Berkeley Breathed coming back to Bloom County!!

Dave

Yes, I know this is more "Media" as it's web comics, but I think it's big enough news that it deserves to be in General.

BERKELEY FREAKING BREATHED IS STARTING BLOOM COUNTY BACK UP!!

This is like OMFG level of cool! For those of us who cut our comic teeth on this & Doonesbury, this is phenomenal news. The intelligence and humor of this strip can not be overstated. I fucking love this and everything about it.

May be the only good thing to come out of the Trump presidential campaign. :D

Huh. TIL Berkeley Breathed is a dude. I always assumed he was a woman with that name.

Dave

This, by the way, is from his Facebook page. If/when he does it on a site, I won't just post the picture like that. I want him to get traffic so he keeps doing it!

I am shocked by how young he is. Relatively speaking, for somebody that has not had a really steady gig in 25 years. I know he did Outland and Opus, but those were flashes in the pan.

And it's pronounced "Breathe-Ed."

He also did the artwork for the movie "Secondhand Lions".

posting to watch thread for updates.

I started reading Bloom County before I could even understand the subtleties of the comic. I loved it as a kid, and now when I go back and re-read the collections I love them even more.

I'm excited beyond words. I LOOOOOOVED Outland and Bloom County. I have very few comic strip collections and all of them are Outland, Bloom County or Calvin and Hobbes.

Man, I have this snipped somewhere in one of my collections.

I'm so excited for this! Bloom County (and all it's iterations) have been near and dear to my heart since I learned to read. Even if I didn't always understand the political comments, I could get a big laugh out of it. I'll probably be thumbing through my collection tonight, and take my plush Opus and Bill down from the shelf. They live again!

Man, he is such a good cartoonist. His stuff obliterates everything in the papers going.

I really wish he would get back to drawing Garfield like he used to:
:awesome:

I bet Jim Davis thinks that every night. As he falls asleep on his mattress stuffed with dollar bills.

Okay, random show of hands: how many people Googled "SUDS" and "NUNS" after that?

Well I did, so I can only show you one hand right now.

No, if you Googled it right now, Breathed's Facebook Photo Album would likely be the first hit.

So it looks like he's posting new strips to his FB page daily.

It's a great thing to pop up on the feed first thing in the morning, so glad he's back.

Someone on his Facebook page said "Well, that's perhaps the best way I can think of to determine reach," and showed a graph with a HUMONGOUS spike for that day... the (wossname) graph, same one that Know Your Meme uses...

I like that one because if you woke him up at the end of every decade since the internet became a actual consumer service it would look different. Shit 1998 amazon looks down right paleolithic compared to 2015 amazon.

This one's been my favorite so far, it reminds me of the way he'd always deliver those little punchline jabs in the old strips.

At least that one didn't require a third panel eposition bomb to setup the joke.

So according to this thread I was 3 when this guy stopped, and having no nostalgic connection let me just say I don't get the appeal.

Berkeley Breathed had a habit of explaining political problems in a manner that made sense to me during my formative years. My dad had all of his collections, and I would read and re-read them because I thought the characters were funny. Later, I realized that I had a more solid grasp on issues that were outside of my ken from that time than I thought.

Intelligent writing + good characters + satire = winning combination.

I wonder just how Oliver Wendell Jones has done with the massive Internet Age boom. Probably having to deal with arrogant little script-kiddies...

Nice tip of the hat to Bill Watterson there. Well played.
To which Berkley replied:
