So, a friend of mine directed me to Alien Swarm, a top-down four-player co-op shooter that's available on Steam for free. I haven't finished downloading it yet, but it looks like it could be a lot of fun.

Has anyone else checked this game out? It seems like a kind of aliens-themed arcade-style shooter, and it looks surprisingly good for a free game.

I tried the single player. To be honest, I found it a bit "meh," not really something I'd play obsessively like TF2.

I haven't tried the multiplayer yet.

I played it, and liked it a lot. Not enough to stop playing the other games in my queue, but I'll definitely come back to it at some point.

Can't get it work reliably on my computer for some reason, which is strange. I've got more advanced games running just fine. Anyway, it looks fun and you can't beat the price. :)

Finally downloaded it, and tried out the single player mode. Seems like a fun, mindless shoot-em-up in the vein of Hunter: The Reckoning, and it should be a blast to play with friends.

It is pretty fun :) I just try it out. It is pretty easy. Some classes and such to make life easier, but unless you know the map (I don't) I don't know what to bring so I just go around gun blazing ;)

The tech can weld doors and hack control panals

the heavy has turrets
Actually they have more than that. The loadout can be changed before a mission, so a heavy doesn't have to carry the turret if they've got something else they'd rather carry. Same for a tech and the welder (though it's pretty necessary on some missions). There are a ton of unlockables. I haven't earned much myself, but even right out of the gate there are a few choices, but it's not obvious that the option is there.

Just downloaded and installed it the other day, ran the offline practice once. Seems like a lot of fun, provided you play with friends. Online gaming and friendly fire usually end up in 99% shit games.

I get lots of friendly fire. I do try to be careful, but when someone decides to sprint in front of you while blazing a heavy machine gun, there is nothing I can do about it.
