[Brazelton] David Lynch

I just realized...I've never seen ANY of David Lynch's work. Not out of disinterest or thinking any of it was good or bad. I just never got around to it.

My condolences to all his fans mourning him today.

My freshman year of college, our teacher had us watch Eraserhead in class, not only as part of our film history, but "to see what living in Philadelphia does to you". I didn't fully understand it then, but after living there 4 years, I got it.

I wouldn't say he was my favorite directors, but his movies and shows definitely shaped some of the pop culture of our lifetime. I still say he made some of the best Dune visuals.

His oeuvre was not really my thing. I did not enjoy Dune. I did not enjoy Mulholland Drive. When I was in graduate school, a fellow grad student adored Lynch. I never got him and I am, I think, too pedestrian to ever do so. He no doubt paved his own way through television and film and for that I respect him. It is not an easy business to be as independent of a creative mind as David Lynch.

Yeah, Lynch could be an acquired taste. He is definitely considered art house but I think he was even weird for that crowd. His influence can be seen in a lot other media though. Twin Peaks kicked off a series of weird television shows and I believe the makers of Alan Wake site him as an influence in their style.

I loved Elephant Man and when I was in college Blue Velvet was by favorite film. I also gave up on Dune. I kinda liked Mulholland Drive.

I love that Mel Brooks gave him a career by producing him for Elephant Man. But he knew not to put his name on it. It just lists his production company.

Max Payne is full of twin peaks references, Sam Lake is a fan.
