Anyone know of any freeware that would be good for this? Since the loss of my ipod, I am currently forced to use a p.o.s. mp3 player that makes it a pain to move forward and back on individual tracks, and some of the audio books and stadups I have are put into huge files with hours upon hours of length.

I want to chop them down to smaller files for easier use. Anyone know a good programs for it?

I've been trying to figure out how to change bit rate and such with it to get a smaller file size. I go through all the steps that I've found through tutorials, and somehow I keep ending up with a file that's the same size, or larger.

Some 'editors' don't really edit the audio. They just change the start/end points of the existing audio so that you only hear the part you want without actually lopping off the unwanted bits.

All else being equal, there's no way you'll get a smaller file without recompressing the original file. There are plenty of utilities for recompression out there, but keep in mind your audio quality will suffer greatly.
