Brutal Legend (demo out tomorrow!)

Just thought I'd give everybody a heads-up for this, but it looks like the demo for Brutal Legend will be up tomorrow (Sept. 17th) at 11 PM on Xbox Live. The only caveat is that you have to have preordered the game through Gamestop (although I think you can do a 'free' pre-order online, and then cancel it after you get the code).

Can't wait for it, I'll post my opinion on it after I get to play it.

Past info for those who might not know:

(NOTE: the 'similar thread' search function worked, but all the threads were from before the move and in the general section. Just thought I'd make a new thread for it in the video game section.)

I pre-order for PS3

GeneralOrder24

I preordered today and am in the process of pulling down the demo as I type this. I'll give you guys my first impressions after I get to try it.

Pre-first impressions are that it looks frelling awesome, seeing that preview vid that Tim Schaeffer did of the first level a couple of months ago. Sounds like the demo is going to be that same bit of game, so I'm anxious to see how the actual play is.

Played the Demo, and it totally rocks! I am even more excited for this game now, I didn't know that was possible!

I was actually more excited by the outro of the demo than the actual gameplay (already saw the gameplay, and the controls were virtually exactly what I expected what they'd be): seeing that crowd of headbangers following him around to 3 Inches of Blood's "Deadly Sinners" was amazing.

Although I also liked
the intro bit where he gets crushed and bleeds into the belt buckle after saving the emo kid, and the dialogue is absolutely hilarious.

GeneralOrder24

Did anyone else catch that in the into cutscene,

When the band guitar guy's up on the ledge, right before he falls, he's doing what appears to be Razputin's victory dance from Psychonauts?

I realize since it's the intro cutscene, so it's not really a spoiler per se, but better safe than sorry.

Gill Kaiser

I've seen the intro video on youtube, but all I can find is the censored version. Granted, the bleeps do kind of make it funnier, but I really want to see the movie with gore enabled. I hear that something worse happens to Kabbage Boy :) Is there any chance that someone could capture the uncensored intro and upload it?

Also, I didn't catch Raz's victory dance the first time, but I did notice that the guitarist in the half-shirt had Raz's voice.

Phil does annoying voice-over... and he's also an complete idiot when it comes to problem solving. Be prepared to shout at the screen if you watch the rest of his stuff.

Gill Kaiser

Thanks. As I suspected, their heads popped off for no reason whatsoever. Perfect.

The voiceover was annoying, but I can always watch Tim Schafer's playthrough if I want clarity.

No Reason whatsoever? I disagree... their minds were BLOWN BY THE POWER OF ROCK!!!

Okay, I have to admit...first time I've ever laughed at a CAD strip.

What the hell is a Brutal Legend?

Ach, what does Fallout 3 GOTY contain? The game with all the mods on it?

As for Brutal Legend, this game went from in the corner of my eyes to a purchase-on-release game after playing through the demo. And as much as I hate to admit it, it's largely because of the graphics, the dialogue... the overall style of the game, not because of the gameplay.

Does that make me a graphics whore? :(

Broken Steel
The Pitt
Mothership Zeta

That's why I'm buying it. The animations and dialogue are dripping with personality. Metal's okay and all, and the gameplay seems good enough to keep me playing, but I'm mostly in it to hear Schafer's jokes and explore that insane and imaginative landscape.

That's pretty one of the reasons why this game is awesome. The backdrop's incredible, it's a love-letter to metal fans (no doubt, as Schafer's a metal fan), but the game's got Schafer's signature hilarity and good gameplay to go with it.

I personally loved "The Druid Plow", and I have my first-ever video game crush on Ophelia.

Also, when did CAD start being funny?

I know, right? And the mini in rvd's sig, too, what the hell he made fun of himself!

Also, I knew I wanted this game after seeing the concept art (it's fucking gorgeous), but the dialogue in the demo sold me full-on. It's witty as hell and just plain hilarious. Eddie's banter as you fight/travel is great and Jack Black delivers it really well.

I suppose I'd best put a disclaimer in my signature.

Almost two and a half years.

That's how long I've been waiting for Brutal Legend, and--while there's other games with more rabid fanbases (*coughStarcraftcough*)--it's the only game I've ever intently followed the development on. From its first 'official' exposure being the cover of Game Informer back in October 2007, through the drought of information, to the news it was cancelled in July 2008, til EA (of all people) picked it up in December, and--finally--when Activision sued to try and stop its release.

Activision became the bad guys, EA the good (once more, who'da thunk it?), and the whole point of this post: tonight, at the stroke of midnight, I will have Brutal Legend in my hands and contribute to the sales numbers a Tim Schaffer game deserves.

See you guys tomorrow!

Gill Kaiser

That's great for you, but spare a thought for those of us in the UK, where for some masturbatory reason all retailers wait to release games on Fridays, resulting in three day delays for every game release.

Played a little tonight, early day tomorrow so only got an hour or so (heading to the Metal Queen's Lair). Loving it so far, the Lionwhyte statues in the mines had me cracking up.

What genre is the gameplay? I'd assumed platformer but some of the reviews I've read are saying it's some sort of RTS? If it's an RTS with heavy metal band themes, count me out, no matter how much I liked Psychonauts.

The game very much tries to be genre transcendant, somewhat like Bayou Billy, only not shitty. There are generic beat-em up levels, driving levels, and RTS levels (so far.)

The RTS levels have practically ZERO micromanagment, and as far as I've played, have been "build as many units as you can, take a resource pit, repeat" To control units, you basically tell them "follow me" and then "attack that" or "guard here" I've put about zero strategy in, and having played only two so far, have had no trouble.

Solid game so far. I'm enjoying it, but I wouldn't say it's game of the year material.

---------- Post added at 08:24 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:14 AM ----------

Actually, scratch that. After reviewing what has come out already this year, this would probably wind up second place for my GOTY behind Arkham Asylum. I didn't realize how bland this year's releases have been so far. Not saying there weren't decent games, just nothing that's stood out much.

Of course, the years not over yet...

ODST Blows.

I have to admit...this is the first game ad that has caught my eye in years. It looks like such an awesome idea. I really wish I had a PS3. Stupid kids with their stupid Wii.

RealBigNuke

Three or so hours in, and it's everything I'd hoped it would be. Game play is okay, nothing incredible, and the RTS stuff is very simple and not especially great beyond the joke.

However, the writing, animation, art, and general awesomeness are all top notch.

#34

SpecialKO

SpecialKO

The RTS actually gets much harder as bad guys get much tougher in the story campaign.

I haven't done multi-player yet, but I assume the different faction armies are more balanced there.

(POSSIBLE SPOILERS!!!)

I've put about four or five hours into it (school/midterms this week), but I've absolutely loved it. Gameplay's solid; nothing spectacular, but it's got that Schafer charm--even though you do the same 'Ambush the guys!' mission half a dozen times, it doesn't get old because of the humor and the voicework.

The game simultaneously mocks and reveres heavy metal, and the world breathes. You can find enemies wandering around; animals attacking and killing each other; the world feels integrated and 'natural', even when green forest suddenly gives way to desert. Design's top-notch, same with the humor, although I would've expected nothing less from Tim Schafer.

The RTS sections are pretty hectic, but in a good way. I'm not a steady RTS player (I enjoy them, just I don't game a lot on my computer), so it's taking me some time to break into them, but you can still join the fray (one of my favorite things to do is drop in the middle of a crowd, bust out the Facemelter, and watch as Lionwhyte's army claws at their liquefied faces). It's a good balance of the two, although I was slightly annoyed by the fact that any time I inadvertently got close to Lionwhyte during the assault I was lightning'd to death before I could get away.

The bonuses are awesome, too. I love the 'heavy metal vistas' you can look through, the Bound Serpents to upgrade your health/attack, and--perhaps most awesomely--the Buried Metal you can find to fill out the soundtrack (I LOVE how they even explain why you have a soundtrack in the Age of Metal).

I waited two and a half years for this game, and it's everything I wanted. Damn good job, Schafer, and it's good to see you finally get the marketing push your games deserve.

I hear the color palette is awesome, and intentionally not that ubiquitous brown and grey. And by "I hear", I mean "read on Wikipedia".

I pre-ordered it and am supposed to pick it up tomorrow (thursday). At least I hope that I will be able to pick it up tomorrow, you're right that the game is officially released on friday in Europe.

Now I'm a little anxious. I gave my friend's number when I pre-ordered (couldn't remember mine) so it was he wo recieved the phone call about picking it up tomorrow.
