Bulletproof character types

Which characters in film or TV just seem to be indestructible? Entire groups of Space Marines, big game hunters, or armored knights are effortlessly killed while these particular types survive unscathed. I've noticed this trend is especially true in American cinema. Why do these types of characters always miss their appointment with the evolutionary cutting board? And are there any other types I can add to this list?

The Single Mom - She raises her kid(s) by herself because her drunken, abusive husband left them. Usually develops a relationship with the male protagonist or supporting character.

The Annoying Kid - The typical screaming munchkin who won't shut up for five minutes (ex. Dakota Fanning in War of the Worlds). Often the offspring of the single mom and eventually regards the male protagonist as a father figure.

The Dog - Think about the golden retriever from Independence Day. Need I say more?

There must be some type of teenage girl to add to that list. There was one awful movie I saw, on a sinking ship is all I remember about the plot, where the good guys had bad guys have been trading gunshots for half the movie. Trained professionals have been firing and missing over and over again. Finally it's down the lead bad guy, and all the guns have been knocked out of hand, and the scared teenage girl picks up a pistol, aims at the big bad and shoots him square in the forehead! One shot, dead. Probably the last bullet in the gun, too.

Babies are generally indestructible. Also Comic relief characters, although I must say the only part of the miserable Dungeons and Dragons movie I actually enjoyed was when the hugely annoying comic relief character got unexpectedly and horribly killed.

I've also noticed that Japanese and most European cinema don't usually mind killing off a kid. It seems to be an American phenomenon. I wonder why.

I noticed this as well in Dante's Peak, but they killed the dog in Jurassic Park: The Lost World.

I forgot about Alien 3 as well. And that rottweiler died a pretty horrible death, too.

We got new dogs a week after seeing this movie and due to that scene and my crying like a baby I demanded we name one of them Sam.

Anyway, to get on topic, you can generally expect the main character of a slasher movie to survive. Also, if the killer does not the name/idea of them will.
