Dear Dave - getting drunk

#1

Dear Dave

I just started drinking recently, I have started on strawberry daiquiri's at Applebee's (about an oz of rum). I found out the hard way earlier this week that 2 WILL get me drunk though it has a longer lingering effect. In hoping to avoid hangovers and puking, but what sorts of fun drinks are out there? I know body mass matters in this, so I'm 5'11'' and 240lbs.

Dear TNG,

If you just started really the only way to not get a hangover is to (1) not get drunk or (2) not drink at all. If you must, just think of all the fun stories you'll have that start with "oh, man! I was SOOOOO wasted!!"

I meant, what types of drinks can I slowly work my way up to without getting too overloaded and spoiling the fun?

TNG, I will defer this question to someone who drinks more.

Anyone?

TNG, I'm a hilarous lightweight with alcohol. If you'll have a glass of water every other drink you will stay soberish longer and feel a lot better the next day. It's simple and obvious, but it works for me.

Oh, and shots are the enemy. Man, I'm going to pay for tonight tomorrow.

Stay hydrated, don't drink on an empty stomach... can't think of anything else. I've never had a hangover worthy of notice, but I've never drunk beyond not being able to walk much so I'm not an expert.

Like Denbrought has said; start hydrated, and preferably with some food in your stomach. Mixed drinks will help you ease into the drunkness, and stick to drinks that you enjoy.

Don't drink swill just to get yourself drunk, bad idea. Having a juice or water in between drinks also reduces the chance of a hangover. I also strongly recommend you have a Gatorade or Powerade before sleeping, the electrolytes and water will keep you well hydrated as your body breaks down the alcohol while you rest.

Do all this, and you WILL wake up feeling tired, maybe a little fatigued. But at least you won't feel sick to your stomach.

If you want to find out what drinks are out there, just tell the bartender what type of drink you're in the mood for. It could be a specific fruit, a certain soda, whatever. If they are any good they will be able to find something for you. Make sure to let them know you don't want them to make it very strong, and you don't want shots.

Stay away from energy drink based drinks. They mask some of the effects of drunkenness, so it can hit you like a kick to the nuts if you aren't careful.

Mikes Hard drinks are pretty good. They come in just about every flavor (lemonade, berry, pomegranate, strawberry, etc) and come in a bottle so you don't have to worry about getting a drink that's too strong for your tastes.

As others have said, have a glass of water in between drinks if your having more than one.

Best thing you can do is know your limit and stick to it though.

What I always do is drink a lot before going to bed, and also try not to be too drunk at that point.

If at a bar, make sure to start on beer first if you're doing beer, and then switch to liquor drinks. Don't switch from liquor to beer or back and forth unless you want to get wasted. Don't ever lower the proof of your drinks. It's easy to remember - start with beer, then go to wine, go on with whisky and finish with absinthe - but never the other way around. And even in this case try not to mix more than three types of drinks during the evening. In any case don't wash down your spirits with beer or wine - it's the fastest way to puke city the next day Learn how you react to different spirits. Start with basic drinks - beer, wine, whisky and vodka, watch your mood and health after every one of them. Then go to more exotic ones, and don't be afraid to experiment - you need to know your own body! Remember don't listen to anyone else they will also be drunk and are not to be trusted. If somebody tells you that a particular cocktail will make you feel happy, don't believe them until you have tested it in good conditions. Alcohol is an extremely individual experience. One of the reasons for this is its influence on your circulation

order mixed fruity drinks. if you're mixing yourself, try rum and coke, or irish cream and chocolate, or insert liquor here + any other kind of soda or juice, heavy on the soda/juice. Fruity margaritas are good, wine coolers are light, wine is good, but the gang is right, eat good food that's not spicy high in fat (careful with what types of greasy food you eat , then drink, then water then drink then water etc. For the first few months, no more than 6 drinks per day.

Oh, it's not that bad, and besides you'll only wind up tasting a part of it anyway...

Stay away from shots and you should be okay. After a few drinking sessions if you just stick with beer or other types of drinks you'll start to be able to gauge how many drinks will get you how drunk and then from there how drunkyou can get and still feel okay the next morning (which can vary extremely from person to person). That might take some trial and error. But especially for the novice drinker, shots will sneak up on you and they will be a one way ticket to puke town.

Keep ordering pitcher after pitcher and finish them yourself.

Stick to a beer you like, and nurse them for a long time. The good thing about beer vs. a mixed drink is that a bartender looking for a tip won't F'ck up your plans by putting too much in your drink.

When you imbibe too much, drink a glass of water before heading to bed, and drink a big glass of water or Gatorade first thing in the morning.
