Dear davejay.

I got a tv for Christmas! Yay! This allowed me to put my old tv in my room and I am thus thinking about my gaming options again.

In your opinion, what should I go with?

A) xbox
B) ps3
C) PC
D)reject this reality and substitute my own
E) grue station 780.


I think (think!) I could use my new tv as a monitor for a gaming rig. That would be hella awesome as its 1080p and 46 inches. However I recognize this as my most expensive option as any decent gaming PC is going to run me probably a good 800+. It is the most attractive option though as it will grant me access to the most games.

That being said there's still the option to get a console. Pros being that it'll be cheaper and easier all around. But then the question is which system?

So WWHD? What would Halforums do?

It depends on your taste in games. The 360's mostly your macho boom-boom-boom games like Halo and Gears of War. PS3 has a wider array of games, like Little Big Planet, Uncharted, Heavy Rain, or the Team ICO games. Plus, you can play online for free with PS3, unlike needing an Xbox Live membership.

Then again, you're right that a PC gaming rig would give you the most versatility. But then, from what I understand, a number of PC ports from consoles aren't so good in the transition.

Which would you say has the better RPG selection?

I'm leaning toward getting a console for now, just to get my fix, and then save up for a rig.

Of the two I'm leaning toward PS3 mostly due to love of my ps2 and worries about the RROD.

PC. Easily has the most RPGs with the broadest variety of varieties, plus it has the option to mod RPGs like Skyrim, Fallout, etc.

If you're planning on getting a console now and a PC later, then consider what games you'll be able to get on PC later. For me, the PS3 has a lot more titles I want to play that aren't on PC than the 360 does. If I were to get one of the two, it would probably be PS3 because of that.

But then, from what I understand, a number of PC ports from consoles aren't so good in the transition.

And there are a number of excellent, or at least competent, ports as well. Plus there are quite a few multi-platform titles that are decidedly better on PC.

It also depends on the resolution of the TV. If it's a high def you should think about PS3 as it also plays Blu-Rays.

If you have a love for the PS2, I'd say go with the PS3, if only for their growing selection of PS2 remastered bundles. I've already got the Sly Cooper and Team ICO ones, not to mention eyeing the Metal Gear one.

RPG selection, I'm honestly not sure since I've kind of moved away from RPG's in the last decade. Not to mention how many games today have RPG elements in them that it's hard to figure out if there's a "true" RPG anymore. Aside from Skyrim, I suppose. Demon's Souls is a pretty good (if stupidly challenging) game. I don't think the 360 has a great selection of RPG's either, honestly.

Also, speaking as a PS3 owner, if you do go that route, I'd recommend getting the Plus membership. $50/year and every week, you get free stuff. This week, I got the Back to the Future game for free, along with Syphon Filter 1-3 for PS1 for free. It's not always that good, but sometimes they'll something like that at ya.

To clarify on the console portion of the question: my new Tv is a brand new 1080p widescreen that is in the living room. My old one is a 15 year old big screen that is now occupying about half my bedroom. if I go the console route I'd want something I could play on either, depending on how late it is.

Also, im of the impression that new ps3s don't play older generation games. My question is then, can I download older ones off of PSN? For example I missed god of war 2 and would like to play it before playing 3. Would that be a possibility?

But you can also get it for the 360.

A few companies (and more being announced - I think a Devil May Cry re-release just got announced, both for the PS3 and 360.) are re-releasing their popular PS2 games in HD for the PS3. Even the PS1 original Tomb Raider got a re-release.

I know both consoles are great, but I pretty much adore my PS3. I like the exclusive games and that it plays blu-ray movies.

I never bothered with a 360 because the major exclusives on the Xbox tend to be games like Halo and Gears of War and I really don't care about those series. However, do keep in mind that a good 90% of games that come out now are usually released for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

So either way I don't think you'd be screwing yourself out of the vast majority of games.

Oh, another thing to consider, if you like multiplayer: What platforms do your friends play? If most of your friends are on Xbox Live, then PS3 generally won't let you play with them. There isn't a lot of cross-platform multi-player out there.

What has everyone heard about/ experienced with failure rates for their console? One friend of mine claims that she knows more people that have had bad luck with the ps3 than 360. I'd always kind of imagined that to be the other way around though.

Not to take Xbox's side but don't forget that PS3 network was down for a month due to hackers recently. Both companies have issues in that department.

Also, Xbox is very clearly better for multiplayer interaction but if you're not interested in multiplayer games, you're definitely better off with PS3.

Xbox is better for multiplayer because of it's larger playerbase, hence quicker "ques" for games and more people playing older games. I never said it had better people.

I wouldn't know if PSN people are any better because I don't talk to them. Assassin's Creed multiplayer isn't really geared for shit-talk.

Heh, no, I know. As far as performance, Live is better. Playing online with strangers, though, is not exactly going to be a positive experience to listen to. That said, my only PSN experience was with Dead Rising 2 and didn't run into any jerks.

True, I mean I don't think I'll be doing THAT much multi playing but the occasional night of whatever shooter will certainly be had.

XBox has had an INSANE amount of account hacking for the past couple of years, but people are mostly hush over that. Also, no one remembers the month long XBox Live outage that happened near the beginning of the consoles life and when it did come back, Microsoft gave everyone that fucking terrible water XBLA game that no one would ever buy as a sorry bout that gift. You're right, they both definitely have had their issues.

And Nick, the only reason you don't hear that kind of language as much on PSN games is PS3 doesn't come standard with a headset.

Uncharted 2. Holyshitballs it's a fun game. I've actually only Played it once because I stayed up until like 5 am playing and I just can't do that shit anymore.

I know that my entire next day off will most likely be spent playing that or god of war 3.
