I think, if I remember right, this concept was first approached for people with some variety of autism spectrum disorder, in which human contact was difficult for them, but the comfort of hugging still felt reassuring. Which still seems sad, but not in a "Wow you're pathetic" kind of way.

Its like how the snuggie was originally made for people in wheelchairs. It might have started out with noble plans but when marketed for everyone just seems ridiculous/pathetic.
