Baldur's Gate : A New Look

Looks like they will "HD" the older versions of Baldur's Gate... even make them have new content.

A few questions to ask of you my forumites.

1. Have you played these games? If so, what do you remember of them? If not... why?
2. Will you buy this game? Even look at this seriously?
3. How awesome would it be to have BG3?

Personally, I'm happy they are making a new version of the game. The UI is out of date and difficult to play without the "unofficial" patch and widescreen fixes. If the price is reasonable (under $20) I'd be willing to pay for the full game... especially if they make MP decent et fix the "mage macros" when faces enemies which forced you to prep your mages to be "anti-mages" with an assortment of dispel spells.

Why is Atari still fuckign involved?

Ultimately, maybe this will promote a new Baldur's Gate game.... or any other proper D&D game.

We've been long overdue.

Wasn't a fan of the games, but only because at that time I was pretty down on D&D. I hate, have hated, and will always hate the D&D magic system.

I played Baldur's Gate, but my first time was just a few years ago. I'd missed them when they first came out (though I did play Planescape Torment about the time it was first released). I remember a fair bit about them because it wasn't that long ago.

I'm probably not that interested in this game right now because my memories of BG are still pretty fresh. Even if I were, it being tied to Beamdog is a real annoyance.

I am a bit torn. I really dug BG1. I played it through many times. And since I've played it so many times, I don't know if I want to do it again.

Unless there is a significant improvement, count me out. Some new shitty content delivery system (Beamdog) coupled with the fact that I just rebought all the games on GOG puts me far into the they better fucking impress me category.

Yeah, I'll stick with GoG, It's not like the graphics are absolutely horrid. The old sprite games have aged ten times better than most of the 1st and 2nd gen 3d rendered games.

Speaking of which, I think I'll be loading up Planescape: Torment tonight.

I would have to see what they looked like and if there were any differences. But, yeah, I would probably get them again. I enjoyed the crap out of those games.

It looks like regular Baldur's Gate.

Honestly? Telling me they are making it compatible with the iPad doesn't leave me inspired.

No but really, I kinda agree. That kinda dampened the mood. Still, I REALLY liked the BG series.

Not mad, disappointed that once again the odds are, the D&D license or game properties are going to dipshits.

But I'm crossing my fingers it'll have SOME sort of redeeming value.

Baldur's Gate was AD&D right?

yes

It is the last D&D game I understood.

Absolutely loved the Baldur's Gate series and would definitely consider buying these if they turn out nicely.

No, not really. Unless you mean the last one to use AD&D rules.

Correct, I spend 100's of dollars on AD&D 2nd edition, and several of the "Complete" books. There were so many rules and exceptions that it basically became a game of... who ever has the most money wins. Then when 3 came out I was no longer interested in buying their crap. So after that, and the 3rd edition and higher gamed came out I never knew what a decent min/max build was. I never understood dropping over 20 years of rules. Because 1rst and 2nd editions were close enough that two systems could be used at the same time. Then 3 had absolutely nothing in common with the old systems.

The last games to use the AD&D rules as I know it are Icewind Dale and Baldur's Gate 2.

Right, but they are still based on the Baldur's Gate system.

If you're playing D&D to compete against your fellow players (or even more idiotic, the GM) you're doing it wrong.

It was a really bad time to be a player with only a players guide. Because the "complete" books were TSR approved cheating. You always get the player that min/maxes to ridiculous degrees. This one player that I was around for a short time had a "complete" book that had rules for playing Brownies and 4 armed demons. Then that player would wreak havoc on the party, and call it "role playing." The most obnoxious one was the Brownie because he was permanently invisible, and needed a +2 weapon to hit him. In other words invulnerable to a Lvl 1 group. Luckily the GM had enough and let my Cleric take him out with a bless spell to my mace. The 4 armed Demon was easy to take out, the Paladin in the party objected to the demon's presence in the party. So the Demon attacked the Pally and it took the rest of the party to take him down.

Inner party justice has to be meted out once in a while.

That sounds more like kids playing with Ninja Turtle toys than any D&Ding I've ever done but I never played D&D until after I became an adult. Other than the games, my first interaction with P&P RPGs was 3.5 edition.

Also when the 4 armed demon was actually playing for us and not against us, he did 8 attacks around with 4 two handed swords. Yeah, hard to set up a back-stab when you play with a buzz-saw.

The guy was at least 25.

I suppose I just don't understand why the GM didn't take control of this and just tell him he can't play that character.

Oh, you insist on playing that? Ok, you are hit by a meteor, please burn your character sheet.

Here's more info!

http://www.baldursgate.com/index.en.html

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition for Windows contains the following enhancements:

New Adventure: The Black Pits
New Character: Dorn Il-Khan
New Character: Neera the Wild Mage
New Character: Rasaad yn Bashir
A new collection of player character voice sets
Native support for high resolution widescreen displays
Over 400 improvements to the original game
Improved multiplayer support, with connectivity between all platforms.

And all for the low low price of 20 bucks. 20 bucks? Jesus that's a hell of a nostalgia tax.

Funniest part to me? Look at the names of the new characters. Dorn Il-Khan. Neera the Wild Mage. Rasaad yn Bashir. SOMEONE at Beamdog is a fan of Star Trek.

I could see breaking your Ipad trying to play that thing on there.
They're making it for the iPad as well.

I know. I don't think it will play all that well on the iPad.
I wonder if they'll release it for the iPad.
