Kind of a poorly written list, with many entries being trivial or grossly exaggerated.

This one did strike me, though:

For most of their lives, maintaining relations between the U.S. and the rest of the world has been a woman’s job in the State Department.

I think the writers of the list just go through a list of crap that happened 18 years ago and reword it.

This list, and even what it represents, is silly and/or insulting. Joke pictures/texts on Facebook about "you're a child of the '80s if..." can be funny but at least know they're not actually real.
This reads as if they honestly do believe most people of the same year magically think alike and feel alike, yet a year earlier or later and the mindset's different.
"no use for radio"? While I can't speak to the US, in Belgium, listener numbers for student radios have gone up over 500% in the past 5 years, due to internet radio being more accepted and available. Just one out of a million examples... I'm just going to assume this list is meant as comedy as well, otherwise it's just plain horrible.

That aside: exposed bra straps a fashion statement? I'm sure they can be, but most of the time, wut?

Bits, bytes and bauds? I challenge them to find anyone of that age that knows what a "buad" is.
