Dan Harmon, creator of Community reacts to being fired

I was telling someone that Dan Harmon wouldn't be back for season 4 and she was insistent that it didn't make sense for there to be a season 4 anyway because the show was wrapped up at the end of season 3.

She thinks that everything was tied off and that was their final year at community college. But that's not at all how I see the end of that episode.
As far as I could tell they still have a year left.

Some things pulled together and some issues were resolved but it was still suggesting another season.

You're both right. They wrote and shot that episode before a 4th season was confirmed, (remember when they were on that hiatus?) So they wrote it in a way that would be a somewhat satisfactory ending incase the show had to end there, but still left things open for a 4th season if that happened. Like when Futurama "ended" with "The Devil's Hands are Idle Play Things", and then "ended" again with "Into the Green Yonder".
I think for a lot of die hard fans, season 3 of Community is going to be viewed as the "true" ending, in the same way that Scrubs ended with season 8, and we pretend that season 9 (later subtitled because fan reaction was so insistent) doesn't exist.

I actually thought the last season of Scrubs was better than the 2 or 3 the preceeded it. I liked the new med students and wish it would have just fully spun off onto its own thing.

Also, another example of a show with the false ending because of the unknown fate of the show was Buffy The Vampire Slayer. As much as I love some of the episodes in season seven, season 6's finale would have been the perfect ending for the show. Miles better than the crapfest that was the actual series finale (screw you for killing off Anya with no fanfare, Joss *nerdrage* ).

Anya was important? :trolol:

And at least Season 7 was decent. As cool as the Season 8 comics were at times, you really saw that Joss had NO idea scale and just went crazy. Just the crap with Dawn alone... Season 9 is looking much more low-key though.

As much as I love season six and seven it could have easily been finished at the end of season five and I would have felt satisfied with it.

That was actually their original intention. The network they were originally on were cancelling the show, so that was going to be the ending. But then they were picked up by another network and it was all like, "Game on! Game on!"
