In general male cats will only attempt to mate with female cats that are in heat.
However, a cat neutered prior to achieving maturity is typically less aggressive, and may never take the alpha cat role in a group where non-neutered cats are present, or neutered cats that were fixed after achieving maturity.
Note that many aggressive attacks may appear to be similar to the same moves used when mating, but are not actually attempts to mate.

Cats yell for reasons other than love. In fact I'm guessing that cats yell far more frequently for non-amorous reasons than for amorous reasons.

Cats will often mount one another to show dominance, part of that posturing thing that goes one when trying to jockey for the position of Alpha.
