Did LA Noire solve Uncanny Valley??

Holy crap, I saw these commercials, and I did a double take. I haven't played the game, but the graphics seem to come incredibly close to solving the Uncanny Valley problem. I thought it might just be my slipping standards, but I happened across a posting on Google's recommended items that said the realism is what costs an entire Blu-Ray disc or 3 Xbox 360 discs!

I don't know if I'd call it solved, but it comes incredibly close to circumventing it. The technology they're using for facial animation is really amazing, and is what first made me take notice of the game.

I find LA Noire's graphics to be incredibly creepy looking, more-so than many other games. Still stuck in the Uncanny Valley for me.

I'm impressed, but it's not solved by any stretch. But yeah, the range of emotions displayed, they way you can see someone swallow nervously, or blink in surprise in a more natural way than previous games... I'm impressed.

This game cannot come soon enough.

There's a vid out there that explains how they had to invent new techniques of MoCap to do the game. Hang on, I'll see if I can find it...

Here's the article as it appeared on Engadget back in Dec '10 (you can click through to the Gizmodo article if you dare brave the site).

Coming out on Tuesday....

As i recall the face and the rest of the head being pasted together made for even more uncanniness...

But watching some newer vids it looks like they included even the neck in the motion capture and it looks fine.

Of course i never actually had a problem with the Uncanny Valley beyond actual bad movement animations which simply made me question the quality of the game...

Thanks for that. I was starting to think that motion capture had run its course. Especially after the flop of Mars needs Moms.

I didn't complete my original thought, but what really got me was that from across the room on my little 19" playroom tv, I thought it was a real actor. The only thing that gave it away at that resolution was the weird light fringe around the edge of the characters, which I'm guessing was a stylistic choice to make them pop from the dark backgrounds.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I want this technology used to make heavy rain 2.

it's impressive and creepy-looking. Faces look real but the bodies don't (and even the edges of head). I'm debating getting this game, mostly because Rockstar is very hit-or-miss for me. I think I'll wait to read some reviews.

For me, it's more of the fact that I have still a decent backlog of games to beat including Red Dead Redemption, Force Unleashed II, Dead Rising II, Dragon Age and Enslaved. And that's not even counting my Steam backlog.

Well that's because the graphics are pretty outdated otherwise.

And here's a review: http://www.gametrailers.com/video/review-hd-l-a-noire/713930

I only have a PS2 and N64. Both of my best PCs have only 2GB RAM and run in the 1.4GHz range. My biggest HDDs are 320-500GB. No graphics newer than NVIDIA 6xxx/7xxx (DX9.0c) and ATI X8xx (DX9.0b). Nothing in my house has HDMI, Blu-Ray, nor even component video.

I so want to play Portal (the original).

I got the money since I didn't buy Portal 2 yet, but I haven't beaten Fallout 3, Red Dead Redemption, or Dragon Age: Awakening, or even started Wind Waker yet. I probably won't wait so long to get it because I'm excited about it.

Oh, sorry, i saw one of the previous posts talk about the original and assumed that's what you where refering to, see here:

So what's the problem, my old PC i used for Portal 1 had only 1 GB and a 6600GT which i got 3 years after the rest of the PC (because Lego Star Wars wanted Shader 2.0).

So what's the problem
Busy playing other games, and I never seem to have the money when there's a copy of The Orange Box to be had, plus scared off by the minimum system requirements of the bundle. It says 1.7GHz P4 min, I only have 1.4GHz P3's and am concerned not only for the 300MHz but also because the game may require SSE2 or above (which P3's can't do).
