Alan Wake

Why do so many awesome games have to come out at once?

I hadn't planned on getting any new games, but when a co-worker offered to sell this one, which he had just bought, for $20, I had to jump at the opportunity. Now, I wish I had bought the limited edition, with the director's commentary.

This game is great! And fucking scary. It bills itself as a psychological thriller, which I suppose is so you don't confuse it for a survival-horror. I've never felt that I needed to conserve and survive, but there have been some creepy, awesome scenery. The game is present in an episode format, with each episode so far being a single day, complete with end theme and a 'previously on' start to the next episode.

The story is about Alan Wake, a famous horror writer that's had writers block for the past two years. He and his wife travel to Bright Falls, a rural new england town, for some rest and relaxation. Dark things hide in the shadows of the town though, and soon Wake finds his wife missing, and discovers pages of a manuscript he doesn't remember writing, foretelling dark and terrible things that are to happen.

I read about this before and for the first time since Dead Rising, makes me wish I had a 360.

It seems like a mix between Silent Hill, Stephen King's The Dark Side and...erm, that wicked and totally weird show in the 80s that I'm blanking on.

I'd heard about this from a few different sources, but that trailer might have sold me on it. I'll have to see about picking it up once I'm done with Red Dead Redemption.

Twin Peaks.[/QUOTE]There's a definite Twin Peaks vibe in this game, but I also got an early X-files vibe from this game as well. I mean that in the best possible sense, since that was when the X-files was good. :p

I'm enjoying the hell out of this game so far. It looks and plays beautifully and the story is quite engaging. Definitely worth getting if you have a 360.

I

Iaculus

Is it just me, or does the protagonist bear a suspicious resemblance to Barney Calhoun?

I wish this shit had been a PC game, like it was for 4 fucking years before it became 360 exclusive.

This.

I'll probably rent it or buy it once it's in a bargain bin next year though. These sort of games are right up my alley.

Hmmm. I"ll admit, I'm not a huge fan of most psychological horror games, but I thought Eternal Darkness was one of the greatest things ever.

How do they compare?

I think that's unfair, because those of us who are into psychological horror games also recognize Eternal Darkness as amazing. I wouldn't require any of those types of games to come out to match up to Eternal Darkness just because it's unfair.

Damn, I'm so glad Spoony recommended that game last Halloween. What a gem. I hope they do make a sequel someday.

Hmmm, how does Alan Wake compare, then, if that's easier?
