I HATE it when the news media focus more on the group rather than the issue. I wonder why even state Muslim Chinese in the first place?

Summary: 11 people died and hundreds are ill from vinegar poison that was stored in toxic anti-freeze container. The story didn't cover if this was sold as is or the people who bought it decides to reuse plastic container to store vinegar. To me that is important to know cause this could be a human error instead of an "attack on the people"

Investigators suspect the victims consumed vinegar that was put in two plastic barrels that had previously been used to store toxic antifreeze, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
Since most people don't store vinegar in barrels, I'm inclined to believe it was stored there before moving into whatever it was sold in.

Also because they were killed at a Ramadan meal, we could assume they're Muslims but there's nothing wrong with explaining that they are it merely adds context to the story (answering the question of who, Chinese Muslims, and when, at a Ramadan meal). The bulk of the article focuses on: the poisoning and China's food safety record. In no way would I say this is a case of the media focusing on the group over the event.

I dunno. When I read it, it sounded like it was a intended target instead of just saying that people are being killed from toxic vinegar that was improperly stored in barrels that was used for anti-freeze.

I'm always staggered when a Nation that is famous for trying to control lives and thoughts... just does not have or enforce food safety measures.

Xinjiang is probably the poorest least educated province in China. This gathering of people was a family affair. I don't know about you, but the FDA doesn't regulate my aunts Turkey dinner.

although maybe they should
Heh. My grandparent (I got one left) is an AWESOME cook. Luckily She lives in Taipei and food is "safer" there :) (but the spices might kill ya! which I love it!)

Bah, my current beef with Taiwan is the DEHP scandal. I offered a bottled tea to a doctor while I was at the hospital a few weeks ago and he wouldn't touch it since the scandal in Taiwan gave some mainland manufacturers the bright idea (OF COURSE!) to save some money (OF COURSE!) and use the stuff themselves (OF COURSE!). Now my girlfriend has issues if I go for a bottle of my favorite tea, saying that
I'm going to kill myself(....OF COURSE!).... (despite it being Suntory brand, which is Japanese).

*shakes angry fist*.

That's ok. I still have coke zero and American companies would never add any harmful chemicals to my drink that I might regret at some point in the future. I can sure rest assured in that. God bless America.

It's like I can't win. Back to water forever I guess. Of course next thing I'll find out is that Nongfu spring water was discovered to be half rat piss, knowing my luck.

Yea. Even in Taiwan, my dad told me NOT to drink tap water (unlike in the U.S.) so yea. It is a hit or miss.

It's kind of funny, because I was always kind of laid back. I ate at the country restaurants, ate the street food...whatever. When I came down to Shanghai, my girlfriend loaded me with story upon story about poison-this and gutter-oil that and whatever. Then her father said much of the same thing until I finally said to my girlfriend that I'm starting to get the impression that China is one giant poison pot and I'm surprised it hasn't already dissolved itself in it's own corrosive juices, to which she said, "Why do you think it's so important to make money? So you don't HAVE to eat at the cheap restaurants and buy the cheap drinks."

Makes enough sense but it kind of readjusted my carefree attitude towards my dining habits here. Actually it made me a bit depressed. Those little places can be a lot of FUN.

If it's really spring water, then yea it's probably got piss in it. Don't worry though, ~90% of bottle water comes from a municipal source (at least in America).
