Wasn't this shit supposed to stop after I stopped being a teenager? I detest it with a fiery passion... At times it has been physically painful.

Argh. Nothing seems to get rid of it, and certainly not for very long. The only success I had was with this one drug that basically shuts your pores (as it was explained to me, anyway), but that comes with the neat side effects of super dry skin and not being able to sweat, increasing your risk for heat exhaustion and such. NEAT. But maybe it's worth it.

I still get zits despite being well into my 20's. My mom has had some degree of acne all her life. It's just something you'll have to learn to manage. Keep looking for other methods/products, clean your face regularly, and avoid touching your face with dirty hands as much as possible.

I'm in my 40s and my skin still acts like I'm 16. On top of that, I have roscasea (yay me), so my doctor prescribed trentinoin (retin-A) for both. I'm still dealing with roscasea but the acne is gone.
Go see your doctor and get him to recommend a dermatologist. If you have surface acne (mainly whiteheads on the surface of the skin), get a mild non-soap cleanser and gently wash your skin morning and night with warm water. After washing, pat your skin dry with a soft towel. Do not rub with a wash cloth or the towel, or use loofas or anything else that is abrasive. After drying, wait about 10 minutes, then apply a light moisterizing lotion (avoid heavy lotions with cocoa butter or oils). If you can, avoid alcohol-based products.
If you have deep acne (cyst-like inflammation deeper within the skin), you will probably also need a combination of topical cream and an antibiotic to keep it under control.
Good luck with it.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor. I make recommendations based on my own personal experience. Anyone who takes my advise may wind up collecting ferrets for a hobby. You have been warned.

You might try changing your pillowcase regularly (assuming your acne is on your face).
-edit-
And by regularly I mean somewhere between weekly to daily, depending on if oily skin is your problem. Wash your pillows, too.

That. I had the same problem. Would wash the hell out of my face every day and no luck. Was told about the pillows and bam, clear skin since.

Nizoral may help, too. It reduces the effects of testosterone on your sebaceous glands (ie, they secrete less oil). It's great at keeping down beard itch.

Oils in hair will cause acne, so if you're someone who touches your hair or has long hair, it could cause some. But if it's painful, you probably have a bigger problem.

Ok, I'll put in my 2 cents:

Drink water. Only water.

Shower with lukewarm water. Not freezing cold; not steam bath hot. Lukewarm as in it's only warm enough not to jump out of the tub screaming.

Put a fresh linen washcloth on your pillow every night.

Use mild soap like Neutrogena on your face.

Use gel; not aftershave, after shaving.

Exercise. Yes. Exercise. Sweat pushes bacteria out of your pores and onto the surface of your skin. Shower afterwards.

Don't eat fatty/oily foods. Chips, French Fries, chocolate.

Get out into the sun. Get a light tan. Use like SPF 15 sunblock; don't roast, or get burned, but take your shirt off and do some outdoor work. Again sweat helps to push bacteria out of your pores and the UV rays from the sun will fuck up bacteria on your skin and in your skin.

Aside from the washcloth and water only rule, I stick to a lot of these things on a daily basis and get a pimple or two once in a blue moon.

If you still have trouble, you should see a Dermatologist for some treatments. But in addition to medication, he'll tell you the same stuff I just listed.

Is acne genetic? I wonder because I have never really had any zits even in high school but my sister has godawful acne. Or is it just how you take care of your skin?

My sister was always the athletic active one who washed her face every day and I rinse only with water. She still has acne at 23 and I am clear skinned. My mom is pretty clear skinned. I don't know I am just curious about the genetic aspect of it.

Yeah, there is a correlation between genetics and how bad your acne can be. If your parents have bad skin, chances are you will too. Similar to like if your parents have bad teeth, eyes, etc... your chances of getting those faults also increases.

Oh fuck you, I was dragged to that movie by my then girlfriend and had suppressed the Girard Depardieu ass until your post reminded me

Ok, I have a simple solution that my brother would use to clear his face up.

Go to McDonalds or Burger-king or the fast food establishment of your choice.
Order a burger with preferably bacon, and at least two "beef" patties.
Discard the buns, preferably with a bit of hatred in your heart to start working up a sweat to clear your pores.
Rub the "beef" patties all over your face.
Eat the bacon because...you know...bacon
Post results.

TIP:
Order your food to go and do this at home. You wouldn't want to look like a weirdo.
