I just read about this today. I saw some 2D concept art and thought that it would be another 2D film but noooooo, it's 3D. They say it's going to have the same warmth as the older, hand-drawn cartoons, but I doubt that. The concept art looks way better to me than how Rapunzel looks in 3D.

I'll still go see it, because you never know... but dang it.

because you never know
I'm not going to completely discredit it just because I prefer the other design. It might be good. They have some good voices lined up, at least. And I think this one has music again. There are lots of great 3D animated movies. I just miss the old style. It's why I was looking so forward to The Princess and the Frog. I was hoping it would signal a return.

Oh, I was under the assumption that it said "Disney" therefore you "had" to see it regardless.
Nah, the fact that it's Disney doesn't get my butt in a seat automatically. There are quite a few I haven't bothered with. I just don't want to write this off because of the animation. I'll have a better idea about it once previews start coming out.

I have very little hope for Rapunzel, its a story Disney's been chewing on for something like 30 years. My storyboarding teacher from last year was talking to me about it and she said that when she was there working on Hercules, what she saw being done to Rapunzel was terrible. Course, then that's why it wasn't released like ten years ago I guess.

It was also originally going to be 2D, from what I understand they made the switch though, for whatever reason.

They'll have to cut out exactly HOW Rapunzel gets caught seeing a man... getting knocked up. Unless Disney wants to explore some very uncharted territory in these animated films they do.

I've heard a little about their plot for the film, and apparently Rapunzel escapes from the tower, tired of the witch's tyrannical mothering, and takes up company with pirates.

No, I am not kidding. That's all I know and that's the big starting point for the plot.

Why bother calling it Rapunzel then? Just make it some new character.

Well, look at it this way: If they just called it something else, people would be bitching about how it's basically Rapunzel. I for one, could care less either way, since the story itself isn't exactly too...elaborate. Why not have fun with it?

Because you're not really doing Rapunzel at that point. It's like they heard the little bit in the 2003 Peter Pan where one of Wendy's stories is about Cinderella fighting pirates and said "Hey, we should do that!" It's neat, but it's not the story.

We would be as negative about the Princes and the Frog getting moved to Jazz Age New Orleans, but only for a little while... the rest will be 2 frogs out on the bayou... Hunting the Voodoo Witch Doctor.

Or Disney doing Hamlet, but instead of a Danish Prince, make him a lion cub. Then throw in a happy ending.

Yeah, the notion of bitching about Disney changing sacrosanct plots is pretty ludicrous at this point. Either you have accepted that this is what Disney does or you haven't and you don't watch Disney movies ever. In the case of Rapunzel, where the plot is about a page and a half long, I have to say that going off and being a pirate sounds pretty cool. Especially if she gets to keep the long hair while she's a pirate and does creative things with it.

And anyways... are we ignoring the prince rescuing her in the first place? Cause if we aren't, it's not like there isn't plenty of room to have the original Rapunzel story take place mostly verbatim in the first 15 minutes, and then have the movie be about what happens AFTERWARD.

Semi-unrelated news: A month ago I had been thinking it'd be neat to have a video game where you played as Rapunzel escaping from your tower using your increasingly long hair as a weapon/tool (there IS such a video game but it's a terrible flash one). I assume there will be a videogame tie-in to this movie ('cause there always is). It'll probably also be terrible, but still tickles me somewhat.

Edit: I wanted to amend that I AM disappointed that we aren't getting a movie done entirely in the style of the concept art. BTW, is there a link to any CGI stills?

Ahem:

I actually think that CGI looks pretty cool. I would still like to see a movie that's done entirely in a painted style, but I am not unhappy at all with it looking like that.

"Rapunzel's Revenge" A graphic novel I haven't read, but Linkara recommended it in his holiday shopping guide.

If not, just do it twice.

Dammit, my brain's still wired to that women's magazine thread. Her waistline makes me quizzical beyond all belief.

Looks purty, though.

Dude they can't have foreplay in a Disney movie. It's well Disney.
Well in regards to an animated Disney movie that is. So this'll be PG-13 then?

Did someone say earlier this one's plot goes along the lines of "Rapunzel escapes then becomes a pirate?" If that's the case then the guy is probably a pirate, ergo he initial comes to steal treasure or something or is otherwise a bad guy, ergo she initial ties him up.

The tied-up-scene didn't look like it came from a movie - it looked more like a plastic diorama or something.
