My friend's birthday today (40!) and he used to play this game to death! I could never get past a level or two..

I only ever played it on 3DO. There is this room with rolling, huge pool balls that was usually the one that got me. I could never get the timing down properly.

Me either. my timing was always horrible.. one of the others was the swirling batons.. could NEVER time that thing, but I couldn't understand why he couldn't just crawl UNDER it either?

I, too, had a friend who played that game incessantly. He was very, very good but I always ran out of money and got bored waiting for him to finish.

OMG I used to hit the arcade and play this all the way through. The final battle against the Dragon was always fun to play out. Did the same with Space Ace although that one was more difficult, especially since there were two ways to do each level; one as Dexter and one as Ace.

wow.. I TOTALLY forgot that I had another friend who's dad actually bought him and his brother a Dragon's Lair machine..(several years later.. in 1988 I think? it was considered "old" then) he was mean enough to leave the free play OFF and allot them an amount of quarters they could only use so much of. Was trying to remember where I got so much practice from and I suddenly remembered.

I guess it goes without saying that the hardware to run Dragon's Lair was the same to run Space Ace, it just required a different laser disc set.

I know I've mentioned it before, but we all used to gather around my dad at the arcade because he'd play it and didn't care how many quarters he put in, so he always made it further than everyone else.

This is one of the only games I've payed for on the iPhone, and it was worth the two bucks just to finally see the damned ending.

As much as I like Don Bluth's animation I think the game is pretty terrible based on a gaming mentality. Profit wise it's a brilliant idea, but the controls and timing were always way too difficult for any game other than one made specifically to rob you of your money. After watching the full game it's even more ridiculous that they recycle sequences by flipping it just so they can get even more money out of you at the cost of nothing extra on their part.
I'd just much rather watch and enjoy the Bluth animation than ever play the thing.

You should post the 2nd game as well as Space Ace just for the heck of it.
