INCOMING SPOILERS!

Almost makes me wish I had a TV.... and cable/satellite.
Cable/satellite bills.
Cable/satellite hassle.
Cable/satellite commercials...
...Wish gone. Whew.

Having gotten my main present earlier this month, Doctor Who is the ONLY thing I'm looking forward to!

#4

Gill Kaiser

Wow, the plot of that episode was pretty dumb. John Simms and David Tennant were good as always, though.

Also, since Hot Fuzz I've realised just how well Timothy Dalton does sinister.

#5

Rubicon

I shall watch it "soon". Just waiting on a certain something something to finish.

Bonhomme Richard

If anyone can wait and wants to keep things legal, BBCA is playing both parts just a day later. Part one is tomorrow at 9:30 pm ET I think.

twitchmoss

twitchmoss

oh boy the simm fangirls are gonna go bonkers for this.

also: MEAT MEATY MEEAAAAAAAAAT

overall a weirdly...disjointed episode. i'll reserve judgement til the second part though.

#8

Rubicon

Aside from the gate thing with the Master..the rest was fucking awesome

THE TIMELORDS RETURN??!?!? holy shitballs.. Galifrey is back? And why would they want to end time? The human race becoming The Master was kinda silly.. but I mean so was the whole psychic network of satelites so I'll forgive it. Though the corner Master Race joke was O_O especially since he came back as a blonde haired white man again.

Next episode is going to suck...The Doctor dies :( /cry going to miss David

Was it just me, or did the head spinning effect in the scene with all the humans turning into the Master look really stupid? It really took me out of the moment.

Besides that, I enjoyed the first part. Can't wait until the first of January.

oh. EPIC. so, so SO epic. I'll post again when my brain restarts from the awesome overload.

but the saddest part?

...I Don't want to go.
:(

Shit.

I'll miss Tennant. Seriously. Like I'd miss a friend that's moving away or something. Sigh.

asdkjdf oakfdlkfk....wtf...

just..epic..

even the kinda lame Master storyline was rolled into a great ending..last 30 minutes or so were just pure tear moments...

The Time Lords during the Time War were dicks.. AND they are responsible for The Master being The Master..

I was glad to see The Doctor not use the gun to kill someone

The Master sacrificed himself to save The Doctor :( "Move out of the way..." I didnt see that coming, some might have, I didn't..

We all knew he was gonna die.. I thought when he fell through the sky light that was it, that was a big fall. No, he goes out in a Doctor fashion, saving someone else. When Willfred started knocking on the door started..I knew..

When he visited Martha and Mickey (great that they are married btw) I knew he was saying goodbye one last time.. to all his friends and family. lol I smiled so big when I saw the Cantina like bar with Capn Jack. And seeing Rose one final time was great.

That ending..was a heart wrencher..
"I don't want to go!"
..   Why..why did David have to leave :( He is the Doctor.. He will always be the Doctor.. David has been there for some of the toughest times of my life, I could always count on an episode with him to make a day a little better, if even but for a short while. He's my Doctor.. :waah: :waah: :waah: I don't want him to go..

I think they should've done the 1st part on Christmas Eve and the 2nd on Christmas Day. The 1st part for me was a little disappointing, still enjoyable, but it wasn't the awesomesauce the finale was and that really should've been on Christmas Day.

The 2nd made the 1st better by having the Master important to the overall plot and resulting in a not so obvious reset button, which was hopelessly foreshadowed by the 1st part. I was nicely surprised that
the Time Lords supplanted the Master as the villians of the episode. I thought they were just going to have them come back so Moffat had something else to work with, but no!

I do think the 4 specials over a year has hurt the writing though. It would've been better to have the 'Books of Saxon' and all that Voldemort resurrection nonsense to have been a Bad Wolf-like series arc, instead of the

"Ha ha! We bring back the Master!"

"Yay! I'm back!"

"Ha HA! I have anti-Master potion!"

"Noooo!"

Man, that was sad. Sadder than I was expecting.

Shit.

I'll miss Tennant. Seriously. Like I'd miss a friend that's moving away or something. Sigh.
I know, right? I'll miss the man too. He WAS the doctor. Forget about those other ten dudes.

Even though right now I think the new Doctor is a stupid emo band vocalist-looking, high pitched voice kid with a terrible Doctor outfit (a BOWTIE!?)... I'll just have to give him a chance because I also hated Tennant when he replaced Eccleston.. cause I fucking loved Eccleston. And then... Tennant surpassed him. By far. He became THE Doctor.

Let's hope the kid pulls it off, too.

#18

Rubicon

I dunno if I can follow the kid..

I mean yea I should keep an open mind and give'em a chance but....he's not David. No other Doctor will be David.. Its just not the same.

I pray Moffat or whoever picks up where RTD left off, has some tricks up his sleeve cause he has enormous fucking shoes to fill in terms of writing a character as good as David's Doctor.

"I dont want to go!" :waah:

As was pointed out earlier, I kind of went through the same thing with Tom Baker. Each doctor is unique and brings their own take on the character.

I think I pretty much agree with consensus. The actors all turned in fine performances and the story was a bit of a muddle. I thought Russell T Davies over-the-top style got in the way of the story more than in the other grand finales. It really felt like there was a better story hiding under all of the distractions.

I thought the "Superman 2" aspects of the Master this time around were particularly distracting. Lightning bolts? Flying? Why did we really need any of that?

Also, I thought there was one story element that I would have liked to see better used:
The Donna-Doctor
At least it still in place if they ever want to revisit the issue.

#21

Bowielee

Bowielee

But they can't really use the Doctor/Donna because if she ever becomes fully aware, she will die. Unless they want to kill off the character, they're stuck with her the way she is.

I think we can safely never say never. I imagine there are any number of ways they could write around it. I'm sure they could even come up with a way to have her remember for an episode and then forget again. Heck, it seems a natural fit for the second-unit episode.

Or, they could have her remember, find a way to slow down the process for an episode or two, save the day, and die.

#23

Bonhomme Richard

Bonhomme Richard

Apparently you can only quote spoiler tags once.

Don't forget, she's more creative than the Doctor, making her slightly more brilliant. In Journey's End there were a few things she did even the Doctor said he wouldn't have thought of. Perhaps the subconscious Doctor Donna (she's there because she picked out the book for Wilf) can find a way to remember and stay alive.

After watching it, I'm still looking forward to the next season, despite the sword-wielding space vampires.

AHHHH BLINK ANGELS

Don't forget there's also a human Tenth Doctor in a parallel universe so Tennant can still come back at any point.

#27

I was excited to see the Blink Angels again, though Daleks already? I like Daleks but damn, let them get a breather for a season or two so they don't feel over played, same with Cybermen.

The new Doctor... Someone on this forum said, and I agree, that something about his look makes me want to beat him up and steal his girlfriend.

#31

CynicismKills

CynicismKills

I'm betting on her being either his mother or some form of teacher/mentor. I agree on Donna's dad as the companion, he's a wonderful character and the three major emotional scenes between him and the Doctor were just great. The final trips to say goodbye were hard to watch without tearing up a little, and his final words just about got me. A great end to a phenomenal run as the Doctor, without a doubt.

Haven't you heard of the "Walking Ghost Phase"? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walking_ghost_phase

That, extended by Time Lord awesomeness.

Besides, even acute radiation poisoning wouldn't kill most human beings in less than a week or so. It's a slow, horrible death.

#34

What Calleja said. Radiation is, as far as I know, a slow and painful decay, not "oh shit ow blargh" like you've been shot with a bullet.

#35

Calleja

Yeah, besides, we saw a montage of the Doctor traveling... as far as we know, that could all have happened in one single day.. we never see the Doctor stay for more than a minute with each companion.

I don't agree with Eccleston being a better Doctor than Tennant, though ¬¬

I think if Eccleston had stuck around a couple seasons he would have really outshone Tennant. Sadly he took off after one brilliant season.

As far as I recall Eccleston quit because he didn't wanna be typecast.

Just read he might be playing John Lennon soon:

Yeah, that's how I heard it too, was trying to keep from being known as another "that guy who played Doctor Who." Instead he went on to make GI Joe. :/

#42

He was also the bad guy in one of those "normal kid discovers has powers and is humanity's last hope" movies... legend of the seeker or something.

I bet Tennant's gonna have a fine post-who career, too.

Yup, he agreed for 1 single season prior to even filming the first episode. He didnt want to be typecast.. Which is funny cause for Americans, he really hasn't been in many movies or tv shows. Prior to DW I had seen him in two things and they were minor roles; 1) the bad guy from the remake of Gone in 60 Seconds and 2) the kinda fucked up military leader guy from 28 Days Later.

Of course since DW, he's gone on to do other things. He was great in Heroes and other stuff.

Luckily, Tennant had no issues with being The Doctor :)

It was The Dark Is Rising, which was one of the best childrens novels when I was growing up in the 80's, they made it into a movie with him as the evil guy, and trust me he played it creepy enough.

I posit that the title of the show has little or nothing to do with the character itself.

#51

That may be the case, but they're still not talking about someone who is A doctor, which is the title that is abbreviated as "Dr.".

#52

Yes, it's an abbreviation. A time saving device that's purpose is negated by people who freak out when people get upset when you use it.

Yeah, I know it's just geeky nitpicking, but some things aren't supposed to be abbreviated, like person's names... like The Doctor's. The abbreviation of the TITLE doctor is used so you can easily add it to a person's name. Even the profession of doctor isn't abbreviated, it's not correct to write "I have to go to the Dr. because I'm sick".
