A father whose 3 year old got kidney stones due to the malamine tainted milk decided to start a support group (online forum, and informal restaurant meeting) for parents who were affected by this, protested outside the manufacturing plant and the courthouse, and gave media interviews in a public place got a 2.5 year sentence for "inciting social disorder".

China Punishes Food Safety Activist

In my head:
Company: Let's make more money by poisoning small children!
Public: D:
China: Bad company! Three of you get death, several life sentences, and many others put in prison.
China: We are a bastion of food safety!
Father: I started a support group - if anyone was hurt by this, let's chat about it
Father: I'm protesting at the courthouse!
Father: I'm protesting at the manufacturing plant!
Father: I'm talking to television reporters!
China: No! We fixed the problem, there are no more food safety problems in china at all, and we're going to make sure you don't see your son's 4th and 5th birthdays.

Welcome to the new China, same as the old China.

I am not surprise.

The problem is that a non government person is organizing and passing out info. They don't know what kind of info, he could also be passing pro democracy stuff too!!! ;)

To be fair to China, at least they actually DID something about the people who passed out the tainted milk. Here in the US the companies wouldn't have had to admit liability, even while they quietly performed a recall, and even if the did get taken to court, the victims would be lucky to see more than a few thousand a piece from the settlement because their lawyers would have taken a huge portion of it as their fee. It would be a rarity if anyone did jail time and even if an exec did get jail time, he'd be doing it at Club Fed.

That being said, yes... China really needs to lighten up and accept that some people are going to dissent. In the age of cellphone cameras, wireless internet, and the 24-hour news cycle, they just can't get away with making people "disappear" like this anymore.

Each of them has more money than China.

Also, this topic does not surprise me; I see info on this every week that didn't make it to the news because it happens so much. Someone's land and home is leveled by the government, businesses are taken over by the government, someone was fired for no reason, possibly due to the government... Jailed, beaten, run away to the U.S., deported again within 5 years, jailed upon return to China (unless they lied about the whole thing). Rinse, repeat.
