DOT Hack, advice?

I have no interest in playing the games. Would watching the 3-4 Anime series' be lost on me because I'd be missing information from the games or can the anime be fully stand-alone?

If so, what would be the correct order to watch these? So many conflicting answers across the net.

Yes and No. The first anime series in self contained, though it DOES lead directly into the game series (though only two of the characters involved in the anime series has anything to do with the game series). It's fantastic though and I do recommend it.

There IS cross-over between the first 4 games and it's sequels, as well as Legend of the Twilight (the second anime series). However, it's not REALLY that important to the plot. I'd still recommend playing the game though... they are a lot of fun and have DVDs that anime episodes that deal with things happening in the real world during the first 4 games. If you don't want to buy the games, just pirate the DVDs or whatever. They are .hack/Liminity I believe.

Characters you'd need to know from the games that show up in Legend of the Twilight...
- Kite: Dual Blade. His friend Orca was put into a coma by a Phase while he was playing. He received the Key to the Twilight from Aura and used it to fight off a viral infection that was compromising the game and the internet. He then left the game shortly afterward.

- BlackRose: Heavy Blade. Friend of Kite who helped him fight the Phases and drive off the viral infection. She left around the same time as Kite.

- Mistral: A Wavemaster that left the group as she neared giving birth to her child. Her child uses her account and is the Wavemaster Mireilli in Legend of the Twilight. This is more of a nod to the games than anything, but it does explain why Mireilli has so many rare items: Her account is ancient.

- Wiseman: A Wavemaster and information broker. He fills in Mistral's gap after she leaves. He helps the kids in the manga version of Legend of the Twilight (which is LOADS better than the anime).

- Sanjuro: A HeavyBlade that looks like a Samurai. He helped Kite in first 4 games (actually giving him a gamebreaking weapon). He helps the kids in the anime version of Legend of the Twilight.

- Balmung of the Azure Sky: A Swordmaster that completed a nigh impossible in-game event with Orca (Kite's friend), earning the title and a unique player model. He's a major player in the first game series and shows up in Legend of the Twilight as well.

- Shugo: Twin Blade. Main character of Legend of the Twilight. He received an email that gave him a free account for The World and special avatar that resembles Kite's. This makes him really stand out, as they retired Kite's model after the events of the games. Can Data Drain like Kite because he possesses the Key of the Twilight.

- Rena: Heavy Blade. Another main character. Shugo's sister, whom he gave another free account to. Her's had a special avatar that looks like BlackRose. She stands out for the same reason that Shugo does.

Unfortunately, I can't tell you anything post Legend of the Twilight. Haven't seen any of the anime past that, or played the G.U. series (though I know Sora from the first anime series shows up in it). I also haven't read any of the novels.

I've only seen about a dozen episodes total (and only own the first DVD). The music is amazing, and the story has that frustrating constant "we haven't told you everything yet, you'll have to figure it out" feeling that keeps your attention.
