Anyone else crapping blood in anticipation of this one?

one of my bestfriend is. He is a Civ-nut and played EVERY single one of them. I figure he'll disappear for about 2-3 months (at least) before we see him at our gaming sessions.

Be gone for 2-3 months, and still won't have finished a game...

:)

Civ V will keep me awake many a night. Even if it's just small improvements it would still be worth wasting your time on, but maybe they'll actually make politics matter in this game.

Eh, I got over my hemorrhoids a few months ago.

...what?

I'm...iffy about it. I loved Civ IV, but...I don't know. I think what bothers me is that the control scheme is changing significanly to the octagon spaces, like Numbanga (sp?) and other games like that. Those are games I never took a liking to.

Still, if there's a demo, then I'll at least give it a try. And see what reviews say. I'm in no rush to play it.

I will definitely give it a try, I've played all the games so far (including Colonization) and liked them all. I´m a bit worried about the changes to the gameplay but hopefully it will be ok, I remember playing Fantasy General which had the "one unite per tile" rule and I really liked that game. I'll admit though that I'm very often in the camp that just wants the same game the played last time only with better graphics and a few extra units and tech :)

Wait what? There will be a 1 unit per tile rule? That's....hrm. Maybe with more possibilities to make armies that could work...I dunno though.

I've never played a Civilization game.

I assume I should pick up Civ IV from Steam?

This is what I came to ask. What would Civ IV and/or Civ V be like for a Civ virgin?

I think the idea that they are going for is that each unit you have should be more valuable, that is, each unit costs more and will upgrade more over time thus leading to smaller armies than in previous games. The designers also want terrain to have a bigger impact and one way to do that is to only allow one unit per tile which can lead to serious choke points forming on the map. Archer units and such are also supposed to be able to back up melee units.

I'll give it a shot, played civ III a lot... but I prefer Europa Universalis.

Knowing that you like Dwarf Fortress, you would absolutely fucking love Civilization

Civ IV is as good a place as any in the franchise to start playing. I had never played any of the previous, but Civ IV blew me away when I got it. You can get good deals on it now as well. I say give it a try.

I hope Civ 5 sucks. There, I said it.

I hope Civ 5 sucks like a hoover powered by an inexplicably-synthesized radioactive isotope discovered by Iron Man's dad.

Because otherwise, I will never turn my computer off. When it comes to Civ games, I have no self-control.

Simple: listening to the soothing, hypnotic voice of Leonard Nemoy while TRYING TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!!

The whole point is to win and conquer the world :) now if you don't know what you are doing (like me) it is back to research, research, research :)

Nah, I got it down pat now. I just never gave it a chance when I bought it back in December. The turn-based part was a real turn off because I assumed it would be a game like Command and Conquer. I see now that it's better.
