any good storage solutions for dvd's?

hell I figured it was worth asking. I am looking for some more dvd shelving units for my home office, and I am fairly sick of paying the furniture dealers a few hundred dollars for what I have come to find out is fiber board >_>.....

any good advice for places to get decent sturdy shelving is appreciated.

EDIT: actually any good visible storage solution would be taken under consideration.

True solid wood furniture is pretty fricken expensive now. You will now see plywood used in fairly upscale furniture.

That thing in Dave's link looks nice but it will be press board too.

You're right - I should have checked the weight. I saw the finish and thought that was the actual wood and not just the finish.

There's always ikea.

Alternatively, you could move to digital storage, buy a big external harddrive, and rip your dvds to it to have all your media in a much more compact space.

This wouldn't help you with where to put the physical discs, though.

Why not just build your own bookshelf? Its not expensive, assuming you have the tools, and its a lot of fun. The cost will be :

Lumber will be like 50$ at the most
Brackets another 20 or so
then stain and brush ~30$ or so

total cost, 100$

And you can make anything you want. Even something that falls down every time someone looks at it wrong.


I would avoid home depot though, as they thing this is a good enough piece of pine to use as a thumbnail:



Knots are pretty, but also compromise the structural properties of the wood.

is anything from Ikea a worthwhile purchase? I live in the Twin Cities and their is a GIANT IKEA in the same area as the Mall of America. worthwhile trip?

Why not get a cylinder? Put all the discs in it (they have numbers on the bottom, so each disc has a number) and put the cover art in the book it comes with, in the same order as the discs. I know you'd have to get rid of the plastic boxes, but that's really what takes up so much space. I ditched the boxes and have nearly 100 movies in a single cylinder. It'd be ridiculous trying to find space for all that elsewhere.

I actually want the stuff on display, I have tons of those compact storage units, they irk me in so many ways unspeakable.

Ikea is great for cheap particle-board furniture that also doesn't look like crap, is of decent build quality, and is easily assembled. If you anticipate having to move your furniture any time in the next few years more than once, Ikea furniture is great to have because it's light and easy to disassemble again.

However, if you're set on solid wood that will last 10 years minimum, Ikea's not a solution. Just be prepared to pay actual money, or build it yourself, as Necro suggests.

I am actually reconsidering the fiberboard, the last one I bought was basically built with staples, tape, and a lot of praying...that was until my dear old dad stopped by and took it upon himself to shore it up with metal and pure awesome.

I like the ones that rotate. The whole shelf rotates I mean. Right now all mine are in a cd case. It makes me sad. It also makes me scared because if someone stole the suitcase there goes 200 DVDs. that's quite a loss.

this is roughly what i was talking about 4-Sided Revolving DVD Media Tower - 1600 CD / 756 DVD Capacity - Multiple Finish Ergo In Demand it's made of laminate though. I think the one i saw before was actual wood and cost about 600 bucks.

I have a friend who stores a lot of dvds ill ask him what he uses.

Yeah I don't buy a DVD unless it's a movie I will watch at least 2-3x a year, guaranteed. Otherwise I just feel it's a waste of money.

There are some VERY good films that I won't buy because they're only good the first time you watch them.
