49ers looked great, and the Raiders didn't suck as much as I thought they would! Good times in the Bay Area.

Well the Giants gave the game to the Cowboys. But, what really shocked me was when the Cowboys took it...

#7

Covar

I hate how interceptions that bounce off a recievers hand, and travel 10 yards at an odd angle right into a lucky cornerbacks arms are charged against the QB. Seriously.

Similar with throws that are dropped by the receivers that should have been caught and are recorded as incomplete (which usually don't affect fantasy points). Baseball calls it an error and protects pitcher stats.

#9

blotsfan

blotsfan

It compensates for when qbs get an incomplete when the ball was right in the dbs hands, or when it's mis-thrown and the receiver makes a one handed grab.

Good teams find ways to win the game...

Panthers are now 2-14 in games that are decided by 7 points or less.

I seriously believe that this season is already over. The Panthers would have to somehow run the table on the rest of their schedule in order to reach the playoffs. I do not see anyway they could do that against the likes of the Giants, Patriots, and oh yeah the Saints and Falcons twice. We should go ahead and fire all of the coordinators and Ron Rivera. Do it now and immediately start the search for replacements.

#11

The Texans are the newest incarnation of the Cardiac Kids.

#12

I don't know. The secret to beating the Giants seems to be putting just enough pressure on Eli that he can't get a good pass off, but not so much that he doesn't think he can get a miraculous long bomb off. That, or he hasn't figured out yet that no matter how many times he throws the ball to his brother's friends, they're still not going to accept him as one of their own. The Panthers might be able to imitate that.

That was a crushing game (though I liked it a lot) but 0-2 to the playoffs is not that absurd. You'd have to go probably 10-4 the rest of the year which is difficult, but not unreasonable at all.

#14

General Specific

General Specific

Ok, maybe I was a little too harsh on the Panthers last week. 38-0 over the Giants. 7 sacks. Passing all over the field. Where the hell were these guys the first two games?

#15

General Specific

General Specific

Further on into the season now and I definitely overreacted. Defense has gotten together and are playing tremendously well. Newton is not the best right now, but we are doing enough to get wins. 10-9 over the 49ers last week was a hard game to watch. Monday night vs New England this week is going to be interesting.

Meh, color me unimpressed. I remember times watching the Packers on Monday nights in December when you couldn't see the field and there were snowbanks in the end zones because that was where it was shoveled as they were clearing the seating area.

I don't understand how the Pats can truly be such a second half team. There's nothing the first half, and it's like they come back out and announce they've actually decided to win. These comebacks are unbelievable, but lord knows that can't last.

Ehh, Boyce got wrapped up way before the ball got there, so that was clearly pass interference. And the refs haven't been giving the Pats the game - in fact, they handed one to the Jets by calling an Unsportsmanlike for pushing a player into the pile during a failed field goal - a dubious call at best, and the Jets got 15 and a fresh kick that won that game. That penalty hasn't been called since.

Quoted for truth. I said during the '08 Superbowl that the defensive line should have gotten MVP, because I feel like they won the game for the Giants. And I like Eli. I feel like he often gets more of the blame than he deserves. I don't think he's Peyton, but he can only do so much with a less-than-reliable offense. And I'm a life-long Giants fan, so today's game hurt a bit, but didn't surprise me.

Yeah, I will still be amazed if we beat the Saints next week. Especially after our showing in New Orleans. Still, Saints seem to be a much different team on the road and if we beat them and then also take down Tampa Bay again, we win the NFC South.

Well damn. Panthers lost. I can say that the 49ers did beat us. It would have been much less frustrating for me if the officiating was better, but we still could not make plays when we needed to. I guess the consolation is now I don't have to watch the Panthers go up to Seattle and get their asses handed to them. Have fun, SF!

I am now officially rooting for Payton Manning to win his second super bowl.

Go Seahawks
The latter is true. The backlash towards Johnny Football shows that disliking players for obnoxiousness isn't just by race.

That being said, I don't really care about it. From what it sounds like, Crabtree is a massive asshole and tried to fight Sherman at a charity event. Also, I can't blame him for being pumped right after the biggest moment of his career.

#92

So let me get this straight, a dude blows up at a sideline reporter (although she wasn't the target, which wasn't apparent initially) and acts like a massive douchenozzle, has a history of doing just this...and we are disgusted because we're racist?

I can't speak for everyone, but color plays no factor for me when someone acts like an ass. I hated Shockey when he was one of the Giants and couldn't wait until we got rid of him. Acting like a jerk isn't excusable, no matter who it is. Same reason I intensely dislike Tom Brady and Tiki Barber(sad, 'cause I used to really like Barber) for being child-abandoning bastards.

#97

Celt Z

I didn't say YOU were racist, guys, calm down. No one here called him a thug at least.
I have no doubt that some of the people coming down on Sherman because he's black, but I think saying "a lot" of his critics are doing so is an over-statement. Like Timmus said, he deviated from what is considered an acceptable response. It's considered poor sportmanship for anyone, regardless of race or gender, to say those things in a nationally televised interview. You save that for the locker room or private or whatever. Yes, he was excited and there is most likely 9and probably deserved) bad blood between him and Crabtree, but this isn't the forum where you air it.

Besides, it's not like national opinion hasn't been know to turn on anyone who says something stupid in public. Generally, we want our "winners" to be gracious.

"You expect these guys to play like maniacs and animals for 60 minutes,” she said. “And then 90 seconds after he makes a career-defining, game-changing play... that’s why we grab them right after games because we hope they lose their minds like that, we hope they show pure joy. We hope he does the same thing at the Super Bowl."

"That was awesome. That was so awesome. And I loved it.”

I think whether you disapprove of Sherman depends a lot more on whether you're a seahawks fan or not than if you're racist.

#101

Dave

Dave

Apparently, Sherman's numbers really back him up for INTs, which is a surprise to me. Guess I haven't watched enough Seahawks to really take notice.

He was targeted a grand total of 58 times this season (as of January 17 - add two more targets from the 49er's game) and had 8 INT's.

He also gave up 30 receptions, which is over 50% completion rate when targeting him. In addition, addition, give him 7 penalties, which effectively makes this 37 receptions, for a rate of 37/58 (63%).

Boykin allowed 52 receptions and had 3 penalties, for a total of 55/89 (61.7%)

So it's pretty close, but I'd still give Boykin the edge. Sherman is very all or nothing.

And he has an ego to match, which is what I can't stand. I mean, Ochocinco had an ego, but instead of being in your face, everyone liked him and his antics. He was having fun. Sherman just comes across like a douchebag.

Ohana Day was a bit disappointing. My impression was that all military kids would have a chance to go on the field and that we would have "special" seating. The seats we had were too high for the mascots to reach when they threw t-shirts. It seemed like they picked kids to go on the field prior to the practice. The announcer said the kids were participants in Play 60...but all of the youth sports programs on base are part of Play 60. Which means Noah should have been able to participate. Nope, not the way it went down. They brought out the mascots and cheerleaders to do routines and play with the kids who were on the field.
The practice itself didn't start until an hour after we got there. Even then we only saw Team Deion since they were holding practice separately (really?) and they didn't introduce the players. The seats we had were directly in the sun, but on the 50 yard line. So we got a great view of the field, but it was hot. Lily was playing games on Shawn's phone. Noah was not having fun either since we just sat there waiting for some real action to begin. We decided to try to move to another section that was shadier only to find out that it was reserved. What? This was an open to the public, free event. I asked the kids if they wanted to leave and they both said yes. For a fun family event it sure didn't feel that way. The San Diego Padres could teach the NFL a few things about family day.

Originally I was going to go to Shanghai to watch the game, but I was *very* politely informed by my fiance that leaving on the 2nd to make sure I see the game would not be in my best interest especially if some of her family members are planning on giving out a few 红包s which would require my presence to receive them.

We're expected to attend one of my husband's family's CNY celebrations *on* Super Bowl Sunday, but I think they planned the party around football fans, because it's over by 3 PM. We go, eat, get our hong bao and get home plenty of time before kick-off. :D

This is also why I like my mother-in-law's annual CNY planning; we always host the party on a Saturday close to the start of CNY. This way we get big family party, but she gets to invites her friends that would otherwise be occupied with their own family's celebrations (ditto for our friends) and we never have to miss a Super Bowl.

I think it's only a matter of time before the Pro Bowl is played on Madden.

With all the players on the field, in rolling recliners that minions have to move around just like they're in the game.

Reading Engadget's Super Bowl viewing guide I just heard the best argument for why I should upgrade my soundbar to an full surround system.

If you tire of Joe Buck and Troy Aikman's call, a well-known trick to eliminate commentary is to pull the center channel from your surround sound system ..., which is usually the only one with the broadcaster's voices, leaving only stadium sounds from the other speakers.
That might be the greatest thing I've ever heard.

You who never had the privilege of seeing him play don't understand: Ray Guy changed games. He would punt, the ball would be up in the air so long that one of the Raiders' coverage team could literally go down and catch it on the 5 - and the Raider D would just push the opposing team back into the end zone.

Hey, so has Shaq Gretsky helped the Florida Argonauts win the Golden Gloves by shooting a 3-point birdie from the blue line yet?

...

This is why you never see me in the Sports subforum.

Amazing. The Broncos finally scored. I was beginning to wonder if they knew where the end zone was.

Of course they do.

Raise your hand if you ever heard of "Malcom Smith" before today.

Nope, didn't think so.

Cue the "Denver Bronco World Champion t-shirts headed for Haiti" jokes.

Had a feeling Seattle would win, but damn. Bruno Mars and the Hooligans coulda put up a better fight.

His legs know nothing of gravity.

I was expecting Seattle to squeak out a victory. But 3 minutes in they had it won.

I threw that out there at the party we went to this afternoon. By the end of the 3rd quarter it was pretty clear that Seattle had won. They needed to call mercy and let it go.

And lose those hundreds of millions of eyes glued to the set for their advertising? Yeah right :p

But yeah, that wasn't the best game I've ever seen*

*I've seen about 2 and 1/2 games of American Football in my life, so this may not be saying much :p

Didn't see a minute of it. By the time I woke up and saw the score alerts on my phone, I didn't have to.
