Sounds like something out of a Looney Toons cartoon... some sort of 'who can lay the biggest egg' contest, so the ugly, dumpy hen goes through all these exercises and diets to try to make her typically tiny eggs big, then she ends up drinking some weird tonic that a passing salesman has. The normal dosage makes her eggs a little bigger, so she drinks the whole bottle and BOOM! Gigantic egg.

Of course, in the cartoon the hen lives and is adored by all instead of dying

Kinda. The egg was too large, she couldn't lay it, and it killed her.
