so, we had elections this last week! fun. well, not for our labour government. very much not fun for them. ten cabinet ministers have resigned in the last two weeks, they lost control of pretty much all the council seats they were hanging on to to the conservative party in the local election.

and on top of that, the BNP got two seats in the EU election. :eek:rly: way to go yorkshire. you bunch of goddamn IDIOTS. electing a straight up neo nazi to represent the UK.

on the bright side, congratulations to sweden and the pirate party for getting a seat! :aaahhh:

to everyone else from the relevant countries, how did the vote go in your country?

Spaniards don't bother with voting!

Or, well, just a few do, and most of thm like better the right wing party, even if the ad campaing for the left wing ones was really good!

(For example: (I'm sorry, the subtitles are in spanish...)

)

Actually if I'm not mistaken the participation here was a tad higher than the average of Europe...

Also, yes. The majority voted right winged :S

#5

Silver Jelly

Silver Jelly

Well, you know I'm not left winged, but I can't support a party that thinks that the ad I just showed is insulting their voters...

#6

tegid

tegid

Well, it IS a bit insulting, because it implies that everyone who vote the people's party think like that. Of course their answer was even worse (It showed rabid dogs and implied that the left wing act/are like them).

Meh. What about other countries? It seems most of europe is righty...

So what makes this guy they elected a "Neo-Nazi"? I'm seeing a LOT of hate for him on the net today... is he really that bad or merely the opposition, and therefore, the devil?

Mr_Chaz

Well...A biased site, but the quotes are true none the less. And no, these aren't out of context to make them look bad.

From their party constitution:
The British National Party stands for the preservation of the national and ethnic character of the British people and is wholly opposed to any form of racial integration between British and non-European peoples. It is therefore committed to stemming and reversing the tide of non-white immigration …

Huh. Yeah. That's not... good...

Nick Griffin said:
I am well aware that the orthodox opinion is that 6 million Jews were gassed and cremated or turned into lamp shades. Orthodox opinion also once held that the earth is flat… I have reached the conclusion that the ‘extermination’ tale is a mixture of Allied wartime propaganda, extremely profitable lie and latter witch-hysteria.
In 98 Nick Griffin was convicted of inciting racial hatred. One of the witnesses at his trial? Holocaust denier Robert Faurisson.

This is a good'un too:
Nick Griffin said:
The TV footage of dozens of ‘gay’ demonstrators flaunting their perversions in front of the world’s journalists showed just why so many ordinary people find these creatures so repulsive

Oh gods... Those uns don't get any seats here. I mean, people who think like that probably do, but people who openly say so? God, no.

It could have been worse here in the Netherlands. Sure, people say Wilders won, but his party isn't the biggest one and they don't have any partnerships with other European parties, so they'll probably be very uninfluential. Most of the dutch seats went to pro-Europe parties and our green party actually went from 2 to 3 seats

#14

Mr_Chaz

To be fair the BNP only got 2 seats, and will be generally ignored in Parliament and have very little to no influence. But it's still 2 more seats than they had before, and shows that over 900 000 people actually voted for them. Kinda horrifying. And unfortunately, one of their MEPs is from my region. I didn't vote for him obviously.

WolfOfOdin

Wanna know something even scarier?

National Front in France is gaining a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot of support as of late, due to the economic crisis and France's attitudes towards Muslim immigrants. They argue strongly for Jus Sangui citizenship, instead of Jus Soli, IE you're only a citizen if your parents, their parents and their parents were of more or less pure French descent....and actively supports the idea of removing any non-french or non european individual from France and barring their entry forever.

espy, this is the wiki article on the BNP MEP.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Brons

Brons began his political career at seventeen, when he joined the National Socialist Movement
Brons later joined John Bean's British National Party (unrelated to the party of the same name formed in 1982) which merged with the League of Empire Loyalists to form the National Front (NF) in 1967
i think thats about as neo nazi as you can get.

and to anyone saying 'its only two seats, its not that bad. the bbc now has to give airtime to the bnp as part of their impartiality agreement. :eek:rly:

Oh please don't take what I said to be anything like that (if this was meant at me), I think it's horrific that anyone could vote for these people, and I think any attention they get is a bad, bad thing. My point was more that their political influence isn't yet enough to have a direct impact. Unfortunately between their local council seats, and now their MEPs, I can only see them gaining more ground at the next general election.

In Finland, we had Timo Soini of the Perussuomalaiset ('Basic Finns') Party get elected. Like I said in the rant thread, electing a candidate whose slogan was "Where there's EU, there's a problem" to the Parliament is like picking a soccer player who likes to kick his teammates in the balls.

Luckily, he's the only one of his party who got elected - out of 18 MEPs Finland gets to send :) And to counter him, there's the unaligned Mitro Repo, who is generally thought to be a decent, progressive fellow, even though he was denied the right to continue his clerical duties for the duration of his Parliament membership by the Orthodox Church.

I know I didn't vote for them. Must be all the immigrants.

Iaculus

The very simplified version of what happened is that Labour's traditionally been the go-to party for white working-class types (hint - it's in the name), and now that they're effectively imploding and none of the other parties are looking too welcoming, the BNP has swooped down on a whole demographic of disenfranchised voters. That's why they and the more moderate (but still occasionally slightly scary) UK Independence Party hve been making gains of late.

^ This. I was somewhat dissapointed to see Wilders winning a couple of seats, but since he refuses to become part of a power block he can only scream from the sidelines and not really matter (which I suspect, is all he actually wants to do).

I voted D'66, which is part of the 'Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe' power block. I would've voted VVD, which is more liberal, but after I found out they were in the same block as D'66 I figured I'd just vote for them.

I'm actually a bit surprised WIlders isn't in the block where our VB and such are. Oh well. Luckily the stupid right (note: I'm not at all saying all right is stupid. Just that this kind of right is. It's like saying "all stupid Spaniards" doesn't include Silver either :-P) is so splintered. Our VB actually took some serious losses (losing 9% and more) so I'm happy. The moderate nationalist party won, which is good. Too bad the progressive-left-liberal-nationalist party didn't get over 5% so didn't get a seat :-(

Populist parties tend to do that; it's always easy to play the blame game when you're the outsider and the underdog. But when you actually have to do something...

Oh, now they're a foot in the door they'll try to milk it for all they can, but when their following find they've got nothing and no pull they'll lose interest. Jump on the Tory bandwagon I reckon.

No they'll move to UKIP when they want to have an impact. Unfortunately UKIP are gaining to the point where they actually do have some power. Sure they're not extremist crazies like the BNP, but they're still idiots.

Mr_Chaz

Necroing the thread a little...

It turns out the BNPs members haven't got the memo that they're not supposed to be a racist party...

Someone who wants to send all immigrants home says:
I hate Britain, and I want to move to Spain in the next couple of years, ‘cos our country’s not England anymore.
A 23 yr old member says:
The memory I have is the war, and how we fighted [sic] all the people in WWI and WWII
Quite a good memory you've got there hun!

Nelson Mandela – hero or villain?
Villain.
So what nationality would you most like to be waited-on by as a servant class?
Oh God, there’s a few. There’s a couple I would, but I can’t really pinpoint one.

Go on.
I don’t know. Chinese maybe?

Wow.
