I missed posting this last night. Just a rough Fade sketch. Now that I've changed jobs, I should have time to actually draw Fade. I just need to get my art stuff down here. I'm living in a hotel room by myself until our house sells. So please forgive the iPhone shot. I don't have a scanner right now.

No one ever suspected the Sixpackshaker's testicle would abandon him.

Least of all the Shaker.

Now, he's back, and his gun ain't the only thing he's carrying to the left.

The Sixpackshaker is

Awww yisss.

Huevo Ranchero is a great subtitle and I wish I could like it twice.

Curious if stienman would be offended if I drew him as a pimp Joseph Smith with his arms around multiple wives all flashing wedding rings as bling, while wearing the golden plates on a phat chain around his neck.

Also, reading up on this, I wonder if the corrupted Palantir was inspired by the seer stones...

As someone with a largely Mormon family, I would find that hilarious.

Sorry...away from drawing supplies until monday. Will resume ASAP.

Wait... nevermind, I found some pencils and paper. And a scanner!

With apologies to one of the nicest guys on this forum. I hope this doesn't offend you too much, Gusto:

Thanks. Wish I'd get more feedback on these things.

Made a poster for Fade.

That is an excellent promo poster! If I had to nit pick one thing it would be the large amount of empty space at the bottom.

Biannoshufu

Are you just hateful of ink?

or does it scare you like a vagina shark?

I ask, because pencil can give great tone, but blah black. India ink totally rocks tones and can give great, juicy black. (esp with a brush, but even with a rapidograph set ))

i may have asked this before, and if yes sorry, I've forgotten. It tends to fade away.

#18

fade

fade

I was afraid vagina sharks might exist. The movie "Teeth" confirmed every fear I had as a teenage boy.

The truth is that I am terrible at inking. I inked at first, but I kept ruining the pencils. I have tried pens and brushes. I love the look of a brush....when it works. But when you screw up brushed ink, it looks horrible.

Sin: I meant to put "WIP" on the post. I have plans for the bottom, but I got tired.

Tracing paper over the top of your pencils and practice your brushstrokes?

I'd certainly be interested in seeing you try!

I like pencil drawings, personally. If I could, I'd give feedback, but what I know about art you could fit in a gnat's ear... and there'd still be room for other stuff.

I filled in the bottom, and threw on a level adjust layer, too.

the thing about the pencil works is that I'm not sure if the smears are intentional, or just a tired hand? But it detracts. Anyway, shutting up now.

#25

fade

fade

The smears are kind of intentional. I always liked the sort-of aged look they made. It was laziness at first, but then I started doing some of it on purpose. You guys suggested putting a piece of paper down and some commercial products, but I never did either as you can see.

I just realized Shegokigo never said a word about the devil girl. :(

At your suggestion to Gusto, though, I did some speed sketches tonight. Less than 5 min each, always keeping the hand moving. I was drawing from some stuff a better artist than me did, who frequented the same art forum on which I met fennewalde.

More speed sketching. I tried the girl from Gusto's thread.

A weird piece of scanner fuzz is on her eyelid, making her look like a zombie. Her eyes are supposed to be closed like in the reference, but it looks for all the world like she's looking upward nastily.

Draw what you see, not what you know.

I appreciate the advice, and I'm not sure I completely agree with that sentiment. I think it depends on the objective of the drawing.

I have NO idea how I kept missing this thread!!!
@Post #2 - Maybe I've got goblins on the mind but I get a "goblin child" staring out a window, thinking if he'll ever see another of his kin, while his kind human guardian looks at him, assuring him that he will.
@Post#3 - That moon is pure win. I can't even describe it any other way!
@Post#4 - That first pic is fantastic. I see it like some weird alternate reality where androids with no faces live lives like ours, as seen in that X-Mas card!
@Post#5 - Maybe it's my ego but I freakin love this pic. It's going in my "Fade Folder". Don't believe me?

To show a couple that I've saved over the years. Post#5 is definitely being added to that list.
@Post#6 - Combining two of my favorite things? Joker + DBZ??? Most definitely an awesome pic!
--- More critiques to come!

Thanks for the compliments. I'm glad you've liked the drawings I made for you. I have a scan of that devil girl if you prefer.

In the spoilered Gusto pic, I was trying to go for out-clevering the clever, like Tarantino did with the Bad Motherfucker wallet. Awesome scene. You think he's speaking metaphorically, but then, BAM, it really says BMF.

Anyway, here you go, CG. Not the greatest, sorry. I don't like drawing guys as much as women. Partly for the obvious reason, but also because I think guys are a lot easier. They're all blocky and fit together like puzzles. Women are smooth and curvy. I guess a realistic skinny dude would be hard (ha). I should try that.

Didn't know if you wanted medium sized or beefcake.

Meg and Chris are the most successful for me. The head shapes are stronger than the others IMO. I find chris especially intriguing because it's so obviously chris and yet so different. It's borderline scary.

And i want to say top left is fry from futurama. y/n?

#46

fade

fade

It's supposed to be Bart Simpson. I actually thought Meg was the weakest in the lot, because she's too similar to the original. My favorite was Peter. I'm not very good with cartoony styles, so I'm trying to push myself. One of the reasons I took such a long hiatus from Fade was because I just couldn't see much artistic point to it. I am in love with the story, but the art is too generic and realistic. I would like to be able to do something in the land between cartoony and realistic. Like Don Bluth. His stuff is incredible. How many of my quarters went into Dragon's Lair just to see Daphne?

These last 3 posts were very good. The one of the crying girl is very touching. I could never make little "grip" lines like that. Thanks for all the dude pics. :)

#48

fade

fade

I've been distracted in the evenings by something else I'm working on. Kind of a sophomore piece, if you will. Something that grew out of the ideas I was trying to establish with Fade, and that will still be there. I just wondered what would happen if I took it to the extreme. I really wanted to play with the roles of "good" and "evil" with Fade. You were to question whether Holt himself was a good guy. But not really in the blatant Punisher kind of way. More subtly. But I was wondering, what if you took that to the literal end?

So I started working up this idea...I drew some storyboards, which is where this was going. I could scan them. But the idea was to take the "ultimate" evil, the devil himself, and make you root for him. I know this has been done before. Dexter is a good example. But I don't want to do it that way. No demons, no scary stuff from the devil at all. I've in fact spoiled the ending. Because I wanted to write it as a superhero story, with you rooting the whole time for this hero who does everything right according to the annals of superhero-dom. Only in the end you find out, much to your surprise--and his, for that matter--that he is in fact the coming of the devil from Revelation. He didn't know this, though he finds out. I admit taking inspiration from some of the interpretations of the gospels that say Jesus was choosing Judas rather than prophesying when he said "one of you will betray me". What if the reason the devil stood against god was not at all what you thought it was? What if he did it because he thought that God wasn't doing enough to help people? What if he was an extreme bleeding heart, who felt for everyone who hurt, and decided that the way the world was running wasn't right? Who fits the definition of good then?

Granted, this has been explored many times before, too. Even Star Wars had Vader taking power in order to make a "better" place. But even then, those characters are usually obviously evil. Here, you might even say that my devil was obviously good. In the end, though, he is still the Enemy, because he stands against the big plan. He takes free will away from people. Worse, he takes accountability and responsibility away by being the ubiquitous hero. It'd be a perfect RPG type of growth, too. From ordinary man who is sick of hurt and death, to a superhuman of extreme power. With the exception of course of anyone who reads this, I'd love to do it as a Bruce Willis is dead, or "Would you kindly" revelation. That way, you don't get lost in the religious aspect of it, just like Sixth Sense never bothers explaining much about death or the afterlife.

Anyway, that's enough of a ramble...

Also, I thought of this idea a while ago, and only recently revisited it. I shelved it for a while. Why? Partly because I was worried as a card-carrying liberal that the idea could be interpreted as a conservative libertarian manifesto, which I don't mean it as at all.
