keep letting them escape and leading them to Voltron, though I don't know why they would have chosen shiro to start with. Also is Shiro Prime dead? Or what is different about him that the black lion would reject him now?

Still though I was hoping allura would have just taken over either the Red or Black lion. I get they made the triple switch to be more like the old show but I was fine with things being different. It still just felt weird with the shows rules is all I guess.

And why is the pilot of the black lion named "white"? Are they going for a whole ebony and ivory thing?

Works better thematically when he piloted the Blue lion in the OG series...and...still had a black costume. I'm glad they found a way for the Red ranger piloting the black lion to make sense in this series, because that ALWAYS bothered me.
