Russell Johnson, who played the Professor on "Gilligan's Island" and Doctor Steve Carlson in "This Island Earth", died today of kidney failure. He was 89 years old.

Now that basketball team will have to get a new announcer (don't remember which one).

So that's 5* gone (Skipper, Gilligan, Thurston Howell III, Lovey Howell, and The Professor). Only Ginger(I), Ginger(II), and Mary Ann remain.

*6, if you count the radio announcer guy.

Gratuitous:

You can build a fully functioning radio out of coconut shells, but you can't patch a hole in a boat?

I'll be honest. I didn't even think any of the original cast was still alive.

Actually, I remember from an early episode that they did patch the boat, but it was with some nails they found in a box that was made out of blasting powder or something, and the remains of the boat blew up.

There was also an episode where they made some miracle glue out of something Gilligan found, but then they discovered it only lasted a set amount of time, so the boat fell apart and sank as they tried to get out of the lagoon.

Ah, yes, here it is: Season 1 Episode 8 Goodbye Island
"Gilligan's attempt to turn sap into maple syrup yields a substance that is stronger than glue. The castaways patch up the Minnow and prepare to go back out to sea."

Also known as "Gilligan accidentally replicates Peter Parker's webfluid recipe."
