I picked up both Ender's game and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I haven't read either of them yet so they will both be new to me. But the problem is I can't decide which one to read first. At first i thought I would read THGTTG first since it is shorter but I am torn cause I have heard such good things about both. So I decided to let you all decide which book I shall read next. :)

Of the two options you have, Enders Game, then while reading it get the rest of the HHGTTG series.

You know, this is really bizarre--I got both of those books from one friend on my 16th birthday.

In the end, I say Ender's Game is a more worthwhile read, though you won't regret HHGTTG--that stuff be hilarious.

The hitchhiker's is something that you'll either love, or hate.

Or he can get the rest of the 5 novels in the Ender's series.

And not have a bastard sequel written by someone else, ala THHG. :(

Meh. I read up to the third book, and neither of the sequels was as good as the first. In fact I didn't enjoy the third much at all.

I did, however, enjoy all 5 of the H2G2 series. I haven't read "And Another Thing..." or "The Salmon of Doubt"

Ender's Game is the better book, I think. Also, there's sort of a twist that could be spoiled for you the longer you go without reading it.

I highly recommend reading Ender's Game first.

And when you do read Hitchhiker's, the more you've been exposed to it, the less funny it's going to be. I went into the first book having already seen the movie and listened to the radio show, so a lot of the first book's humor had already been well-trodden for me.

Well I have purposefully avoided the movie for HGTTG and I haven't listened to the radio show of it either so it would be fresh to me. I do plan on more than likely picking up the sequels to both books. Now I have had some spoilers given to me or Ender's Game by a friend who can't seem to not spout out stuff that blows chunks out of a story. Now whether what he told me is a huge spoiler I do not know but I will be reading both I am just trying to decide on the order. I don't imagine it will take me too long to read either of them. I was hoping for some real decisive decision from you all but at least as of now the poll is just about split. Well I will give it till tomorrow night and than I will make my decision.

Okay, just so you know: Even knowing the twist in Ender's Game, it's still a good read. The book doesn't hinge on the twist. I really liked the sequels to the book too; er, not the direct sequels, I haven't read those. I mean the books about a secondary character from Ender's Game.


Umm, my advice for which book to read comes down to this: If you're looking for humor, read Hitchhiker's; if you want a more character driven book, read Ender.

I have not read either (ok, read a bit of the beginning of both, but reading on the pc is annoying), so i can't much help... but i recall ender being shorter pagewise...

You younger guys that pick up and read H2G2, do you find the humor dated? I was a fan of British TV from the era that Adams wrote the books. I even saw a few episodes on PBS. I did not get the books until 1991 or so, and even then just 13 years later it just seemed a little tired. But I had a point of reference of living through those times, and still caught the jokes.

So what were your impressions of the humor found in the book.

I read the first book for the first time 2 years ago. Thought it was Hilariously absurd.

Well it looks like the votes for HGTTG wins this poll. So I guess I will be reading that one first. But I will definitely be reading Ender's Game as soon as I finish HGTTG. And if both series are as good as I hear I can easily see myself buying the sequels to both of them but I will decide that after I finish reading them both :)

Ender's Game is a better book/series. HHGTTG is hit and miss. Not a big fan, personally.

Since you haven't seen the movie or listened to the radio show, I think you'll enjoy the first HHGTTG book just fine.

The series of HHGTTG is better than the Ender series. Ender's Game is really one book, while the books that follow are something very different and nowhere near as good.

I just finished HHGTTG and will be starting Ender's Game. As far as HHGTTG goes I enjoyed it very much and will be looking forward to reading the sequels later on.

I dunno. I liked Hitchhiker's guide, LOVED restaurant at the end of the universe, and just couldn't get through Life, the Universe and Everything. It kinda got too weird at that point, and I heard it only gets worse.
If you want a big series, I'd go with Ender.

yeah, but the series following Ender's Game is really sub-par to the original.

Might be different tastes; Life, Universe, Everything was my favorite of the HHGTTG books.

Well I just finished Ender's Game the other day. I went and picked up Ender's Shadow to read next. As far as EG and HGTG I liked both but I think I like Ender's game a little more. HGTG was a funny and bizarre read and I look forward to reading the rest of the series but I think I liked Ender's Game a bit more.

I think I preferred that Ender's Shadow line of squels to the Hitchhiker's series.

However, Ender's Shadow and its sequels aren't really the sequel to Ender's Game. There's a book or two that are actually about Ender. Speaker in Dreams, I think the first one was called. I haven't read it/them, though. Just the Ender's Shadow series.

There's two lines of sequels, the Speaker for the Dead series, and the Shadow series. Speaker for the Dead is the sub-par one I mentioned, a trilogy that isn't really very good.

The Shadow series is the one centering on Bean, and Ender's Shadow is the only one of those I would recommend at all. I didn't finish that series, but it wasn't shaping up to be much better than Speaker.

I'm not too into Orson Scott Card--Ender's Game is a phenomenal book that he wrote, but for me, the quality stops there.
