A Taste for Musicals

Hey there, gang. I've been finding myself humming tunes from musicals lately, so I thought I might start a thread where we can all discuss musicals. What shows we like, what shows we don't, it doesn't matter. You can also include songs from musicals that you yourself may like.

Two songs running through my head today:

As someone who recently handed in his thesis proposal, this song has been running around in my head quite a lot:

Personally, Jekyll and Hyde is one of my favorite musicals, the music is deliciously hummable, and its main theme of duality is something I agree with.

I enjoy some Sondheim. My favorites are probably A Little Night Music and Sweeny Todd:

George Hearn is the greatest....

That said, there are a lot of musicals I don't like at all. And it bothers me when people want to take any and every story and try to slap music into it.

First two posts contain musicals used by my high school for marching band, heh.

I love Little Shop of Horrors, Sweeny Todd, and Dr. Horrible (it's a musical, shut up). I'm heading to bed soon and can't look it up now, but check out Batboy if you can, it's hilarious.

My favorite musical is Sondheim's Into the Woods, the second act in particular.

You know the crap has hit the fan when even
the narrator dies.

Urinetown is pretty awesome, also.

URINETOWN. When my voice teacher told me about that one I wanted to see it so bad. Never got to. :( I bet it's awesome.

Jesus Christ Superstar is one of my favorite musicals. It does the best of portraying Judas and Jesus as real characters to me than any other depiction of them I've seen.

I know how you feel. Not everything needs to be made into a musical. For example, while I have seen Nine, I think Fellini's film 8 1/2 is far superior.

Another such show I've seen is Billy Elliott, which I saw on Broadway in December of '08. It was okay, but I like the original film better. Its collection of songs isn't really one to stick with you, though one song might become a bit of an ear worm.

One of my alltime favorite musicals, but only because of the greatness that is Michael Crawford as the Phantom.
Sarah Brigthman's great in her own way, but Crawford really totally makes this musical for me.

Believe it or not, there was a Batman musical in the works during the '90s. Michael Crawford was going to have been in it as the Joker.

Oh my God, Phil, Jesus Christ Superstar is awesome! I love listening to the crucifixion track in my car while I'm driving. It's such a weird and haunting piece.

I saw a musical adaptation of Zorro while I was in London. All of my theatre major friends loved it to death, but I was unimpressed. It had good fight choreography, but that's about it.

I hate the Camelot musical. There are some really talented people on the version of the soundtrack that I grew up with. But... blech.

And I can't believe I forgot to mention two that I must watch once a year or so---

And this one is special to me, because it's the first one I ever saw:

The Muppets, Sound of Music, Oklahoma, South Park (I've only seen movie versions!)

I haven't seen any musicals in person. I'm not really a theater person. I like going to jazz and classical recitals, but musicals have never been my thing.

Oh! Also, Fantasticks and Man of La Mancha.

(This was the character my dad played when he did the musical in high school, also)

And I love this one because of him, used to hear the soundtrack all the time growing up

Man of La Mancha is definitely my favorite, followed by Into the Woods, both of which have already been mentioned. :)

I <3 Bernadette Peters.

I would like Seasons of Love more if I didn't hear it to death within months of that musical hitting Broadway.

This. So many times this. The song still sends my brother into fits of rage because his ex listened to it on a mix CD nearly every time he was in her car.

Let's see - Musicals that I either have seen and/or listen to: (I'll post videos when I get home from work if people want).

Jekyll & Hyde

Wicked

Phantom of the Opera (Andrew Lloyd Weber)

Cats (Andrew Lloyd Weber)

Starlight Express (Andrew Lloyd Weber)

Man of La Mancha

Ew.. Ew... EW. Why? Why? Why? This is the worst rendition I've heard since a high school broadway review.

I am sad. I didn't even like Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Armfeldt. Too bad, I've been waiting and waiting for a revival... a good one.

I'm a huge fan of musicals, but I did have a great moment with my daughter the other day when she voiced my very own thoughts about them.

"You know when everyone just starts singing, and they're all doing the same dance and everything, even though it doesn't seem like they were planning on it or talked about it earlier? That just doesn't make any sense to me."

Here's a new musical that opens this Monday on Broadway: The Addams Family.

Basic plot info: Wednesday Addams, now 18, is experiencing love for the first time. Gomez and Morticia want to have the boy and his parents over for dinner. Mayhem ensues.

Here's a demo of one of the songs from said musical. It's the Joker's song, also known as Wonderful Toys.

That's just... awful.

It's an annoying tune, the lyrics are repetitive and seem like they add little to nothing to the plot, theme, or characterization, and it just seems like it's trying to be clever, but it fails.

I hate songs like that. They just make me think "Get on with it!" and ponder the idea of exiting the theatre quickly.
