Well, I'm playing a pure tank orc. I did get a little pissed to discover one of the discoverable side quests you can get by reading a certain book leads to a place that can only be opened by a key from a quest from the mage's college, which means I'd have to level up my magic skill and go through the mage college quests just to complete it. Well, I guess that's what the console commands are for.
Yeah, but it's not oppressive or hurt game play. Complaining that you learn the first effect of alchemy from an item isn't even necessary. If you don't like eating the stuff to find the first property, just experiment with it.
I'm just royally ticked off that one of the main styles of gameplay I've enjoyed for the past 3 of the 5 games has been completely removed from the game and my favorite aspect of the game, the magic user, has been set up as an afterthought more than a feature.

I'm starting to wonder if this was a narrative decision, based on the location of the game. The people of Skyrim have a historic and well-known distrust of magic, as it was the tool of the elves that originally lived there that tried to drive the Nords from the region. As such, most Nords have no experience with magic beyond basic potions and enchantments, except for the ones who run into the crazy Conjurers and Necromancers that use magic to kill people. It certainly doesn't help that a major city in the region is thought to have been accidentally destroyed by the local College of Mages and the Thalmor are back in town, stirring up shit again.
Basically, it makes sense from a story perspective that your magic options would be more limited in Skyrim. The problem is that it hasn't been that way in any of the other games and no one tells you how limited the spell selection is. You can't even SEE some of the spells without reaching Master level in a school.
The game focuses on so many various things, various quests, various random situation and titles, everyone will eventually call you something different. To call it a "severe fail" is quite honestly a very personal opinion.
Since we're sharing opinions.... here's mine. If you dislike the game so much, why do you keep playing when you have so many other games are supposedly available? Did you even buy this game?
1: I'm calling the entire mage college storyline a fail due to how short, uninvolved, and having no real impact on the world it was.
2: I'm calling the entire (pure) mage class a fail due to how it's obvious they favored melee. Just playing my orc for a few hours has already shown me that. Power attacks, different styles of weapon = different effects, cinematic Slo-Mo kills for certain things. Dismember ment when you're lucky etc. Where was any of that for mages?
3: I'm calling the entire mage spell list a fail due to how all the destruction spells are the same. Fire/Frost/Shock due pretty much the exact same thing with a difference of damage vs damage/stamina vs damage/magic. All the cloak and rune spells do the exact same thing with a different "skin", Illusion spells are worthless (Invisibility doesn't work) and there is no Charm.
I can go on and on, the magic system in Skyrim being a fail isn't a personal opinion, that's just the sad truth of it. Skyrim as a "WHOLE GAME" is fantastic. I think that's where people are putting words in my mouth. I'm saying the game was marred in that core aspect and made it unenjoyable for me but the rest of the game has been great.
You can twin cast spells though! yeeeaaaah. Eh, mods that will fix those concerns when they will come.
Heck, there's already a UI mod for PC inventory management . Even in it's infant stages, it's soooo much better than the consolized UI that was provided.
Give it time, it'll come.
I already have a dozen mods installed and the new Nexus tool... even in it's beta stages is incredibly useful to find updates.
Shego, are you sneaking when you use Invisibility? Because the issue might be that they can still HEAR you, thus know where you are. I know I've used Invisibility to help with my thieving and it definitely works in that regard, as I've walked right in front of people while invisible and not been noticed. The only time it seems to not work is when I've attacked an enemy and I go invisible in their sight or nearby.
As for the College of Mages...
I have one beef with it: They NEVER explain to you what the Eye of Magnus does, why it's dangerous, or how the Thalmor knew what it was. It's just dangerous because some assholes in white robes say it is.
Link to the UI mod Jay? Also any you'd recommend for the betterment of Skyrim life would be nice. I haven't really give the mod community a look over yet as alot of early beta mods can make the game unstable.
So far, Bleez-Kigo is chopping up the country side in her Dwarven armor/weapon set, loving every second so far. I'm surprised that Dwarven is so far down the list though and Orc is higher, but I'm cool with that.
Here are mostly my beefs with the game, thankfully they don't take away much, but it's something. Going to put some in a spoiler tag since they often talk about storyline segments.
1) It needs more diplomatic options. I am sorry, but when I play these types of games, when both sides have good, honorable points about what they are doing, I hate not having an option to bring both sides together in a peaceful arrangement. You pretty much have to choose a side, and choosing one side leads to the total destruction of the other. I wanted a diplomatic solution to the issues. The same goes for the Greybeards and Blades, as later on I found myself locked out of the Blades quests because I don't want to kill Parthunax, which is stupid, since they are basically saying he deserves death for stuff he did thousands of years ago, which he openly seems to be trying to atone for through the Way of the Voice. They need ways I can bring both sides together in some sort of agreement or treaty. No matter how how my speech is I can't convince them to give him a chance, even after I saved the world from Alduin.
2) It needs to make followers a little more useful, and allow them to properly scale. I found out recently that the follower level generates when you first meet them, meaning later in the game Lydia, being often the first you get as a follower, is a decent low level. Worst for me, I switched it up so I had Aela as my follower later on, and she was even a lower level because I met her outside Whiterun when I first was walking there. While I loved having Aela around, she just didn't do enough. Other issues are the fact you can accidentally kill your follower unless you use the console to mark them as essential, and even using the console they still can, and often will, get in the way and take one smack from my own sword to put them down on one knee. Don't get me started on the horrible pathfinding too, they need a method from which to keep followers close to you without having to use the "wait" command. There were even times I had to avoid using my Shouts just because my follower walked right in the way and would go flying off the cliff with the bandits.
3) They need a way to turn down or at least mark certain quests inactive to remove them entirely from the main list. I had a random Argonian ask me to put out a fire in a lighthouse so a ship would crash, which we would then loot. I didn't want any part of it, not being a thief, but it gave me the quest all the same, which was stuck in my log the rest of the game. They also need ways one can alternately end quests, like allow me to turn in the Argonian to the authorities, or even convince him the idea is a bad one and to abandon it.
4) Speech is just silly. Why have intimidation and persuasion? They both are based on speech, and often times intimidation is more likely to work then persuade. They need to make it so intimidation is based on some other stats or even armor, so if I am walking around in full Ebony, I would be more likley to intimidate, but if I am naked, I would be less likely. Persuade should be the only one entirely based on Speech, and it also needs to be used more often (able to convince people more during quests, able to convince merchants to give further discounts other then the investment perk, maybe even convince a random person out in the wild to join you like those hunters, etc..)
5) Better chest organization and housing. Why is it that when I put stuff in a chest, it's all just in one inventory tree all random, while on my inventory or merchants it's organized by the item? The game obviously can organize, so why keep that off the barrels and junk? Also, why are all the houses so horrible about putting storage options near the items you would use them? Only two of the houses have a satchel next to the alchemy table for alchemy items, none of the arcane tables have a storage area for soul gems, making it so I have to go find a storage box in another room to put the stuff, example I had to store all my materials in the barrels above the stairs in my Riften house. Lastly, make a FAST TRAVEL location for houses, so I don't have to go to the city and walk to my house. This is not bad in places like Whiterun and Riften, since the house is right near the entrance, but it can get annoying in places like Windhelm and Solitude.
6) The inventory management in general. Don't think I really need to explain this, but it's obvious the inventory and skill systems were not made for a PC. I get so annoyed having to switch out shouts everytime I need to change when I should be able to set multiple hotkeys. I also hate it when I get disarmed and have to go pick up the item, reset it to favorite, load the favorite menu, and set the keybind again. Every damn time.

Open the console, click on your followers, type disable, enter, type enable, enter. They will auto-level with you.

Don't act like a console gamer getting KYed in the ass in terms of options, you're playing the PC version. So a UI Mod is already available, get it... FFS, it was commented on barely 3 posts ago. Or be proactive and search it yourself.
Scythe, I pretty much agree on all of those aspects. Especially the chest organization, I literally had to have a seperate chest for everything just to keep thing organized.
Jay, thanks for the ideas, killable children made me laugh.
Ty i will have to try this sometime. Also I hope they make a mod where I can talk to my henchmen during combat, I tel my companion to hold black soul gems so my Sulbane sword does not fill them with rat souls but sometimes a juciy enemy suprises me during exploration and I can't even get her to toss me a gem so I can fill it with a grand soul?
I got no issues with the UI. Added at: 18:47
Ya, randomly bumping into that child in Whiterun who goes" I don't fear you elders!" makes me want to sneak behind her and slit her throat. Heck, I've done it many many times.... than just reloaded to do it again.
Add 1000 cabbages, drop them all in the middle of an inn... watch NPCs KILL EACHOTHER OVER THEM... while cabbages are flying everywhere as they move...
I am honestly a little hesitant to mod the game. Historically, when I begin modding Elder Scrolls games, I never, ever end up finishing them. I only ever finished Oblivion and Morrowind on consoles, despite having played both 20 times longer on PC.
Ahh fuck it. MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD MOD.
I should be asleep right now for night shift. Fuck that.
The Nexus tool is very useful for modding and letting you know what updates are available. It's very rough, still in early beta but it's a solid application nonetheless.
Things I've learned about TES and Skyrim in particular.
1. I like that the high elves have been given some character other than snooty tall magic users. Having them be basically Tamriel's nazis is a pretty awesome move in my opinion.
2. I thought Boethiah's name was pronounced Bo-Thigh-Ah. Bowie-thee-ah sounds kind of goofy to me.
3. The vampire resolution in Skyrim is pretty weak in comparison to the older games, which definitely required a longer, more effort driven quest chain. Also, needs vampire clans like Morrowind.
4. I kind of agree with Shego about the mage's college but really, it's resolution is no less underwhelming than most of the factions. I haven't done the Dark Brotherhood yet so I don't know about them but I've been pretty underwhelmed with all of the factions so far. At least the mage's college has some pretty cool visuals with the Eye of Magnus and the Orrery knockoff room.
It seems like there's a deeper storyline going on with the vampires. It seems like they're trying to build a foothold. It may be that they're new to Skyrim? There were quite a few societal and geographic shake ups with the different power structures in Tamriel between Oblivion and Skyrim.

I liked the Thieve's Guild one a lot. Taking a down and out guild from nothing to beyond it's former glory, while avenging a former guildmaster and restoring the luck to all the thieves of the world? That was almost as good as the one in Oblivion, where you performed the Heist of the Century to reunite two lost loves. It really seems like the Thieve's Guild gets the best stories.
The Companions story was decent as well, though I'm kind of annoyed you couldn't use the same process on yourself. Hell, they even give you enough heads to do it to everyone afflicted...
