I take it you guys would recommend the books, then? :p

The Dresden books are some of the best modern fantasy out there. When you buy the first book you'll go buy the rest soon after.

I love them, get them each the day that they come out. If you cannot find the time to read them, I reccomend the audio books (I have said this before about them). james Marsters does the reading and the voices, and he is absolutely PERFECT for this. Actually makes them even better, if I do say so myself.

Wasn't there a TV show based off the books? What happened to that?

#7

Dave

The TV show was short lived on (I believe) Sy-Fy - or whatever it is now.

I hadn't been introduced to the books when the show came out so I've never seen it.

It was fucking horrid.

100 times yes on this. I've been listening to them from book 1 and I'm discovering a new love of audio books. I must look like a crazy person hitting the steering wheel and yelling at the peak of the battles.

Holy crap. He's really dead.

I wonder if there will be a loophole to bring him back
since the bad guys apparently took him before it was his time.

So James Marsters isn't doing Ghost Story because if scheduling conflicts. Don't know if I'll get the audio book now, because listening to a new reader is very jarring to me. My husband, who is totally addicted to the Dresden audio books nearly cried when he found out.

I don't know if I feel more sorry for Murphy or Molly.

I feel more sorry for Murphy. Molly has people looking out for her and she's young and has natural talent.

Murphy has had her entire life turned upside down and inside out. She's lost her job, she's lost the man she was starting to fall for (against her better judgement), her sometime lover is the one who killed the man she loves and now she's bending or breaking laws which is in her very nature to uphold. All this while fighting things that are way over her head and being totally alone (n a metaphoric if not real sense).

So I feel the most sorry for Murphy. Molly will bounce back, Murphy is so brittle she could break.

Murph can handle it, though ya, it sucks royally. And Molly, as long as the White Council doesn't decide to catch up to her, will be just fine.

I liked the development of some of the long-standing bit characters - Butters, Mort. It was kinda cool to hear a bit more about them.

And for F*** sake, what happened with Bob at the end?!? Is he OK? Why didn't Harry go back and check? I hate loose ends.

TBH, while it was a good story, I think this may actually be my least favorite in the series (though, I do love the series). Sure, it was well written and funny and surprisingly gorey in parts, and there were some good geek references, but I think the whole thing could have been accomplished much more... tightly? crisply? It almost felt rushed, and there were a couple of descriptive passages that were flat out repeated in later parts of the book for no apparent reason which I found quite jarring.

I wonder how he's going to get out of being the Knight, though. I truly dislike that he took that job as it will fuck with his motif.

I'm not sure he's going to get out of it, but my hunch is that he will do it his own way. How? I have no idea, but I think he will function as Mab's enforcer, in his own Dresden-esque way. That whole "my soul is my own" spiel at the end, methinks, was important. It was divinely inspired afterall!

It's not like he hasn't been working for Mab for a good chunk of the series anyways, in one form or another. Mab isn't inherently evil, any more than Titania is inherently good after all. And since Uriel is working with Mab, I'm pretty sure Harry will be all right.

ALTHOUGH, I think if Harry publicly comes back, Murphy is going to beat the crap out of him. And hopefully the White Council will rescind the death sentence on Molly once they find out Harry is not, in fact, dead.

And what significance does Demonreach play or will play in the future?

#25

TNM

Ghost Story is probably my least favorite book of the series, however, I did enjoy the flashback to Harry's days with Justin. I don't see Murphy healing from this adventure anytime soon. She is damaged goods and I hope Butcher doesn't twist her character to far. I miss the old Murph. :(

I'm not sure what Demonreach's role is, but I am intrigued. I'll have to go back and read the ending where the book explains how Harry's body was kept alive. And speaking of that what in the world of obi-wan was the parasite that helped his blood flow? A Fae?

I find it interesting people are saying it is their least favorite in the series, I found it the opposite. I quite enjoyed the change of pace, from the usual Dresden gets a challenge, during the course of said challenge Dresden gets the crap kicked out of him and comes back swinging and wins the consequences be damned. Instead he has to watch helplessly for the most part and find other ways to solve, also in this one a lot of the other background characters got some more development.

I guess I missed the witty banter he has with other characters in the books. I understand why, ya know being dead and all, but his wit and smart-ass comments make Harry, Harry. Ghost Story is still a good book but this one, to me, wasn't my top pick. I'll still buy the audio book even without Marsters performing the reading.

Oh and today I found out I missed Butcher's signing at my local B&N in ATL. Hopefully he will be at DragonCon. :(

I also missed the usual Harry-and-others banter, as most of it was cut out.

Speaking to the future though:
  • Harry has worked for Mab directly before. I don't think this will come out all that different in the short-term. Long-term? Who the hell knows, but short-term it will only be marginally different.
  • Why is Rashid so f'n scared of Demonreach and thinks that Harry is nuts for making an association? This came out of two books ago (I think) and how Rashid won't even step foot on that island. It'll be the 3-way association that will prove important IMO.
  • I agree with the others that Murphy will not just rush into Harry's arms, or whatever. She'll be distant, to the detriment of them both. Add in Molly's "crush" now that she's an adult, and stir. Not good ju-ju.
  • Molly + Wardens = wtf? I really don't know what'll happen here, and if there'll be any "loopholes" about non-humans when it comes to those converted by those Aquatic guys (forget name, sorry). It may turn out all of her "against the rules" is either that, or Lea acting as the Ragged Lady. If they can put reasonable doubt into any trial about "Lea did it" for the REALLY bad stuff, then they'll be OK... I think.
  • Harry won't still be a Warden I'll bet. Can't serve two masters or something. But here's another interesting wrinkle IMO: other Knights (Summer or Winter) weren't necessarily subject to the Laws because of their association with the Sihde. Who says Harry is now? Who says he's subject to their justice at all?
  • I predict we will see a cameo or little more of Harry's daughter in the next book. He'll try and protect her by keeping her out of his life. It won't work in the end, but for a while he'll try and keep her out. One book's worth at least. Beyond that, she'll be back in eventually. Unfortunately that means no Mouse until then either. :(
Ultimately, not as great a book as he's written before, but still worth reading and enjoyable. I really look forward to the future though.

just fisnished the audio. Glover was a great stand in as a reader.

As for the book, hot damn, but I really really liked this one. one of the better ones, in my opinion.
