Convince me to get EVE Online

So, I know next to nothing about this game. Amy's video has my interest more than a little piqued. Can anyone explain the basic concept behind it, and is it something that, were I to noobishly break in now, would I get teh raeped?

tl;dr, convince me to buy EVE online

If you like a game that challenges you, then you would like EvE.

Nothing is handed to you. You have to earn it. And not by grinding out missions our quests or raiding dungeons, but by being smarter than other players. Don't expect to be able to walk in and kick ass, but that's not because your character isn't strong enough, its because you aren't. Older players often create alts to show this feature off

PvP - There are numerous accounts of Pirates racking up massive amounts of kills on trial accounts. I was searching for a link and I couldn't find one.

Trading - People do a game where they start with 5k isk (almost nothing) and see how fast they can increase it. Current record is 2 bil in a month I believe. I have no idea how that was done. I am nowhere near that good myself. http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1308687

PvE - Well you can pve from day one so....

Anyways the point is that its a truly player driven world. I could never agree with the whole "I already have a job" concept, but I will warn that the game is not all excitement all the time. Actually it can be (depending on how you play) but a lot of times you are working towards the next big crazy thing.

Here's a decent description

Edit: Also:

1 server
free updates/expansions
21 day free trial (any of the hal corp members can set you up with the extended trial)
5$ client
you can pay for your subscription with in game money.....

this is another video. You have to have a little more understanding of some of the major player run alliances at the time this happened, but, I dunno I think this is fucking awesome that someone can make a video like this about something entirely done by players

And another one that is awesomesauce but you probably can't appreciate it since you don't know the backstory

Awesome Goonswarm recruitment video

And one of the best videos that are like a historical retrospective of a major war

Like Necronic said, it's a compelling game that challenges you to make something for yourself in it. It can be intimidating at first, but the new tutorial system really helps to ease the learning curve. I tried getting into EvE a couple years ago by myself and hated it. The tutorials sucked and I had no idea what I was doing. Trying it out just a few months ago with the new tutorials and a group of great people from the forum has made it a very enjoyable experience. I'm loving it. Now's a great time to give it a try because the Halforums corp is gearing up to build our own space station and carve a niche out for ourselves and we can use all the pilots we can get.

One thing about EvE is that its pretty impossible to solo it. Playing and learning on your own is very difficult and not very rewarding. However you have a huge leg up in that there is already a Halforums corp up and running. So that's cool.

Also, read this story. It's fucking awesome (its what made me start playing)

Eve online isnt WoW. There is no easy mode. Its like Civilization 4, on crack, with real humans enemies and allies. You can do anything, conquer anyone, but you have to treat it like you might a real military career, because your corpmates are humans, no AI. There's reward, but also, real risk, which makes the rewards that much more exciting. Betrayal, scandal, revenge, all that's there, but because it's a sandbox and vastly complex, it doesn't hold your hand. It's not for everyone. But if you can hack it, it just might be your thing

I only had time to play it a few days but I loved it. It was tough, very steep learning curve (which wasn't helped by my intoxication at the time) but I could see from the start why I would have had a lot of fun with it. I hope that when I get these few projects that I've got going out of the way then I might settle into a time when I can play it again. However, it's likely going to be some time before I do but I'm sure the game will still be there.

From what everyone's been telling me, I'm pretty much getting sold on it... would it be better to pick up the boxed set, or just D-L it? Also, is there any hardware that would be good to pick up? My home system meets their recommended system reqs; I was thinking something along the lines of a headset.

dont tell us your username,
pick a name for your pilot :)
tell us THAT
lol

I'm already ON shift. *grins*

I started to D-L before I came on, but the time I allotted myself wasn't going to be enough. It said a 20-minute D-L, so I might go home for lunch and set it up.

hey thread necromancer. Instead of derailing my forumites art thread, why dont you go get your trial started too?

yes, that was a gauntlet :)

Because as much fun as that sounds, I'm actually only sitting in front of this computer because I've working on a shit ton of coding. Just check the forums once in a while to keep my brain from going numb from staring at code.

as i am getting ready for bed. I HATE you. lol are you on tomorrow? We're having a corporation event

I'm sure that EvE online is great if you have time to get into it, but I don't even have time to play WoW, which is the popcorn of MMOs.

They say Eve is a sandbox, meaning you could stay in your corner and build your perfect little pile of sand, when and as much as you want. When you feel comfortable you could move on to something bigger, or just keep growing that pile.

OR you could go for big, and build the greatest sand castle ever seen in the middle of that sandbox. Everyone will have heard your name, many would want a look at your castle, many would try to ram it or take it over... which is were the laser- hybrid- artillery- missile guns come in, you get the point.

You could also do anything in between, anything you can think of.

Amy, I actually spotted you on there... right before you logged. *grins* Look for Lloyd Karron. I will try and log on again tomorrow before work, and perhaps after, as well.

This is not true. Some ships are very much better than others (Dramiels, Cynabals, I'm looking at you), and you can't fly those starting on day 1, or even day 60. In addition, the easiest ways to make money is grinding missions or ratting.

Edit: That said, EVE is both the best and worst game I've ever played.

True, a frigate will never take out a battleship, but you would be surprised what a frigate can take out. I've popped multiple cruisers in a rifter, and I have read stories of people who have taken a Punisher/Rifter out and racked up hundreds of kills.

Oh, no, I was merely wondering why noone was playing. I'm not going to kill anyone doing missions or mining. If I wanted to do that, I would have done it in the corp when you werent suspecting it :p. I'm just wondering why the people who do want to pvp, havent made a group and tried to go after me. I'd do a 10v1 fight, it would be fun. Though, if you guys are afraid of me, being alone, what business do you guys have in trying to go to low sec? Hell, I'm not even online that much, hopefully you guys have me on your friends list so you know when I log on.

Heh, ohwell, back to my WoW grind :D

I was in Los Angeles this weekend, so there's that. Even then, I've got better things to do than worry about going after you.

, if you guys are afraid of me
You flatter yourself. Real world commitments > This forum > EVE > a billion other things > you.

I have no grudge against you. You made your decision, which I felt was the wrong choice, but we all sleep in the beds we make. That said, I'll not be bothered to adjust my life/play style to accomodate your decision. You can call that "being afraid of you" but I see it as my time is too precious to lend you anymore. No threat, no insult, just a simple fact. Have fun in wow.

Yeah, no love lost or nothin, we've just been kind of busy this weekend (plus I left my monitor cables at work.) Played my first game of 40k in like 5 years on saturday. Then got super hammered. I did you you for a second on Sunday though.
