I'm a little wary after the disaster that was Lookouts.
Well, seeing as it came from Gabe's twitter that he was working on it, I doubt we have reason to fear.

Hence my excitement.

I'm still pissed off about Lookouts, so I think I'm going to leave this alone for a while. I want to like it, and I like the concept, but all I can really think of is, "Why are they putting their talent into this, yet contracted Lookouts to someone else?"

Because Automata won the poll?

No, they never told us who won the second poll that had just two options. They merely said, "Too close to call, we'll do everything!"

Then, of course, they only decided to do one thing.

... I actually liked Lookouts, so I don't know what he problem is.
A lot of people didn't, and were upset that it was farmed out to "Guests", when most were expecting Gabe and Tycho to be working on it. The differences in styles were quite jarring, and I for one found it to be unpleasantly so.

Oh, I didn't mind that. I was annoyed that they said they'd get to both of them, just the poll was going to determine which one they did first...then ended up giving Lookouts to somebody else while they waited and worked on Automata. I have no problem with them doing that on Automata, but I would've rather waited a longer time for Lookouts than feel like I had just had a bait-and-switch pulled on me.

And also, I'm betting, because of the shitstorm that surrounded the Lookouts being handed off to ... others.

I liked the idea of Lookouts, and I too would have preferred it if they had just deferred Lookouts until later and done it themselves. They still could, I guess.

Still, I'm glad they're doing Automata themselves, since I voted for it. :)

Automata looks GREAT! They should definately have done Lookouts themselves. This is good stuff.

What do we think of page 3?

I can't help but wonder where this would be going if that Heroes writer was given this project. :p

BECAUSE THE TITLE CONTAINS 'AUTO', ALL THE ROBOTS CAN TURN INTO CARS
Oh. And I bet they sacrifice bicycles to some sort of Basilisk or something too. And every time that there's a total solar eclipse (which happens every 2-3 weeks on average) the robots lose their ability to transform for 4d6 hours.

Man. We should totally write for Heroes.

Double good news. Gabe and Tycho are working on a Automata graphic novel and now Kurtz has announced he's putting Sunday Ding's on hold while HE works on his very own Ding graphic novel. The gods have smiled upon us TWICE!

A nickel says Gabe and Tycho finish ahead of schedule, while another nickel says we never see the Ding! graphic novel.

It would be going down, in a tightly winding death-spiral, with some dangerous explosions along the way.

I don't care. I just can't believe that they havent done a graphic novel sort of thing yet. I mean, with Gabe's talent, and Tycho's obvious love of fiction and whatnot ...

I am very excited for this project.

Kurz's ... if it happens, I'll be pleased, and might check it out. If it doesn't ... can't say I'd be hugely disappointed or shocked.

So hang on, how many Sunday Ding's did we get? That sure lasted a while...

So, I was going to make a new thread, but since it's also Penny-Arcade related, and Automata is still going on, I'll put it here.

Does anybody else think that the Penny-Arcade guys are actually retarded? I mean that in the best way possible. I'm excited to see where this Tekken thing goes. But ... really? Wow.

Not sure how to "best possible way" that comment. It makes sense that Game companies are looking to the PA guys to do comics for their games (I loved the FO III comics) and this looks like it has awsome potential.

So Automata is done. And I'm not sure how I feel about that. It feels...unfinished.

Don't get me wrong; I liked the art and what could have been an excellent story. But it just feels like there really WAS no story and the only reason it was made was for the art and the overall concept, while there was no discernible plot.

I expected better.

There's a plot. It's just not finished in the few strips we had.

[spoiler:tmwl56u1]Clearly, something is reprogramming the automata to commit murder. But we never learn who, what, how or why.[/spoiler:tmwl56u1]

The Automata strip felt a lot like a movie trailer..just a tease for a bigger story.

That's why said it felt unfinished. And he turned from murderous beast to normal for no good reason.

It just seemed rushed and incomplete. And so you know, I caught the Fruity Oaty Bars effect on Carl. I get what was going on & what happened, but it just wasn't done that well other than the art.

I loved it. I can't wait to see what they do with a graphic novel. This could really be a big break for these guys, which is saying something since they are already huge. This material is ripe for a "Dark City"-esque movie treatment.

The PA guys have a hard time sticking with something. They really are worried that too much continuity will push away their readership.

I think they are right though, PA isn't the proper format for this. They either need a different website or to just do the graphic novel thing. I vote for... both. Do it Freakangels style.

Then a movie. :unibrow:
